Symptoms & 3 Common Causes Of Genophobia

MBBS
Sexologist, Delhi
Symptoms & 3 Common Causes Of Genophobia

Genophobia or coitophobia is the irrational psychological fear of intercourse. It is a type of a phobia and people suffering from it fill all or most of the criteria of specific phobia according to the ICD (The International Statistical Classification of Diseases). Genophobic people may be terrified of sexual intercourse or all acts involving sex. It is different from erotophobia in the sense erotophobia is the irrational fear of sexuality and not the act in itself.

Causes:

  1. The causes of genophobia may be attributed to different experiences and origins according to different psychological perspectives. According to the psychoanalytic perspective, genophobia may be caused by the rigid or extremely religious upbringing, which affected the development of ego, making the individual fear all acts that are sexual because it causes moral anxiety and a severe clash of the superego (ethical portion of one's personality)and i'd (primitive component of one's personality).
  2. According to the learning perspective, genophobia may develop due to an unpleasant sexual experience such as rape or molestation. Rape Trauma Syndrome leads the survivor to relive the trauma several times and develop apprehension. They may begin to fear sex eventually by relating it to the unpleasant experience, eventually leading to genophobia. It may also be caused if the individual observes sexual acts that are traumatizing in nature, in media or otherwise.
  3. It may also result from severe performance anxiety, especially for those who lack sexual experience and have abstained from sex for a prolonged period of time. There is also a chance that other phobias, such as the fear of diseases, especially STDs, may lead to a fear of sexual acts. Some people might relate sexual intercourse with acquiring diseases, thus leading to the development of genophobia.

Symptoms: Symptoms of genophobia include the fear of sexual intercourse and all acts within, breathlessness, nausea, dizziness, feeling sick and fear of losing control. All these symptoms take place in the context of sexual acts.

Treatment: Genophobia is treated like all other phobias. Therapeutic technique such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (a conversation centric therapy that focuses on how thoughts and beliefs can affect one's actions) is widely used in the treatment of genophobia along with medications. The therapeutic technique varies from patient to patient. For instance, the therapeutic technique used for a rape survivor would be completely different from that which is used for an individual with a fear of STDs. With proper treatment, genophobia is curable, eventually allowing the individual to have a particularly healthy sex life. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

Dear, you don't need sympathy, because sympathy makes people weak. You need motivation. You need to work hard, entertain yourself, play games etc. Because you need to move forward with agility. For many years you suffered with your mental illness. Now onwards, decide to live with dignity. That would be first step towards cure. Secondly you need to take medicines regularly and practice psychotherapy and meditation regularly to calm you. You may contact me in case you want further clarification. Take care.

General Physician,
Best age to stop smoking is before 40 ,In fact do not start all Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 Only strong will power, determination, attending AA meetings and diverting mind when tempted will help you stop alcohol or may need professional help from a psychiatrist or de addiction centre. Try to do meditation and yoga. Read good books and listen to music and if you are believer attend Bhajans Alcohol causes 7 types of cancer, including breast, mouth and bowel cancers. When you drink alcohol, cancer-causing chemicals are formed. Alcohol also affects hormone levels and makes cells even more likely to be damaged by smoking. The less alcohol you drink, the lower the risk of cancer. No type of alcohol is better or worse than another, it is the alcohol itself that leads to the damage, regardless of whether it is in wine, beer or spirits. And drinking and smoking together are even worse for you. Not everyone who drinks alcohol will develop cancer. But on the whole, scientists have found that some cancers are more common in people who drink more alcohol than others. Every year, alcohol causes 4% of cancers .Tips to cut down on alcohol. There are lots of simple ways to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink. It can help to work out if there are particular times or situations when you tend to have a drink, whether that’s a bad day at work or a weekly pub quiz tradition, and plan what you’ll say and do differently next time. Have more alcohol-free days a week. For liver health it’s best to have at least 2 days off alcohol in a row each week. Try agreeing on certain days with your partner or a friend and help each other and stick to it. If you are planning to drink alcohol, decide on a limit in advance and make sure you don’t go over it. Swap every other alcoholic drink for a soft one – starting with your first drink. Try shandy instead of a pint of beer, or swap some wine for soda and have a spritzer. Don’t stock up on beer, wine or spirits at home. Finish one drink before pouring another, because topping up drinks makes it harder to keep track of how much you’ve had and when you planned to stop. Avoid buying drinks in rounds, that way you don’t have to keep pace with anyone. Tell a friend or partner that you’re cutting down on alcohol, they can support you – or even join you.

My 15 year old daughter otherwise an intelligent girl gets v depressed in the evenings. Shes going to appear for her 10th board exams in March. She says she can't define what she feels but she feels like crying as evenings make her sad. How can I help her?

Well she might be having apprehensive anxiety about doing well in the exam. Excessive anxiety leads to depression. Depression caused by stress or exogenous depression tend to be worse in the evening. Please start talking to her, tell you love her and would continue to love her irrespective of the result. Reinforce the hardworking she has been doing and that is what is on her control. Exams are merely a way to test your knowledge and is not the ultimate. You can see a counsellor if necessary.

Hi, You have problem of cross dressing. It can be cured if you don't like it. There is a treatment for this too, but for now would like you to practice Mindful Breathing The primary goal of mindful breathing is simply a calm, nonjudging awareness, allowing thoughts and feelings to come and go without getting caught up in them. Sit comfortably, with your eyes closed and your spine reasonably straight. Bring your attention to your breathing. Imagine that you have a balloon in your tummy. Every time you breathe in, the balloon inflates. Each time you breathe out, the balloon deflates. Notice the sensations in your abdomen as the balloon inflates and deflates. Your abdomen rising with the in-breath, and falling with the out-breath. Thoughts will come into your mind, and that’s okay, because that’s just what the human mind does. Simply notice those thoughts, then bring your attention back to your breathing. Likewise, you can notice sounds, physical feelings, and emotions, and again, just bring your attention back to your breathing. You don’t have to follow those thoughts or feelings, don’t judge yourself for having them, or analyse them in any way. It’s okay for the thoughts to be there. Just notice those thoughts, and let them drift on by, bringing your attention back to your breathing. Whenever you notice that your attention has drifted off and is becoming caught up in thoughts or feelings, simply note that the attention has drifted, and then gently bring the attention back to your breathing. It's okay and natural for thoughts to enter into your awareness, and for your attention to follow them. No matter how many times this happens, just keep bringing your attention back to your breathing. Practice this daily for 15 minutes. Get back to me then All the best.

How can we control stress
And in what way we can control and please reply to my questions.
If the work load is causing the stress, learn to manage your work well. You could talk to your supervisor and tell him about the stress and he may suggest some better ways of doing what you are doing. Stress is eventually all about the perception of stress. If you change the outlook, the result will be 350`different. If there is a possibility to delegate some work to someone else, please do so. To feel energized you must eat healthy food involving whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Drink green tea and a lot of buttermilk every day. You may eat an egg every day too: it is a multivitamin and multi-mineral, all built into one. You must exercise regularly, especially the aerobic kind. Get at least 8 hours of good sleep and the more you sleep before midnight the better. Learn some stress management and meditation. You must identify our feelings and make sure you express all of them, appropriately. Maintain good relations, especially at home. Deep breathing exercises help to calm a person, immediately. Do not indulge in drinking and smoking.

Hello doctor. My father age 54 has a habit of taking tabacco I advised not to take and he did it also. But after 2 weeks he started again taking it when I asked my dad he said its a difficult to leave without tobacco its just hypnotising my dad. Kindly advice me what to do.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

Do be sympathetic to the man: it is very difficult because there are so many conditions associated to the habit. But the good news is that even if you fail many times, he must try to stop it again. It is through perseverance that success can be achieved especially in this habit. If is too difficult then he can go for counseling to get the necessary support and to help identify the emotions, the stress, and the situations that make him want to smoke. When he decides, it must be done immediately and abruptly. Waiting another day will jeopardize the decision. He needs to identify with why he smokes: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. He should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time he feels like smoking (try yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need, for a little while. If the urge is too strong, then he could use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. He may join smokers anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep him occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i. E. At least for the first 21 days. Above all, announce it to everyone that he has quit smoking. He must persevere with the best support until he defeats this addiction.

Dear Dr, I am 73 years young but getting older due to depression caused by my son 30 yrs but drug addict since 7 years and till now i have spent most of my savings in his rehab expenditure , Now i think i should expell him from my responsibility , but am afraid once he is out of rehab he may become a criminal , THis is the cause of my constant worry and my family( Wife ) depression. Please help me with practical solution

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

You will need to stick by your son because he has a disease of horrible consequences. Something went wrong somewhere in his life and while it is easy to blame him, he needs all your help and support. There is a good rehabilitation center in Bangalore who will keep him for however long it takes to cure him. The financial expenditure is very reasonable. This is the best under the circumstances. It is true that he could resort to crime, and worse still he may cause you grievous harm, if he is not fully cured. He obviously does not have his own resources, so he needs your support. If you are agreeable, kindly contact me for the center details.

Every time you recover from the episodes of seizures (" forget what you are doing), please note what kind of activities you were doing, time, your emotional state etc. This may help to figure out some ways for better management of your problem. Nadisuddi technique from pranayama, which is a technique of yoga, properly learned and regularly practiced can help you by calming down your nervous impulses in the brain and increasing oxygen levels.

Depression- Symptoms, Self-Help, Coping Tips and Treatment

Feeling tired all the time? Do you feel that you can’t focus on things anymore? Have you lost interest in things and people you once loved spending time with? Does your temper fly off the hook at the drop of a hat? If it is a ‘yes’ to the questions above, then you might be slowly but steadily succumbing to depression. Depression is a psychological disorder that is characterized by symptoms of extreme sadness, worthlessness and hopelessness over a prolonged period of time.

Symptoms

  1. Lack of Interest: This is probably the starkest of all the symptoms. Hobbies or activities that you used to enjoy once no longer catch your fancy. You do not find little or no pleasure in social activities or any other hobby of yours anymore.
  2. A constant Feeling of Hopelessness: You tend to develop a negative outlook towards life in general, as you feel that the current situation will never get better and will only worsen.
  3. Loss of Appetite: Loss of appetite is a common feature of depression; it can also lead to rapid weight loss. If engulfed by depression, one generally tends to ignore food completely, remain hungry, both of which contribute to the vicious cycle that depression is.
  4. Changes in Sleep Patterns: Insomnia is a condition that is marked by a sheer inability to sleep, no matter how physically exhausted one is. Depression tends to exhibit this particular symptom in maximum cases. However, oversleeping, or sleeping more than the sufficient hours is also common.
  5. Reckless Behavior: Depression makes one more prone to reckless behavior; one generally develops an angry and irritated persona; this in turn, may make one to exhibit reckless and rash behavior.
  6. Lack of Energy and Focus: Depression causes one to feel fatigued and sluggish the entire day. Factors such as a total loss of appetite contribute to this particular symptom. Stemming from these symptoms are two other major occurrences; an inability to focus on anything and an inability to decide on anything.

Self-help, Coping tips and Treatment-

  1. Connect with different people: Being isolated from the rest can and usually aggravates symptoms of depression. So, reach out to other people and your loved ones; talk to your loved ones and try to empty your mind when you are having a one-to-one with them. Interacting and talking to others will make you feel better and should go a long way in taking that huge rock off your chest.
  2. Try to ditch that sedentary lifestyle; go out in the open: An early morning jog can feel daunting at first but the benefits are immense. Exercising regularly has been proven to be as effective as anti-depressants in combatting depression. Even a 20 minutes jog early in the morning releases ‘endorphins’ in the body, also known as the ‘feel good hormones’. These hormones induce a feeling of happiness and relaxation, thus taking your mind off any particular event or circumstance that has been ruining your sanctity of late.
  3. Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: Avoid alcohol and drugs to come out of your sadness; they have never helped and will never help. Taking these substances provides a temporary solution to depression, as it will again show up once the effects of the intoxicants wear off. It will also interfere with other medications that you may be taking to combat depression, thus reducing their potency.
  4. It’s high time you bought the meditating mat: Sleep has a beneficial effect on your mental health as it has been proven to improve memory and other cognitive and brain functions. Another way to improve brain function and be more relaxed is to meditate regularly. Meditation induces a state of relaxation, and if done on a regular basis, can be an effective treatment for depression. Meditation also helps with an improved focus and reduced anxiety.
  5. Medications can always help: Medications such as anti-depressants are administered to treat depression. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), including citalopram, fluoxetine and sertraline are the most commonly administered medications to cure this condition. However, it is advised to try the abovementioned methods first so that you do not have to depend on medications alone; the reason being that these medications do have their fair share of side effects.

Yes it could be a psychological feeling or a withdrawal from your long term habit. You can try using nicotex gum instead. And slowly you can stop the gum also.
