There are chances of pregnancy if protection failed. And yes the above mentioned medicine can also alter it. Better take tests to confirm instead of assuming.

Hello Doctor, This question is for my 53-year-old mother-in-law who has been having rheumatoid arthritis for about 30 years. She has had bilateral hip and knee replacements, and her last operation was done about 5 years ago. Things were going fine until about 2 months ago when she started having severe neck and shoulder pain, sometimes radiating to her arms. We did consult her regular rheumatologist, who has asked her to begin Adalimumab injections, twice a month. We came to know that there are severe sideeffects to the drug and would like to know more about it and the success percentage of Adalimumab injection. It would be great if you could help us find other treatment alternatives that we can look up to.

Dear Radha, Namaskar, Adalimubab is a biologic drug, very effective in RA.......Ofcourse all the modern medicines do have some untoward and side effects.......but the treating Doctor has to titrate the dosage and choose the lesser evil out of Pendora of various drugs.... I am sure he will closely monitor the situation...There is no alternative treatment of this disease as for as scientific evidence is concerned.... Have faith and patience.... Take care.

Hello. The 2018 chemistry nobel was given for use injection Adalimumab for autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. Adalimumab is used by a lot of rheumatologists in our country, as a first line biologic therapy for RA. It needs to be taken 40unit Subcutaneous injection every 2 weeks. Before initiating Adalimumab therapy you need to be tested for latent TB, HIV and hepatitis. I think you must understand you initiating this treatment, that it control and treat your joint inflammation and existing disease, but it is no certain cure to the disease. Also existing deformities can not be corrected with this treatment. But regular treatment can prevent future deformities.

Hi Lybrate-user, The drug transfers into breast milk in small amounts but is not likely absorbed by the infant. Most experts state that adalimumab is likely compatible with breastfeeding. No adverse effects or developmental abnormalities have been reported in infants exposed to adalimumab monotherapy during breastfeeding. Although no infant side effects have been reported during mono therapy with immunosuppressive biologic, the mother can monitor the child for signs and symptoms of infection or gastrointestinal irritation. There are currently no recommendations or requirements for laboratory monitoring of the infant during exposure to these medications.

Hello. There are other options like leflunomide, in case you are intolerant to methotrexate. Considering you are already on steroids and 2 dmards (sulfasalazine & hcqs), I would suggest you take any biologics therapy for better control of your disease like adalimumab or etanercept or tofacitinib etc.
