Avoid eating excessive amounts of cough drops containing menthol. Large amounts of menthol can reduce milk supply.
Expectorant cough mixtures
medicines containing guaifenesin can be taken by breastfeeding mothers to relieve a chesty cough.
Nasal decongestant sprays or drops will act directly on the nasal passages to relieve congestion and reduce absorption into the mother’s body. These may prove to be a safer alternative to decongestant tablets.

Expectorants help thin mucus, making it easier to cough up. The ingredient guaifenesin is the only expectorant in the U.S., so look for it on the label if you need an expectorant. Suppressants help cut the number of times you cough. The active ingredient listed is usually dextromethorphan (DM).
