Epilepsy is due to a variety of causes. It can be cured in some with acquired causes but not in those with genetic or irreversible acquired causes. The minimum duration for your drugs is 2 years in most cases but in case you have been labelled jme, you are required to take ot lifelong.

you need to furnish a few more details, there is nothing like an unknown epilepsy, there is a standard classification of epilepsies and I would like to know the details of your onset, frequency, type of seizure, family history, response to medication, precipitating factors and other details of your epilepsy to classify it. ideally it is to be started 500 mg twice a day and if required it can be increased to 1gm twice a day... max dose is 3 gm per day but usually not required

Epilepsy can be fatal if untreated and he should take the medicines regular and ensure that he does not get fits. He should not go alone to places where danger is rampant like near a water pool or climb heights. His eeg need to be checked every 6 months or every year.

it is difficult to comment whether it was a myoclonic jerk or not but I feel that it was not a myoclonic jerk, it was a reflex movement on suddenly viewing your shadow. You continue on same medication and follow up.
