If there is optical nerve problem then there should be some problem with his vision.
And in that case if there are scattered demyelinating lesions in mri brain along with weakness of arm or leg, diagnosis of multiple sclerosis should be considered and intravenous steroids for 5 days is the treatment for its acute attack.
