Dear lybrate-user, Mental illnesses are of different types. Each one has different symptomatology. Your sister-in-law's changing moods and withdrawn behaviour (not talking to anyone) are symptoms of mental illness. That does not mean, that your sister-in-law is mentally ill. There are some more criterias and tests that need to be done, before we diagnose. Therefore, please take her to a psychiatrist and get her diagnosed.

I'm a 24 year old male suffering from OCD. 3 months back I took Ativan for only a week. This has caused me massive weight gain. How to remove this weight gain. I work out hard daily and my diet is also drawn to a minimal level but still the extra weight has not gone. Is there any med for removing this weight?

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, just one week of ativan can not cause so much increase of weight. It might be due to your ocd itself or depression due to ocd or any other medical or hormonal illness. You are youg you can reduce weight with diet and exercise itslef. Consult a dietician often and go ahead methodically. There are drugs to reduce weight. There are operations like bariatric surgery to reduce weight. They come at a later stage with proper diagnosis and work up.

Hi, I am discussing here regarding my brother's serious health issue, mentally as well as physically. He is 27 years old and his body weight is 120 kg. But he is not at all serious also for his professional life. No control over diet, he drinks, smoke. When we say something he becomes aggressive. I'm very worried, don't know what to do. Please can you guide?

M.Sc - Food & Nutrition, PG Diploma In Diabetes Education
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Gurgaon
If we talk in terms of Ayurveda, all these are signs of Imbalanced VATA and PITTA of body. Thus he doesn't have control over his thoughts and actions. He need to change all his lifestyle and eating pattern. But if he is not willing to follow these, we can start with Some Himalyan herbs, in a couple of week as the balance will rise his aggressiveness, weight, habit of taking drinks and smoking will gradually reduce of his own, you need not to ask him to stop anything.

Your age may be a huge contributor and if that is true you are looking at a two year period of difficulties only. I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

Hi lybrate-user, I can understand your feelings. As your doctor has said that it will take another year to complete the treatment so allow yourself that time and accept it fully. Once the acceptance come from within it would be easier to cope with the symptoms. I would suggest you to start some relaxation exercise. You should do pranayam exercises for at least fifteen minutes a day Go for a brisk walk (if your doctor allows) daily for half an hour with sports shoes on. Have healthy breakfast. Listen some soothing music and have good laugh watching funny videos on YouTube. Also write diary of your feelings. Have lots of salad and water in your diet. Keep yourself busy in some positive activities. Follow these advices and you will feel better. All the best.

I don't have effective thinking and attitude power please suggest some options to increase that.

Dear , effective thinking and attitude are to be cultivated and are mainly dependent on sharp brain. The best method to improve your concentration, memory power and recollection etc is to use your brain creatively again and again. Doing number puzzles, creative hobies like painting, games like chess etc can sharpen your brain and improve concentration. Exercise plays an important part in sharpening the brain and in many aspects of memory. Nutritious food including green vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals and pulses are beneficial. Alcohol, nicotine, drugs, coffee, red meat etc are not that good for sharpening brain and memory power. Being happy and cheerful also contributes positively. Take care.

Discuss with your doctor so he/she gives you medicine without sexual side effects. Plus 30 minutes regular walk. 30 minutes mindfulness meditation or vipassana or hypnosis for relaxation. You work daily, then get money. Similarly you have to work on anxiety daily for it to go away. Write your worries at a fixed time of the day.

Hello, it is best to consult a psychiatrist early in depression to prevent impairment in your personal and professional life. You could choose either medicines or counselling depending upon severity of illness. In the meanwhile, you can:- 1) aerobic exercise for 30 mins daily like walking or running 2) cultivate some hobby that gives you pleasure. 3) interact more with friends and family members. 4) music helps in lifting mood. 5) do yoga, pranayama or meditation, whatever comes easy to you. If these things don't help much, don't shy in seeing a psychiatrist. Take care.

Hi I'm 25 year old I work hard on any work ,but if I didn't get good result. I'm depressing and I'm unable concentrate for next time. And I'm addicted using mobile for much more time.

General Physician,
You have to divert your mind practically and avoid using phone unnecessarily and your willpower is very important .10 Natural Depression Treatments Being depressed can make you feel helpless. But Along with therapy and sometimes medication, there's a lot you can do on your own to fight back. Changing your behaviour – your physical work, lifestyle, and even your way of thinking -- are all natural depression treatments .these tips can help you feel better -- starting right now. 1. Get in a routine. If you’re depressed, you need a routine depression can strip away the structure from your life. One day melts into the next. Setting a gentle daily schedule can help you get back on track. 2. When you're depressed, you may feel like you can't accomplish anything. That makes you feel worse about yourself. To push back, set daily goals for yourself. "Start very small,” "Make your goal something that you can succeed at, like doing the dishes every other day. As you start to feel better, you can add more challenging daily goals. 3. Exercise- It temporarily boosts feel-good chemicals called endorphins. It may also have long-term benefits for people. Regular exercise seems to encourage the brain to rewire itself in positive ways. How much exercise do you need? You don’t need to run marathons to get a benefit. Just walking a few times a week can help. 4. Eat healthy. There is no magic / special; diet that corrects depression. It's a good idea to watch what you eat, though. If depression tends to make you overeat, getting in control of your eating will help you feel better. Although nothing is definitive, there’s evidence that foods with omega-3 fatty acids (such as fish) and folic acid (such as spinach) could help ease depression. 5. Get enough sleep. Depression can make it hard to get enough sleep and can make depression worse. What can you do? Start by making some changes to your lifestyle. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try not to nap. Take all the distractions out of your bedroom -- no computer and no TV. In time, you may find your sleep improves. 6. Take on responsibilities. When you’re depressed, you may want to pull back from life and give up your responsibilities at home and at work. Staying involved and having daily responsibilities can work as a natural depression treatment. They ground you and give you a sense of accomplishment. If you're not up to full-time school or work, that’s fine. Think about part-time. If that seems like too much, consider volunteer work. 7. Challenge negative thoughts. In your fight against depression, a lot of the work is mental -- changing how you think. When you're depressed, you leap to the worst possible conclusions. You might feel like no one likes you, but is there real evidence for that? You might feel like the most worthless person on the planet, but is that really likely? It takes practice, but in time you can beat back those negative thoughts before they get out of control. 8. Check with your doctor before using supplements. "There's promising evidence for certain supplements for depression, Those include fish oil, folic acid. Always check with your doctor before starting any supplement, especially if you’re already taking medications 9. Do something new. When you’re depressed, you’re in a rut. Push yourself to do something different. Go to a museum. Pick up a used book and read it on a park bench. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Take a language class. "When we challenge ourselves to do something different, there are chemical changes in the brain, "Trying something new alters the levels of [the brain chemical] dopamine, which is associated with pleasure, enjoyment, and learning. 10. Try to have fun. If you’re depressed, make time for things you enjoy. What if nothing seems fun anymore? "That's just a symptom of depression, You have to keep trying anyway. As strange as it might sound, you have to work at having fun. Plan things you used to enjoy, even if they feel like a chore. Keep going to the movies. Keep going out with friends for dinner. When you're depressed, you can lose the knack for enjoying life, you have to relearn how to do it. In time, fun things really will feel fun again.

Psychiatrist, Delhi
Hi, Thanks for writing in, welcome to the forum. We need to analyze various aspects of this situation. Ideally, it would be great if one were completely free from all medicines during pregnancy. But, OCD itself can also cause considerable difficulties to mother and the foetus. Therefore, adequate control of the OCD is also needed and important. Depending upon the severity, nature of symptoms, duration of illness and previous response to treatment, it may or may not possible to treat the OCD with CBT instead of medicines. If the medicines are needed, we must use less number of medicines as possible and at the least dose that is needed. I notice that you are on Daxid 100, uvox 100 and rexipra 10. If you are taking all three together, some reduction of medicines seems possible and likely, but will need a careful and detailed evaluation. The medicines listed above are not particularly damaging to the fetus but if it is possible to decrease or take some of them away, we must attempt to do that. Take care!

The symptoms you describe are purely that of stress and anxiety related affecting your mood in a depressive manner. The good news is dat its resolvable with some professional assistance. So do not hold yourself back from getting your own health back. Just go n see a psychiatrist of your choice and facilitate your freedom from this sucky state of mind. Hope this helps. Take care.
