The reason the improvement did not stay is because sertraline should not have been stopped in one month. It should have been continued for five months. This situation is similar to fracture followed by plaster of leg. In two weeks pain reduces, but if you remove plaster and start walking, it will re-fracture. So one must keep plaster for 6 weeks. Once plaster is removed graded physical exercise will strengthen bones and muscles. Similarly, once sertraline is taken for the said duration psychothe...more

I need help. I have been suffering from mental illness on and off for the last 10 years. I am male, 26 years old, preparing for civil services exam. The first time depression started when I was in kota in 2009, then I even did not know what I was going through. Someone took me to a doctor after many months. I started taking medicines and depression got better but anxiety was at the peak. I gave my exam of 12th in that anxiety and did poorly as compared to my 10th. I started, yoga, meditation, got admission in engineering college and somehow depression reduced to some extent but anxiety was consistently there. At that time I did not know what is this happening to me. I thought depression and anxiety was the same thing. I did not take any medicine from 2011 to 2016 and I was doing okay. I 2016 I was feeling very much anxious and had to visit aiims, said the whole story to the psychiatrist. He gave escitalopram 10 mg and clonazepam 10 mg. I ate medicines for not many days and I got better also. So I never visited again and neither did I complete the course. I visited again in 2020 and doctor asked me where were you? I said I never realized I had depression or anxiety in these years, I was doing absolutely fine. He again gave me escitalopram and clonazepam (sos) for 3 months but when 3 months was about to complete lockdown happened, I could not go again. I ate medicines for 3 months and then left but withdrawal symptoms come and then I have to start again. I want to quit medicines for forever, kindly help me to manage anxiety without this medicine and also diagnose me properly.

Gradually reduce the dose of escitalopram, do not leave medicines without consultations, it is good to know you want to quit medicines forever, change daily habit, do aerobic exercise (jogging, swimming, bicycling or skipping ropes) 30 mins to 1 hour daily, include green leafy vegetables and eggs in daily diet and include use of almonds, soybeans and oats. Exercise and these food increase tryptophan in body which helps to increase serotonin.

If you are having anxiety daily. Consult years psychiatrist and take medicines accordingly. Melzap is a good medicine but taking it for longer time or prolonged period is not recommended. Thanks.

Hello. I have been prescribed clonazepam, strain 50 mg and mirtazapine 7.5 mg and quetiapine 25 mg for anxiety disorder, borderline ocd and moderate depression, abnormal dreams and chronic insomnia. I am taking it since 1 n half month. The first phase was alright. In my second visit the doses were increased and quetiapine came to the prescription. I had very severe symptoms like breathlessness, anesthesia like feeling, alteration in olfaction and taste. The ears and nose felt blocked. Severe heaviness dizziness and an internal burning sensation. However, doctor had reduced the dosage and I was getting accustomed and soon in 3 to 4 days I got red patches all over my hands and legs. Dreadfully red. Extremely itchy. To an extent that my normal life is hampered and I am in pain. I consulted a dermatologist who has given me antihistamines. I started it a day back but till now no positive outcome. The psychiatrist asked me to stop all the medications for now except clonazepam. I am really worried that what is going wrong in the process and how can I get rid of these itchy patches. I am not able to bear this extreme discomfort. Please help. P.s:i also have migraine since 2014.

Dear Yasha,
Both clonazepam and etizolam are NOT medicines for OCD. They belong to benzodiazepine group of anxiolytics. You don't gain weight by these medicines, if you maintain the usual diet and exercise schedule.

No sir, it is not at all adviseable to try this medication nor to self-medicate/regulate without doctor's approval. If you are so keen on coming off of this medication and want to improve your health, I suggest that you go for counseling in tandem with he medicines. If you combined counseling with the medication you can expect the best outcomes for your anxiety disorder. However, you must be episode-free for at least three years before the doctor will decide on weaning you off of the medication ...more
