Dear Lybrate user, glimepiride stimulates betacells to secrete insulin. Metformin is supposed to reduce insulin resistance and slow down glucose absorption from the intestine. Usually both these are used together to control increased blood glucose. In newly diagnosed patients metformin alone is used. In some both drugs are used together. Which drug to take for a particular level can be decided by the treating doctor.

Your sugar levels are uncontrolled but they are not touching any panic value. So you needn’t worry as much as you are worrying right now and the only remedy in your condition would be to alter your medicines for the best benefit. You need to understand that we are always in a dynamic state of sugar control meaning by which no single medicine can be prescribed for life as the sugar levels keep on fluctuating in the body. I would recommend you to seek a private consult with me.

Hello, thanks for the query.
I have seen the details mentioned. Madam for a person with 85 years of age, glimiperide is not suitable. Other drugs can be given provided his kidney functions are good. That can be seen by serum creatinine and urea levels. So please check those. Because if egfr (glomerular filtration rate) is < 45 ml/minute then then meformin should not be started particularly at that age. So first please check all those levels and inform the same or consult a physician there. I...more

Therefore please give following details: fasting, pp glucose, hba1c%, bp readings, lipid profile, serum creatinine, urea, dietary pattern, extent of daily exercises, weight and height.
