Thanks for the query.
You are right about low insulin production in diabetes. There are usually two main types of diabetes - T1 DM where there is totally No Insulin production. This happens due to destruction of beta cells present in pancreas, due to an autoimmune process. Type 2, which more common variery is due either to lack of insulin or increased resistance to its action, mainly due to increased fat and inactivity.

To avoid weight gain you have to control your diet which should be low in calory, high in fibres and sugar free.
Second most important thing is regular execise which is must for weight control.
Insulin is last option in type two diabetes control. There are several medicines with different mechanisms to control diabetes. You can discuss with your Physician.
It is not necessary to continue with insulin lifelong. It can be stopped also if your doctor thinks so.

Weight reduction, controlled diet, regular exercise, avoiding high fatty foods, junk foods, pastries and other bakery items. Mr. Lybrate-user, you are having t1 diabetes, in which there is no insulin in your body, as beta cells of pancreas do not produce it at all. So you will have to continue to take insulin injections for life time. Also please get your eyes checked for any retinal changes from a good eye specialist. It is very essential. Also always be in control of your diet and do some regular exercise.

Insulin is better, but if he is very well controlled with low dose of tablets, then we can think about tablets. His current medicines, sugar levels are needed to tell which one will be the best option.

Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by beta cells of the pancreatic islets; it is considered to be the main anabolic hormone of the body. It regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and protein by promoting the absorption of carbohydrates, especially glucose from the blood into liver, fat and skeletal muscle cells.
Low insulin levels in the blood have the opposite effect by promoting widespread catabolism, especially of reserve body fat.
