Tips To Manage Stress Effectively!

Stress is the reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed upon them. It arises when they worry and can no more cope up. Stress is the “wear and tear” our minds and bodies experience as we attempt to cope with our continually changing environment.

How do you know you are stressed?

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS:

COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS:

  • Decrease in concentration & memory
  • Indecisiveness, mind racing or going blank
  • Confusion, loss of sense of humor
  • Mental slowness

EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS:

  • Irritability
  • Nervousness
  • Depression, reduced sleep
  • Anger, frustration, worry
  • Fear, impatience, hopelessness

BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS:

  • Nervous habits, increased eating, smoking, drinking
  • ProcrastinatingCrying, yelling, blaming and even throwing things or hittinSuicidal thoughts

HOW TO MANAGE STRESS?

1. Most important thing is to accept that stress might be playing a role.

2. Do not be in denial mode, and wait for things to get corrected by itself, symptoms can start suddenly, but it will not disappear just like that.

3. Recognize the source and personal contribution to stress ( family situation, work related, financial, kids, relationships etc).

4. Remember there are no quick fixes to reduction of stress except working on damage limitation strategies.

5. It involves commitment and motivation to remain healthy despite adversities around us.

6. Don't hide your problems. Share your feelings with someone or write a dairy.

7. Practice relaxation techniques regularly - Om chanting, pranayama, yoga, exercise, prayer etc.

8. Follow healthy nutritious diet pattern - lot of fruits, nuts, vegetables, pulses etc.

9. Try to repeat things which make you feel good - listening to music, reading, dancing etc.

10. Maintain a good sleep hygiene.

11. If things are worse or you feel it is hard to cope, seek help. Most of the situations can be dealt by counseling and guidance, but you should be open to it.

12. Life is beautiful, everybody is entitled to have a good life. Happiness is within us. Always remember if you do not take any initiative to make life better nobody can help you.

This is unfortunately very true in many homes. But you must remember that you are you: absolutely unique and can be compared to others in terms of progress and failure too. That does not mean you have to imitate the other persons to become good. Give them a deaf ear or talk to a counselor about your problems. Perhaps the counselor will want to speak to your parents and help you deal with it. Running away will solve nothing.

My parents are the best one. I mean it. When I had slip disc n unable to cross road my mom with me. I had appendicitis operation my father took leave. I got divorced my mom n dad were by my side alimony. I bought flat, my contribution was 5% n my father's 95%.I lost job n father rejoined PNB under special case to support me. Out of 22k he paying my 8k emi n transferring me 5k n only 13k for him n mom. I feel very bad not getting a job inspite of trying and asking him money. Life has taken a U TURN after marriage. I joined yoga class to focus on positive side but still I am getting back the feeling I am so unsuccessful n my friends are getting a package of 10LPA, enjoying with their wives, some are father to children, go on long drives n I am not a part of this, I am not able to make my parents proud, my mom said me I embarrass her . From 2009-2013 may everything was good. Since then life has been so cruel. Please guide.

Dear Debashis , Life is cruel no doubt. Things do not turn out to be as we would like them to - that's a hard fact of life. Despite all this , one should keep trying. Not having a job doesn't mean you can not be independent or earn . Look for your strength areas and your skills. According to your skills, start to work from home. Or as you did in the past join yoga classes, read , meet people and something should come up pretty soon. The key to success is to keep looking for opportunities in the most unexpected places.

I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food. You may also include these noted foods that are good for your brain health: Brain-Friendly Foods MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. But the MIND approach “specifically includes foods and nutrients that medical literature and data show to be good for the brain, such as berries,” says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center. You eat things from these 10 food groups: •Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week •Other vegetables: At least one a day •Nuts: Five servings a week •Berries: Two or more servings a week •Beans: At least three servings a week •Whole grains: Three or more servings a day •Fish: Once a week •Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week •Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil. •Wine: One glass a day You avoid: •Red meat: Less than four servings a week •Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily •Cheese: Less than one serving a week •Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week •Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week.

I have a diagnosis of depression and also generated anxiety disorder. I currently take Zoloft 100mg daily. Also Depakote 250mg 2 tabs every night as it makes me very drowsy. I've had a trial month of my psychiatrist taking me off of the Depakote and I believe I was extremely moody and very emotional the entire month. When I am taking the Depakote I feel better but my boyfriend describes my mood as up and down up and down throughout the day. He feels I am very moody. Which I feel contributes a negative impact on our relationship. I have a dx of PTSD r/t the tragic death of my husband. He passed in 2007 and the only medication I ever took while married was an antidepressant. After his death is when all these emotions and depression started and I've been treated for the last almost 9 years on July 31st. My anxiety is so extreme that I get extremely nervous to go to public functions and even family functions. I will have a panic attack causing me to feel like my blood sugar plumes he'd. I'm sweaty, increased pulse rate, weakness, vomiting. I just can't function or even get into the shower. Wondering of you have any other ideas on medications to help with my severe anxiety. I also take 2mg Xanax extended release and 0.5 mg instant release for break through anxiety. I also take adderall 30 mg ER and 10 mg at 2 pm. This has helped with my anxiety and also my quality of life except my afternoons I'm very fatigued and tired. I feel like my adderall needs to be increased. Any ideas?

Hello, If you are open to opt for some other mode of treatment, then only can recommend you homoeopathy along with yoga. (But don't stop your ongoing medication all of sudden rather taper it off). Practicing yoga with homoeopathic medication helps you in releasing the stress from your body. Brisk walk in a park will help you inhale more fresh air and oxygen for good functioning of the cells and tissues of the body. Medication: Take Schwabe’s Bacopa Monierri 1x/ thrice daily and Kali Phos. 6x/ once at night. Yogasana: Practice the following poses if you don’t have any medical condition or pregnancy or else take an advice from your concern doctor and then only perform these. 1. Balasana: Sit on your heels with your big toes touching and hands resting on your thighs. Lower your belly and chest to rest between your knees, bringing your forehead to the floor. Relax your arms back beside your shins, palms facing up. Soften your breath by taking 5 to 10 long, deep inhalations and exhalations. 2. Savasana: lie back, letting your body sink into and open around the support. End in a supported pose on your back with a folded blanket under the length of the spine to help arch the upper and middle back, and lengthen the lower back. Move your arms a comfortable distance away from your body and anything else around you. Turn your palms to face up. Separate your legs a natural distance apart. Relax your feet and let them roll open. Finally, do a mental scan from head to toe: Where are you holding tension. Release it from every part of your body—including your heart and head. 3. Bhujanasana: Slowly slide forward from Child's Pose to lie facedown. Press your toes and forehead gently into the floor. Rest your palms lightly on the floor on either side of your chest with fingertips pointing forward and elbows bent and hugging in toward your ribcage. Inhale and lift your chest from the heart, pressing only very lightly into your palms and mostly using your back strength to hold your shoulders and chest up. Soften your shoulders. Then lift your hands off the floor completely, broadening across your collarbones and reaching your heart up. Take a couple of deep, slow breaths here. Then as you exhale, place your palms back down and gently lower your chest to floor.

Good Morning ~ It appears to me that you have always had suspicious about your wife and so that has been confirmed now with your keeping a secret camera. You found that your wife was having sex with another man and you are upset about it. I am sure you want to do something about it. That something is very important and it can make of break your marriage. If you have kids it is important that you make sure they do not suffer. In your history you have made sure that you mention that you are not sexually active and masturbate. This may not be a good idea. The wisest way to go about it is to show you wife the video you made and confront her with it. It may also work well to actually know what she thinks. If she has remorse and regrets the episode to the extent where she feels guilty then it may be a good idea to patch things up for your kids sake. Masturbation does not harm memory, it is just your thinking. Masturbation is a very healthy form of sexual outlet, do not feel guilty about it. Nearly 99% of men and more than 60% of women masturbate. It starts from adolescence and goes on in some people even till death. The pleasure (orgasm) from masturbation is said to be unique from sexual intercourse. In men, most of the liquid contains only water and some fructose and hormones. Hence it does not drain your energy. Many equate masturbation/ seminal fluid loss to lack of energy, impotency and so on. Many quacks, religious heads and pseudo healers also propagate the idea that masturbation is a disorder/ and wrongful behavior and instill fear on the mind of innocent men and women (we can see posters in train and bus stand, offering help for this behavior). Consult a psychiatrist, if you have excessive masturbation guilt or compulsive masturbation. Compulsive masturbation is when a person continues with frequent masturbation neglecting his/ her other work like education, job or social obligations. In fact masturbation reduces the sexual tension and helps focus on task at hand better.

Dear , memory is very tricky thing. You are actually talking about recollection here. You will not be able to recollect if you are anxious, busy, stressed, tired etc. We also find it difficult to recollect many things which we never memorized. There is nothing wrong in that. Still, if you feel you have memory problems, we will do a series of tests to ascertain your memory. Initially I will assess you through telephone interview. Dear lybrate-user, thanks for the question. I understand your concerns. I went through the details. Anxiety is a disorder. Not a disease. Mental diseases are usually treated with the help of psychiatric medicines. Mental disorders are treated with the help of psychotherapy, life style changes and relaxation methods. Panic attacks are always due to the underlying anxiety disorders. To clear panic attacks, you need to treat and clear anxiety disorder. Psychotherapy techniques include rational emotive therapy, cognitive behavior therapy etc. You should consult a psychologist for these therapies. In the mean time, you can start physical exercise at least for one hour and breathing exercises for 10minutes daily. I hope this answer satisfies you. I am available for further clarifications.
