Hello lybrate-user, in type 1 diabetes, insulin is the only line of management. Some newer drug are approved by FDA but they are add-on to your insulin and efficacy wise these drugs are not effective as single therapy but insulin can't be substituted.

Hello, Thanks for the query.
There a number of rapid acting insulins like regular or analogs, all are safe and effective to use along with Glargine. There is also a combination available with regular insulin, which can be used. Thanks.

Hi.
You have described your case very well, thank you for that.
As you have mentioned, your hba1c was very well controlled at 6.7 last year. You need to check in again now. If it again shows that your diabetes is very well controlled, then there is no such need of changing a very well suited insulin regiment and experiment with a newer one.
Thank you. Take care.

Mr. lybrate-user, thanks for the query.
The very fact that you had developed an episode of ketosis, due to very high glucose level, doctor has prescribed insulin injection for providing better glucose control. In that situation, it is very unlikely that your glucose level can be controlled without using insulin. Another aspect if the glucose levels are in excellent control, it is possible to shift to oral drugs, that you can ask the doctor treating you. I will not be in a position to decide ...more

It depends up on several factors. If you were diagnosed type one diabetes since begining then insulin is must.
If you were diagnosed type two and eatlier on oral medicines and insulin was started for certain situations like any surgery etc. You may switch over to oral medicines.

You can take a basugine (glargine) substitute for lantus it comes in vial form and much cheaper.
Ask your diabetologist to shift you from rapid acting lispro (humalog) to regular insulin (actrapid) which is cheaper but you need to take it 30 mins before each meal as action is little slower.
