Hello doctor, I would like to improve my brain activity and memory power in order to face various competitive exams. Will you please tell me?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food. You may also include these noted foods that are good for your brain health: Brain-Friendly Foods MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. But the MIND approach “specifically includes foods and nutrients that medical literature and data show to be good for the brain, such as berries,” says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center. You eat things from these 10 food groups: •Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week •Other vegetables: At least one a day •Nuts: Five servings a week •Berries: Two or more servings a week •Beans: At least three servings a week •Whole grains: Three or more servings a day •Fish: Once a week •Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week •Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil. •Wine: One glass a day You avoid: •Red meat: Less than four servings a week •Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily •Cheese: Less than one serving a week •Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week •Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week.

Mene 8 days pehle smoking quit krdi h fir bhi meri stamina kam hi h & ab heart attack ka chance kam bhi ho gya h na?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Yes, you have saved yourself well in time that you can recover from all the damages from the smoking you have indulged in so far. Stamina will come along if you exercise gradually increasing the length of the work out. Breathe through your nostrils only when exercising and do mostly aerobic exercises. Congratulations for your excellent decision and keep it up for life.

For the last 1 year I am addicted to smoking, I take at least three cigarettes a day. Please suggest any solution to stop smoking.

DNB (Psychiatry), DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Smoking cigarettes daily is a behavioural pattern which if suddenly stopped may cause some degree of discomfort. It is really an appreciable gesture to stop smoking some ways to give up smoking 1. Read about tobacco use and benefits of quitting from internet to build up the motivation to quit. 2. Check the mood state or the company or situations where you need to smoke 3. Try using nicotine chewing gums in place of cigarettes. Consult a deaddiction specialist or psychiatrist for further help.

Hello, goodmorning sir, my opinions is my memory power is very less. So iam to remember some thing. Suggest please plz.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

Stress can foil memory and concentration. The distraction it leads to will not allow focus on a particular topic or subject. So locate the stressor and deal with it soon to recover good memory. It will be easier to work with a counselor on the emotions that are causing the stress. Although concentration is different to memory, they can affect each other. In the meantime do some of the following: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, broccoli, blueberries, fish, coconut oil, wheat sprouts, tomatoes, sunflower seeds, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. Is it normal for young boys (teenagers) to sexually fantasize about women who are older than them? I would like some psychological as well as sociological advice. Please note that in the question I have intentionally written women and not girls so as to point out the age difference I'm talking about. Thank you.

It is fine to fantasize about anything or anyone unless and untill its a cause of distress for you or people around you. You are free to make choices and no one can stop you from that. So till the time you are comfortable with your thoughts its normal. If you have any specific doubts or query, you may ask

I am 26 years old. I had a baby in 2011 n my doctor had asked me to eat calcium tablets for six months but due to some tension n stress I had those calcium pills for not even one month after delivery. N no proper diet. I always feel weak n dull. Never felt fresh after baby so now should I start some calcium supplement available in the market or what should I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Of course you should take them, even now. You must have a proper diet because you are suffering from malnutrition. In fact I suggest that you take a multivitamin and multi-mineral as supplements. It is better if you took vitamin d3 along with calcium, which is how it is found anyway. You may also eat a lot of greens, expose yourself to some sunlight every day, and do some weight-bearing exercises, for a natural way to good health regarding calcium uptake.

Uska yeh behavour se uske husband ko lagta hai riya pagal hai. husband use mental bolte hai. Kya wo sach me pagal hai mental hai. She need treatment? please suggest

MD - Pathology

No I don't think so. Loving someone so much is not an illness. If her husband doesn't like this behaviour of hers and she loves him so much then she should try to modify her nature accordingly. They should try to understand basic difference of nature among individuals and be tolerant towards each other.

Hi, Losing a loved one can leave anyone like an emotional wreck. For some intensity of emotions fades with times while memories remain on our mind forever. There is a tranformation in life that we confront unwillingly on loss of a loved one but loss does not necessarily need to be for the worse in the long term. I understand you will never be able to forget but we shall be concerned if the grief continues for amvery long time. To help you I need to know some more information about you. What is your age? Are there any others difficulties you have been facing apart from loss of interest? How is your sleep & appetite? Some people feel its worthless to live? They get ideas of hopelessness. Is it the case with you. Plz come back with answers. ALL THE BEST!

What is the better treatment to stop anger bcoz due to anger there is very problem creates.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You cannot reduce emotions. I guess you may be thinking of ways to avoid them: that also is not possible in any healthy way. You have to face your feelings and learn to express them in appropriate ways. All feelings are good. They are a very important aspect of the human personality. Most people have a problem in expressing emotions. Some, like you, want to avoid them. If people use denial, they may not experience the emotion but the unconscious mind is continuously registering the feeling and it moves it to an organ (which may differ from person to person), and that unexpressed feeling will stress that organ to either make it malfunction or lead to its total dysfunction. This is the psychosomatic effect that sometimes entails a whole lot of medical interventions and hospitalizations. Why do all that! just deal with your feelings by expressing them, as soon as possible, and always.

It is obvious that there is some lurking fear related basis for your discomfort i.e. you have an unresolved fear that has probably been provoked now for some reason. It is now so severe that you suspect, in a paranoid manner, that the bad will somehow turn back to harm you. This could happen if your defense mechanisms are strained for some reason or that you have not been keeping yourself fit in psychological and emotional ways that there is a vulnerability, and your mind is becoming suggestive. The ideal way to counter such imagined possibilities is to do a reality check: Is it even remotely possible and what is the evidence you have? If you have a confidante, you could crosscheck with that person to authenticate your belief. Mostly, you will find that your paranoid mind has been suggesting the possibility. There is also the likelihood of being guilty about something and that as a punishment for that crime you will suffer some retribution. You can also meet with a counselor and talk out these fears and get some realistic feedback and as well receive some training to stabilize your emotions and rejig your defenses. Regular vigorous aerobic physical exercise, good sleep, a stress-free lifestyle, some spiritual strengthening exercises, and proper sleep should take care of you rather well.
