Insulin is not a bad medicine. But depending upon your blood sugar and the oral medicines you take it may be possible to keep you off insulin. You have to be strict with your diet and exercise.

To avoid weight gain you have to control your diet which should be low in calory, high in fibres and sugar free.
Second most important thing is regular execise which is must for weight control.
Insulin is last option in type two diabetes control. There are several medicines with different mechanisms to control diabetes. You can discuss with your Physician.
It is not necessary to continue with insulin lifelong. It can be stopped also if your doctor thinks so.
