Have a migraine problem and when we had MRI scanning all was normal. Suggestions?

COMT, MPTh/MPT
Physiotherapist, Surat
MRI reports are normal that seems nothing serious. Headaches due to migraine is very common these days especially in young adults because of there lifestyle and working environment. Sometimes pain is very severe on one side of the head.  So I would recommend you to avoid stress and anxiety, quiet the mind from distractions. Stay calm positive and do deep breathing exercises, listen some music that would give you some relaxation. If pain is severe then place ice pack over forehead and lie down for some time to relax your mind and give you comfort and stress full life. Massage your head using levander oil or clove oil as it removes toxins from body. You can use mint or clove spray for inhaling in case of headache. If pain is severe you can also apply ginger paste over the painful area. Avoid taking caffeine, alcohol, phenylethylamine (found in chocolate and cheese), tyramine (found in nuts and fermented meats, cheeses, and soy), and aspartame (in many artificially sweetened foods) as sometimes these all exaggerate pain instead use basil leaves tea or ginger tea boiled nicely in water without milk. Regular intake of healthy dietry food rich in proteins and vitamins. Avoid fasting - Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at fixed timings. Make yourself busy by fulfilling your hobby as it will give you freshness and your mind will be diverted from normal life which help in pain reduction. Take min 7 hours of sleep. Make a habit of 20-25 min walking daily along with some meditations. If required then only take pain relieving tablets. For more help or instructions please consult. Good Luck and Get Well Soon.

I do understand your problem, being at the stage of achieving in your studies or career goals, really it is a difficult situation. But, you are not alone. Everybody has this problem in varying degrees. Only the intensity is more in your case. We call this performance anxiety. Fear of failure increases the anxiety furthermore that acts as a barrier to good performance. Nothing to worry. You can easily overcome this problem if you have a strong will to change and practice a few suggestions mentioned below. 1. Learn and practice the techniques kapalabhati and naadisuddhi from a good yoga teacher, which can reduce your physiological arousal such as heart palpitation, rapid breathing, uneasiness in the stomach, sweating, shivering etc. Whenever you face such fearful situations. 2. Also do santhiasana/savaasana 10 minutes everyday using an recorded voice instruction of your yoga teacher (i can upload mine if you contact through private question). This regular practice will soothen your nervous system and calms your mind down. 3. You can also practice mental rehearsal, sit with closed eyes and imagine that you are performing in a stage without fear, repeatedly. 4. One more techinique is graded exposure in which you can approach the feared situations in divided targets. For example, you can present your speach in front of a friend till you feel good, then present in front of a few people like your parents or other relatives till you feel easy. Then to a group of 10 people and so on. 5. Aqequate preparation is also an important component. Efforts never fail.

Know The Warning Signs of Brain Tumor!

MCh Neurosurgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Neurosurgeon, Guwahati
Know The Warning Signs of Brain Tumor!

There is no trustworthy evidence regarding what causes brain tumors, but there are a few risk factors that have been substantiated through research. Children and young people who receive radiation around the head are susceptible to developing tumors in the brain once they grow up. Also, people with a certain kind of rare genetic condition like neurofibromatosis may develop a brain tumor though such cases are very few in number. Age is also an important factor as people aged over 65 years are diagnosed with brain tumors at quadruple times higher than children and younger people.

Types of Brain Tumours:

A primary brain tumor originates in the brain, and they may or may not be cancerous. Some tumors can be benign, which do not spread in the surrounding tissues and are not very malicious. However, that does not signify that they will not cause any harm over time. Sometimes these tumors can be severe and cause a threat to the life of the sufferer. The National Cancer Institute reports that approximately there were 23, 380 fresh cases of brain tumors in 2014.

Identifying the Symptoms of Brain Tumors:

The symptoms of the brain tumor are dependent on various factors such as the size, type as well as the exact location of the tumor. These symptoms are triggered when any tumor is pressed or clashed against a nerve or disturbs a part of the brain. Symptoms are also felt when any tumor particle blocks the fluid flowing around the brain or when there is a swelling in the brain owing to the build-up of fluid.

Common symptoms include: headaches that get worse in the morning, nausea along with vomiting, an alteration in the speech, hearing and imbalances in walking and movement, mood swings, change in personality and ability to concentrate or remember things and seizures or convulsions.

Treatment for Brain Tumor:

Surgery is normally the most usual treatment for brain tumors, and the patient is given anesthesia, and the scalp is shaved before the surgery. Then, craniotomy is performed to open the skull, and the surgeon removes a bone piece out of the skull. Then the tumor is removed as much as possible. The bone is then restored back, and the incision on the scalp is closed. Sometimes surgery is not viable in case the tumor has developed in the brain stem or some other complex parts.

Neurosurgeons can surgically remove some tumors completely (called resection or complete removal). If the tumor is near sensitive areas of the brain, neurosurgeons will only be able to remove part of it (called partial removal). Even partial removals can relieve symptoms and facilitate or increase the effectiveness of other treatments.

The role of surgery in treating brain tumors:

Surgery can provide:

  • The complete removal of some brain tumors
  • A sample to enable doctors to diagnosis the tumor and recommend the most appropriate treatment
  • Better quality of life:
    • Reduced symptoms and improved ability to function (e.g., to think, speak or see better)
    • Less pressure within the skull from the tumor
    • A longer life

In case you or any of your near ones is affected with brain tumor, you should visit the doctor to know the possible treatments other than surgery and other important questions related to brain tumor.

I am 71 yrs 5ft 8 in weight 90 kg am suffering from diabetic for last 5 yrs lately I find that sole of both my feet become numb when I get up in the morning and also my right heel is very painful please advice what I should do ?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Your symptoms of numbness could be due to long standing diabetes in your case although other causes cannot be ruled out especially issues in lower back region. I would advise you for a very strict sugar control, you can take medications like pregabalin or gabapentin in low doses initially, take vitamin b12 and adequate calcium and vitamin d supplementation. Also heel pain could be due to inflammation in your heel fascia. Treatment modalities are aimed at relieving inflammation of the fascia, like ice packs, physical therapy, footwear modification and anti-inflammatory therapy. I will observe you with this management for around 2 weeks and then we will see if we require any investigations in your case. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Neurologist,
Parkinson's disease-KAMPAVATA
(A Neurological Disorder)
Parkinson's disease is a neurological disease, or brain disorder, that leads to progressive difficulty with balance and coordination. In people who have Parkinson's disease, nerve cells in a region of the brain known as the substantia nigra become damaged or die. These cells are important because they produce the chemical dopamine, which helps to coordinate body movement-basal ganglia.
When dopamine-producing cells degenerate/die, the areas in the brain that control movement can no longer function properly, and symptoms of Parkinson's disease eventually develop.
Parkinson?s Disease Prevalence:-
Parkinson's disease can affect anyone, but it most often occurs in people who are over the age of 50. Only 15 percent of Parkinson's disease patients are diagnosed before they are 50 years old.
The prevalence of Parkinson's disease is nearly the same in both men and women, and recovery rate is more in men. People with a family history of Parkinson's may have a higher risk of developing the disease, but Parkinson's disease is rarely attributed to genetics alone.
Parkinson's Disease Symptoms
Symptoms of Parkinson's disease usually develop after about 80 percent of the brain's dopamine-producing cells are lost. The Main symptoms of Parkinson's disease include:
? Tremors(Kampam)- Tremulousness (uncontrolled shaking or trembling) of the hands, arms, legs, face, body is often one of the first indicators of Parkinson's disease.
? Rigidity. Profound stiffness or an inability to easily move the arms, legs, and trunk, pain and stiffness on neck muscles is another hallmark of Parkinson's.
? Bradykinesia:- describes the unnaturally slow movements that are characteristic of people with Parkinson's disease.
? Poor balance- Parkinson's disease affects balance, leading to difficulty walking and impaired coordination.
The symptoms of Parkinson's are generally mild at first, but become more severe over time, until they eventually interfere with your daily routine. This is usually the point when treatment is recommended.
The Outlook for People with Parkinson's disease
Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive condition, which means it is a lifelong disease that worsens over time when it is not treated properly.
Each individual's situation is different, but in general, the first symptoms of Parkinson's disease usually don't require treatment and may be restricted to one area or one side of the body.
Movement of symptoms to the other side of the body
? Tremors that become more pronounced and interfere with activities
? Bradykinesia, or slow movement, that becomes disabling
? Difficulty with hand writing
? Impaired swallowing and chewing
? Speech that becomes monotone
? Poor balance and repeated falls
? Slow, shuffling gait (manner of walking)
? Stooped posture
? Facial expressions that become stiff and blank
? Chronic constipation
? Poor bladder control
? Sleep disturbances
This progression is gradual in most people, but it may happen faster in some than others. Understandably, stress caused by the progression of the disease can lead to anxiety and depression.

Ayurveda Treatment:

There is cure for Parkinson's disease with Ayurveda treatment, With Ayurveda medicines and treatments we can relieve symptoms, slow down the progression and then we can completely arrest further degeneration of the of the cells, thereby we can completely control and cure the disease. If you are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, it is important to work closely with your medical team, so your medications can be regularly adjusted to help you remain as functional as possible for as long as possible.
As far as Parkinson's disease is concerned this is a brain related issue, so will surely effect the mind; so I recommend 49% treatment to patients and 51% treatment to family members.
