Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
Methimazole 10 mg is used to treat hyperthyroidism. It has to be taken for over 18 to 24 months. Should not be abruptly stopped. Where as the tablet mentioned is a nonspecific herbal combination without any clinical evidence of benefits. Plus it seems to be given in hypothyroidism. If you want proper results do not discontinue Methimazole. Thanks.

Hello, thanks for the question.
From what you have written I understand that you are on treatment for hyperthyroidism with methimazole. Usually this drug needs to be given for over 18 months or some times up to 24 months. (which you have mentioned). The decision to stop medication is taken on the basis of tsh levels (returning to normal). That may happen after a few weeks or months of treat, ment. Just because one feels normal, treatment can not be stopped. Please the tsh regularly once ever...more

Hello, thanks for the query.
I have seen the details mentioned. However, there is no information on actual t4 & tsh levels. Because if hyperthyroidism is not well controlled, conception may not occur. Please let me know following details: 1) what is the dosage of methimazole earlier and now? 2) are you continuing the dosage now? 3) what was thyroid function test result when hyperthyroidism was diagnosed and what is the current t4 & tsh level? Unless these details are known no comments can be...more

lybrate-user ji, Thanks for the query.
With TSH 5.4 mU/L, there is really no reason to start treatment with Methimazole. This drug is given in Thyrotoxicosis and hyperthyroidism where TSH is <0.01 mU/L and T4 is in excess. You have to stop methimazole immediately and there is a need for taking thyroxine. I think I have already answered this question in detail in the morning. Please understand you are taking a wrong treatment. Thanks.

Hello, Thanks for the query.
WIth adequate dosage of antithyroid drug like Methimazole, TSH should come up towards the normal range (0.5 to 5.0 mU/L), However, it takes quite some time to achieve the same. Usually the treatment has to be continues for over 12 to 18 months or longer. Please let me know what symptoms do you have now? Thanks.

Pooja ji, Thanks for the query.
I have seen the details mentioned. Looking at the T4 & TSH levels, it is clear that you have become Hypothyroidism patient. This is because of taking Methimazole for a longer time than needed. So now please stop that drug. Then check TSh again after 4 to 6 weeks later. If the level does remain high (>6 mU/L) then you may need to start the treatment for hypothyroidism. If you have any further queries then please come in a private conversation where I will be ...more

Lybrate-user ji, Thanks for the query.
Madam please tell me when TSH was 5.4 mU/L, who suggested the treatment with Methimazole? Because that drug is given only when TSH is very low say- 0.01 mU/L. The drug you are taking is known as antithyroid drug, which will reduce formation (synthesis) of hormone thyroxine (T4) by the gland. It is given only in conditions like Thyrotoxicosis and hyperthyroidism. Please let me know following details: T3, T4 & TSH levels when treatment was advised. Presen...more

Hello, Thanks for the query.
I have gone through the details mentioned. It is difficult to understand why the treatment given took so many changes. Because no where you have mentioned actual tsh, t3 & t4 values. Because levothyroxine is given to treat hypothyroidism, usually when tsh is > 10 mu/l.
Hyperthyroidism is exactly an opposite condition where tsh < 0.01 mu/l. Where there is very high t4 & t3 level. In that methimazole is given usually for 18 months to 2 years. Similarly if that ...more

Mr R Gowthaman, Methimazole is the drug for hyperthyroidism. Usually taken for about 18 months and then discontinued. In some cases thyroid function returns to normal or if again excess activity comes back then preferred treatment is either use of radio active iodine or thyroidectomy.

Hello, Thanks for the query.
I am unable to understand how Methimazole can be replaced by Methotraxate. Methotraxate is used as immunomodulator and in totally different indications. Nothing may happen for having taken for a short time. But for hyperthyroidism prescribed drug needs to be taken in the correct dosage. Thanks.
