5 years means persistent depression (long term depression), so most likely life long treatment. Prepare your mind for this. It is like treating diabetes or hypertension, so don't worry. But meet your psychiatrist regularly and don't take these over the counter/ self medication, as they need monitoring and regular blood testing to find if there are any untoward effects. All the best.

You can be helped by cognitive behavioural therapy if drugs are not working.
Take regular sessions with some psychologist if you can otherwise you can also go for self cbt .it takes 6 to 8 months to be normal if you put sincere and persistent effort.
