I have 1.5 mg/dl creatinine. I have seen my physician and he told me to drink 3 ltrs of water and check the reading after 1 week along with ultrasound of abdomen, calcium - phosphorus ratio, urine routine. My hbl1c is 6.5. Had 10.5 in 2001 and in control. 9 months back went up to 7.8.Any suggestions about what to do about creatinine levels? Physician suggested that we will change the drug which is 250 mg in the morning and night of metformin after the results of creatinine readings after 1 week if it is still elevated.

Can drinking water with lemon prevent kidney stones? Also, I have been told not to drink city water. What is the best water to drink?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

Can drinking water with lemon prevent kidney stones? Also, I have been told not to drink city water. What is the best...
1) Drink plenty of clean water.- Drinking at least four liters of water every day will not only help prevent kidney stones from forming, but also quickly eliminate any small stones that may have already formed. 2) Add fresh lemon, lime and apple cider vinegar to daily beverages. -Taking this a step further, adding fresh lemon or lime juice, or apple cider vinegar, to your beverages throughout the day will help alkalize your body, effectively blocking the formation of kidney stones. These alkalizing juices will also help quickly dissolve any existing stones that might be present in your kidneys, keeping them clean and stone-free. 3) Eat foods that are naturally high in calcium - Dietary calcium actually binds with calcium oxalate, the substance that makes up most kidney stones, and crystallizes and flushes it from the body before it has a chance to form into stones. The best foods in this category include leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, nuts and seeds, and raw, grass-fed milk and butter 4) Supplement with magnesium citrate, B vitamins every day-, Be sure to eat plenty of magnesium-rich foods every day -- these include avocados, broccoli, raw cacao, beans, bananas, and lentils 5) Stick to a 'low oxalate' diet. - Eliminate high oxalate foods from your diet if you have a propensity for kidney stones. Such foods include black tea, grains, and certain nuts and vegetables.

Hi, Calculus measuring 6.4*5.2 cms is noted in the right distal ureter 1.2 cm proximal to the vesicoureteral junction. This is my CT scan report. What can be possible treatment to this? Can anyone help me with this?

MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Pune
Hi, Calculus measuring 6.4*5.2 cms is noted in the right distal ureter 1.2 cm proximal to the vesicoureteral junction...
The stone in the ureter causes severe pain when body tries to push it down by vigorous peristalsis in the ureter. That is called as ureteric colick. Sometimes that pain is so severe that the person feels nauseated and feels like vomiting. The narrowest portion in the ureter is vescico-ureteral junction. Generally stones of the size less than 7 mm are passed down by the body over the period of time. Some times the stones could be larger size or could be stuck at the same level detected by periodic USG or the X-ray examination. In that case the procedures like scoot guided removal are recommended to get the stone out. Regular follow up with your surgeon or urologist is advised. Meantime I will advise you to keep on taking adequate quantity of water so that you create good amount of urine which will help you to flush it out.

My father is suffering from kidney failure, as per the words of doctors there are cysts in kidney along with 3 stones in each kidney. Doctors are recommending dialysis twice in a week for full life time. But my father is refusing to get dialysis done. Is there any other options or also please guide what kind of food he should have?

DNB (Radiodiagnosis), DMRD, MBBS
Radiologist, Bangalore
Hi, Thanks for writing in. Cysts in kidneys at elderly age are acceptable, though the size of cysts in case of your father is not specified in the query. I guess that the stones are causing obstruction to urinary flow and consequently there is obstructive uropathy which has led to kidney problems requiring dialysis. The dialysis is to remove the toxins from his blood because the kidneys are not functioning well. It will help to know his serum creatinine and creatinine clearance for last few months. Kidney transplant is an effective way if a patient does not want to go through dialysis but it is not for every patient. There are certain patient criteria before kidney transplant can be thought of. I am not too sure if your father is among the probable candidates for a kidney transplant. Please discuss it with your doctor. Regards,
