5.8 is too low a Hb concentration for a 11 year old. Further test would depend upon the actual counts, family history and other details. Iron tonic will benefit only if there is an established iron deficiency.

Hb 5.6 is too low, and you definitely need some treatment other than tonic. Though iron deficiency is the most common cause for anemia, but there are other important and serious causes of anemia including thalssemia and hemolytic anemia, which must be ruled out by clinical examination and proper blood tests. So before taking iron tablets, you must consult with hematologist at once for proper diagnosis and rapid treatment according to the test results. Hope it will clarify your doubts. Thanks.

in your case you are having very low hemoglobin with might require blood transfusion.
