Are there any long-term effects associated with taking ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) medications? If so, what are they and what medications are implicated? What exactly is a spine block injection? Will it work long-term for low back pain due to disc problems? What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

Use of stimulant decreases the symptoms to a much good effect and if we don't give stimulant medication There will be more of conduct disorder and progress in disease and for side effects we have to monitor the person and advice them accordingly And spine block injection is effective for six months

Hello, Thanks for the query. TSH 1.06 mU/L is a good level. At that there will be no symptoms of hypothyroidism. Hence, patient has to continue the same dose as being taken (75 mcg per day). Thanks.

This is piles. It is generally caused when we strain during bowel movement, it pushes the blood into the rectal veins and arteries. This causes swollen veins that push against the anal walls, resulting in weak and feeble anal muscles. Include lots of fibre in your diet to regulate bowel movement.

Thanks for the query. Thyroid hormone deficiencey called as hypothyroidism is is a well known problem leading to excess weight gain. To over come this one needs to star treatment with the hormone levothyroxine. Since you have complained about weight gain during last few months, it is essential for you to start treatment right away. Hence if interested come back with following details like T4, T3 & TSH values, weight and height and any other symptoms being felt. Based on those details I will be able to guide in controlling the condition and regaining your original weight. You will have to come in a private conversation so that I will be able to prescribe the drugs needed and to give other specific advise. In this communication only general guidelines can be given. Do not neglect as you are very young and not treating this condition can cause multiple problems including infertility. Thanks.

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, hashimoto's thyroiditis is ani autoimmune disorder, where our own immune cells produce antibodies against thyroid gland tthyroid peroxidase abs), which destroy the hormone secreting cells. One othe reasons is said to be excess intake of dietary iodine. Other reasons are presence of other autoimmune phenomena and certain infections which may trigger the condition. There is accumulation of lymphocytes in the gland, cell destruction leads to thyroxine deficiency. Thyroid gland may become firm, lobulated and enlarged. Anti tpo ab are detected in the serum. Giving thyroxine replacement is the treatment. Iodine is of no use once hashimoto's thyroiditis develops. This is the major cause of hypothyroidism in usa particularly in women. In some cases no nti bodies may be seen.

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a condition caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body inappropriately attacks the thyroid gland - as if it was foreign tissue. The underlying cause of the autoimmune process remains unknown. Hashimoto's thyroiditis tends to occur in families. It can be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes or celiac disease. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is 5 to 10 times more common in women than in men and most often starts in adulthood. Blood drawn from people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis typically reveals an increased number of antibodies against thyroid-specific proteins, including thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin. T- lymphocytes, a type of cell involved in the inflammation process, invade the thyroid gland cause silent, painless inflammation that destroys it; ultimately, the individual produces little or no thyroid hormone and becomes hypothyroid.----------------•The treatment of choice for Hashimoto's thyroiditis is typically synthetic T4 or thyroxine (levothyroxine) along with homoeopathic medicine THYROIDINUM- 3X (Schwabe Gernam) by chewing 2 tabs twice daily so as to keep the dosage of Levothyroxine under check. The medication must be taken indefinitely, and successful treatment alleviates the symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism. Without medication, there is very little chance the thyroid would be able to maintain hormone levels within the normal range, and symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism would occur or worsen. The dosage of levothyroxine may need to be modified after checking TSH levels once yearly. When iodine has been added to table salt, the rates of autoimmune thyroid disease have risen.---------------- This is because increased iodine intake, especially in supplement form, can increase the autoimmune attack on the thyroid. Iodine reduces the activity of an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase (TPO). TPO is required for proper thyroid hormone production.------------On the other hand, restricting intake of iodine can reverse hypothyroidism. In one study, 78% of patients with Hashimoto’s regained normal thyroid function with iodine restriction alone.------- It appears that iodine may only pose a problem for people with Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune thyroid diseases in the presence of concurrent selenium deficiency.------------------
