I have a problem of heavy dandruff. Can you please tell me the right solution to avoid that.
Hi, Dandruff is one of the most common scalp disorders wherein accumulation of dead skin cells appears on the scalp in the form of white flakes. This flaky layer of dead cells gets in the way of free breathing of your hair and hence weakens it, leaving it more susceptible to fall out. Furthermore, these scales fall onto the shoulders, eyebrows and even clothes when you comb or scratch your scalp. Therefore, those who are affected always feel conscious in the crowd. 1. Use Camphor with coconut oil - This is one of the grand maa?s recipes where you just need to mix small amount of camphor in coconut oil. Store it in a bottle, and apply each night before going to bed. Camphor cools your scalp and helps to reduce dandruff. 2. Use Gram flour with curd - Mix two spoons of gram flour in a small bowl of curd. Add half a spoon of lemon juice. Apply this mixture on your scalp and leave it for thirty minutes. Curd and gram flour works best as hair cleansers which aid in cleaning the scalp. This definitely is the best ayurvedic medicine for dandruff to try. 3. The best ayurvedic remedy is using Vinegar - Mix two tablespoons of vinegar in cup of hot water. Use cotton to dab on the scalp. Vinegar not only conditions your hair but also assists in clearing dandruff. It?s a tried & tested formula of all times. 4. Prepare Shikakai concoction - Mix Shikakai with mint leaves and fenugreek seeds. Soak them in water and apply the mixture on the scalp before you sleep. Leave it overnight. In the morning, rinse it off with warm water. If you cannot prepare it at home, there are many ayurvedic shops that sell already packed Shikakai with many more herbs great for the hair. 5. Use Neem leaves or Neem oil with lemon - Make a paste of Neem leaves. You can also use Neem oil if you don?t have access to Neem leaves in your locality. Add half a lemon to it and apply the paste on your scalp. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash it off with shampoo. For best results, use this tip twice a week. 6. Use Hot oil massage - Before you apply any oil on your hair, just warm it up a little for the oil to get soaked deeper in the roots. Massage your hair with hot oil before going to bed. Wash off your hair later in the morning. Just use a napkin over your pillow to avoid stains on the pillows. 7. Use Black Pepper Powder - Black pepper powder, blended with milk and fresh lime juice is known to provide a great solution for dandruff problems. The concoction is supposed to be rubbed onto the scalp thoroughly and then should be left on for an hour. Rinse out finally thoroughly with plain water. 8. Apply Mint leaves with apple cider vinegar - Boil a cup of water mixed with a cup of apple cider vinegar. Add few mint leaves. Let the mixture boil for some time and allow it to cool. Gently take the mixture on your finger tips and massage it into your scalp. Rinse after it dries. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Migraine - 8 Ayurvedic Remedies For Treating It!

Migraine is a very common form of a headache which strikes nearly 15 % of the population. Females are more prone to migraines. Science has not been able to find the real cause behind migraine attacks and the way it treats these massive headaches is also patchy at best. A migraine occurs for a definite period of time, usually, comes with a warning and paralysing pain.

Ayurvedic view
According to Ayurveda, migraine is a tri-dosha disorder. It occurs when vata or the wind element goes out of sync. Vata controls the nervous system and brain activity. Vata imbalances are linked to many diseases like joint problems, dizziness and it happens because of faulty metabolism, poor elimination, sleeplessness, etc. Pitta the fire element also has a role to play in migraines. It causes dilation of the blood vessels, which brings on a migraine attack.

Ayurvedic physicians can identify which dosha is causing a migraine. If the patient is constipated, has acute pain and has dry skin, his Vata is out of whack. If a patient has nosebleeds, is hypersensitive to light, has burning eyes and is irritable, pitta is out of balance. And if a patient has fatigue, is depressed and has a dull throbbing in the head, he is suffering a Kapha imbalance.

Ayurvedic therapies

  1. Shirolepa: Application of herbal pastes to pacify pitta like sandalwood, camphor, Jatamansi.
  2. Shiro Dhara: Medicated oils are poured on the scalp.
  3. Taila dhara: Oils like ksheerabala taila, chandanadi taila are poured on scalp for calming higher vata imbalances.
  4. Ksheera dhara: Here cow milk is poured on the scalp to pacify pitta.
  5. Takra dhara:  Also known as buttermilk is poured when there is obstruction to passage of vata.
  6. Kavala graha: Oil pulling done with oils like chandanadi taila and mahanarayana taila.
  7. Shirovasti: Medicated oils are retained on the scalp by wearing a leather cap.
  8. Sneha nasya: Oils like Anu tailam are poured into nostrils.

Apart from there therapies herbs like Kumari or Aloe vera, Amalaki or amala and Bala or Sida cardifolia are very useful as migraine cures. Several Ayurvedic medicines are also very useful in migraine-like-

  1. Pathyadi khada: It is used in the treatment of headaches, earaches, and migraine etc.
  2. Shirashooladi vajra rasa: It is used in the treatment of headache, migraine, tension headache, vascular headache etc.
  3. Bhoonimbadi khada: Used as a cure for fever, cold, sinusitis, headache.
  4. Kamadugha rasa:  Used to cure all high pitta conditions.
  5. Godanti Bhasma:  250 mg of this medicine is also given twice a day for immediate relief from migraines.

Patients should also eat warm, nutritive foods like sesame, sweet fruits, cumin, garlic, jaggery and rice for balancing Vata. For balancing pitta, they should stay away from smoking and drinking at the very least.

Is Chikungunya Causing You Joint Pain? Manage It With Ayurveda!

Is Chikungunya Causing You Joint Pain? Manage It With Ayurveda!

Mosquitoes, though tiny, can wreak havoc on the human health. Malaria and dengue were common enough, but now another disease doing the rounds is chikungunya. This is a viral disease that spreads by the bites of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The disease lasts for 5 to 7 days. Also, even though the weather is changing, it is still prevalent and as on November 18, 878 cases have been reported in Delhi itself.

Symptoms of chikungunya are very non-indicative and include high temperature, rashes and multiple spots on the body, multiple joint pains, headaches, conjunctivitis and insomnia. The presence of joint pains associated with a high incidence of mosquito breeding is indicative of chikungunya. The fever usually subsides in a couple of days, but the other symptoms would persist for about a week.

Management of chikungunya includes a combination of prevention and treatment. Prevention is more important than treatment as it is easier done.

  1. To the maximum extent possible, avoid mosquito bites.
  2. Avoid using rainwater-filled containers, potted plants that stagnate water and drinking bowls for domestic animals.
  3. Wear full-sleeved clothing when mosquito bites are likely to be higher.
  4. Use mosquito repellents in the forms of coils, creams, and mats
  5. Use mosquito nets where possible
  6. Prevent mosquito breeding by draining possible areas of water stagnation

Treatment: There is no specific allopathic remedy for the treatment of chikungunya. The prescribed medicines are only for symptomatic relief, and given the intense and prolonged joint pains, the patient ends up using a lot of painkillers. There are cases where the pains may persist for up to 6 months. This is where Ayurveda comes into the picture, as there are multiple effective remedies that have been proven effective over the ages.

  1. Massage your joints with a mixture of castor oil, drumstick, camphor, garlic, and coconut oil. This oil can be heated and stored in a glass jar for about 3 days. Warm this oil and use it for effective relief of the joint pains.
  2. A mixture of castor oil and cinnamon can also be used to massage the painful joints.
  3. A concoction of ajwain seeds, raisins or dry grapes, tulsi leaves, and neem leaves boiled in water is an effective remedy for the joint pains. This is to be used when it is warm after food and the residual ingredients chewed upon.
  4. A diet rich in fresh fruits, greens and vegetables is recommended.
  5. Drinking sufficient amounts of liquids (water, coconut water, lime juice, and buttermilk) to keep good hydration levels and recuperate from the illness.
  6. Ensure sufficient rest for the joints even after the initial fever has subsided.

Ayurveda has references to something called “sandhijwara” which is “fever of the joints”. Sandhijwara is very similar to chikungunya and these remedies used for this can be very useful in treating chikungunya.
