It depends up on several factors. If you were diagnosed type one diabetes since begining then insulin is must.
If you were diagnosed type two and eatlier on oral medicines and insulin was started for certain situations like any surgery etc. You may switch over to oral medicines.

The very fact that you had developed an episode of ketosis, due to very high glucose level, doctor has prescribed insulin injection for providing better glucose control. In that situation, it is very unlikely that your glucose level can be controlled without using insulin. Considering her approximate age and duration of diabetes, it seems more like type 2 rather than t1. If such is the case, she also needs to be on insulin sensitizers which are oral medicines. Also,actrapid alone will never cover her basal glucose production, so she also needs to be on intermediate acting insulin.

It is highly advisable to consult and speak to your doctor and discuss about your concerns and ideas. Even though different types of insulin may be given based on their action period (different combinations may also be used ), it needs regular monitoring and the dosage needs adjustment over a long period of time, and therefore it is wise to leave the decision to the doctor.
