Dear Lybrate user, glimepiride stimulates betacells to secrete insulin. Metformin is supposed to reduce insulin resistance and slow down glucose absorption from the intestine. Usually both these are used together to control increased blood glucose. In newly diagnosed patients metformin alone is used. In some both drugs are used together. Which drug to take for a particular level can be decided by the treating doctor.

It appears you are on a fairly high dose of Glimepiride. Metformin (2000 mg) is also fairly high. Usually Glimepiride should not be used more than 4 mg in a day. Even though recommended upper limit is 8 mg, conventionally using more than 4 mg is not advised.
