Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with" effective learning" techniques. Take care.

I am SRINIVAS I have smoking habit so many times I ignore that habit but I didn't stop so please tell me some tips.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You have to try and try again and again until you succeed. It helps to change tact each time to introduce something different. You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact, these conditions can exist all through the day, unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heartbeat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact, it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chew gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i. E. At least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. You could also join twitter2quit program and enjoy its success to give up smoking.

How to cope up from depression and obsessive compulsive disorder, constant thinking n lack of focus and concentration.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
How to cope up from depression and obsessive compulsive disorder, constant thinking n lack of focus and concentration.
Being depressed can make you feel helpless. But Along with therapy and sometimes medication, there's a lot you can do on your own to fight back. Changing your behaviour – your physical work, lifestyle, and even your way of thinking -- are all natural depression treatments .these tips can help you feel better -- starting right now. 1. Get in a routine. If you’re depressed, you need a routine depression can strip away the structure from your life. One day melts into the next. Setting a gentle daily schedule can help you get back on track. 2. When you're depressed, you may feel like you can't accomplish anything. That makes you feel worse about yourself. To push back, set daily goals for yourself. "Start very small,” "Make your goal something that you can succeed at, like doing the dishes every other day." As you start to feel better, you can add more challenging daily goals. 3. Exercise- It temporarily boosts feel-good chemicals called endorphins. It may also have long-term benefits for people. Regular exercise seems to encourage the brain to rewire itself in positive ways. How much exercise do you need? You don’t need to run marathons to get a benefit. Just walking a few times a week can help. 4. Eat healthy. There is no magic / special; diet that corrects depression. It's a good idea to watch what you eat, though. If depression tends to make you overeat, getting in control of your eating will help you feel better. Although nothing is definitive, there’s evidence that foods with omega-3 fatty acids (such as fish) and folic acid (such as spinach) could help ease depression. 5. Get enough sleep. Depression can make it hard to get enough sleep and can make depression worse. What can you do? Start by making some changes to your lifestyle. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try not to nap. Take all the distractions out of your bedroom -- no computer and no TV. In time, you may find your sleep improves. 6. Take on responsibilities. When you’re depressed, you may want to pull back from life and give up your responsibilities at home and at work. Staying involved and having daily responsibilities can work as a natural depression treatment. They ground you and give you a sense of accomplishment. If you're not up to full-time school or work, that’s fine. Think about part-time. If that seems like too much, consider volunteer work. 7. Challenge negative thoughts. In your fight against depression, a lot of the work is mental -- changing how you think. When you're depressed, you leap to the worst possible conclusions. You might feel like no one likes you, but is there real evidence for that? You might feel like the most worthless person on the planet, but is that really likely? It takes practice, but in time you can beat back those negative thoughts before they get out of control. 8. Check with your doctor before using supplements. "There's promising evidence for certain supplements for depression," Those include fish oil, folic acid. Always check with your doctor before starting any supplement, especially if you’re already taking medications 9. Do something new. When you’re depressed, you’re in a rut. Push yourself to do something different. Go to a museum. Pick up a used book and read it on a park bench. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Take a language class. "When we challenge ourselves to do something different, there are chemical changes in the brain, "Trying something new alters the levels of [the brain chemical] dopamine, which is associated with pleasure, enjoyment, and learning." 10. Try to have fun. If you’re depressed, make time for things you enjoy. What if nothing seems fun anymore? "That's just a symptom of depression," You have to keep trying anyway. As strange as it might sound, you have to work at having fun. Plan things you used to enjoy, even if they feel like a chore. Keep going to the movies. Keep going out with friends for dinner. When you're depressed, you can lose the knack for enjoying life, you have to relearn how to do it. In time, fun things really will feel fun again.

Hello I am 26 year ,male, unmarried, non smoker and non alcoholic I have problem of getting blank during exam. My mind is getting slow. Please help me. This is serious problem for me. Thankyou.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I don't know for how long you have ben having this problem, and if you are still studying I must assume you are doing some professional course. So, if it is of recent origin, you can easily locate the why this problem began: it will have to do with some fear related event. If it is or past origins, then you should meet with a counselor and sort out the unresolved childhood experience, again having a lot to do with fear. This fear, for some unknown reason, is causing you to react in panic. It is apparently so frightful that you shut down your senses and go blank. It may not at all be of any serious consequence but you are reacting like it is one. A good education on emotions and how to deal with them will go a long way to come out of this adaptation. In the meantime, good aerobic exercise, proper sleep, healthy diet, and stress-free lifestyle will help you deal with these developments with strength.

Hello, I would like to know how to increase concentration and memory power for easy learning.

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

I have a problem with stress please help yi reduce stress. I am facing this issue from very long.

Psychiatrist, Delhi
I have a problem with stress please help yi reduce stress. I am facing this issue from very long.
STRESS MANAGEMENT Introduction: What is stress? Everybody has it, everybody talks about it, yet few people have taken the trouble to find out what stress really is. Many words have become fashionable when scientific research revealed a new concept likely to influence our way of thinking about major issues of life or to affect our everybody conduct. The word stress like ‘Success’ ‘Failure’ or ‘Happiness’ means different things to different people so that defining it is extremely difficult although it has become part of our daily vocabulary. It is effect, fatigue, pain, fear the need for concentration, the humiliation of censure, the loss of blood, or even an unexpected great success which requires complete reformulation of one’s entire life. The answer is yes and no. This is what makes the definition of stress so difficult. Every can be singled out as being ‘it’ since the word applies equally to all the others. In ordinary language coping is used to mainly the outcome of managing a problem and overlooks the intermediate process of appraisal, performance, and correction that most problem solving entails. Coping is not a simple judgment about how some difficulty worked out. It is an extensive, recursive process of self-exploration, self- instruction, self- correction, self-rehearsal and guidance gathered from outside sources. Definitions:- Stress: Hans Selye – Defined stress as the sum of all the non-specific responses of an organism to noxious stimuli. A physical, chemical or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension & may be a factor in disease causation. One of bodily or mental tension resulting from factors that tend to alter existent equilibrium. Concept of stress: The term stress first applied to events or situations such as working for an examination, that may have an adverse effects on someone. Second it is applied to the adverse effects that are induced, which may be psychological or physiological changed. The first set of factors can usefully be called stressors. They include a large number of physics, psychological and social factors in the environment that can produce adverse effects. The term is sometimes extended to include events that are not experienced as adverse at the time but may still have adverse long-term effects. The effect on the person can useful is called the stress reaction to distinguish it from the provoking events. This reaction includes autonomic response (increase in B. P.). Endocrine changes (Secretion of Adr. & nor Adr) and psychological response (Such as a feeling of being keyed up). To explain the body reaction to the stress one scientist (SELYE) formulated the General adaptation syndrome. The body goes through three stage in damaging situations. Stage I Alarm reaction. Stage II Stage of resistance. Stage III Stage of exhaustion. These three stages are analogous to the three stages of man’s life. I. Childhood. II. Adulthood. III. Senility. Stress and Emotion: The relationship between stress and emotion is important, for they are concepts that overlap. Emotions tell more about what is important to people and how they view their daily lives than can any test measuring stress reaction. Both emotions and stress are better thoughts of an processes than as static states. Sources of Stress: 1. Major life events. 2. Natural and technological disaster. 3. Minor life events. 4. Social changes. 5. Occupational changes. 6. Unemployment 7. Stress produced by the individual. Coping: Definitions: Laxarus (1966) when we use the term coping we are referring to strategies for dealing with threat. Lipowski (1970) All cognitive and motor activities which a sick person employ to reserve his bodily and psychic integrity to recover reversibility impaired function and compensate to the limit for any irreversible impairment. Lazarus & Folk (1984) They define coping as constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and or internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of the person. Mechanism of coping: Coping mechanisms have two components Internal events and observable behavior. After bereavement a person’s coping mechanisms might be first, a return to former religious belief (an internal mechanism) and second joining a social club to combat loneliness (an observable behavior). Functions of Coping: Three major function of coping are: 1) To change the situation for the better life we can either by changing ones own offending action (focus on self) or by changing the damaging or threatening environment. 2) To Manage the somatic and subjective components of stress related emotions themselves, so that they do not get out of hand and do not damage or destroy morale and social functioning. 3) Alteration of (perceptually controlling) the meaning of experience so as to neutralize the problematic character. The three functions of coping are also referred to respectively by the terms A) problem – focused or instrumental coping b) appraisal focused coping c) Emotion focused or palliative coping. The latter two functions are sometimes paired and referred to as palliative functions. Problems focused forms of coping are more apt to be employed when circumstance are viewed as changeable, where as appraisal focused and emotion focused coping occur more often in the context of situation deemed un-control-able. Other terms used regarding coping are: A) Coping styles B) Coping strategies. Research on coping falls into two areas i. E. On coping style and coping strategies. Interest in the latter area has been increasing rapidly in the last decade for a number of reasons. It some studies have revealed that knowledge of the individual characteristics coping style is not always useful in predicting how he or she will respond in novel situation. Second researchers have also found that any given coping strategy or those characteristic of a person’s coping style can have both –ive and +ive as well as short term and long term consequences. Thus labeling an individual style as uniformly maladaptive or ineffectual may not be appropriate or accurate. Third it may be easier to alter characteristics of a person’s coping repertoire than to change the person’s response style. Determinants of coping. Evaluating the Efficacy of coping. There are two types of copers: a. Good copers may be regarded as individuals with a special skill or with personal traits that enable them to master many difficulties. On the other hand there are two groups of patients who are bad copers. One group adamantly denies any difficulty of any description. The second group floods the interview with details of how badly the world and its occupants have treated them. Both good and bad copes have specific traits. Coping is after all, a skill that is useful in a variety of situations, although many modifications of basic principles are called for. Confidence in being able to cope can only be enhanced through self – appraisal, self – instruction, and self-correction over and over. Coping well with illness – with any problem – does not predict invariable success, but it does provide a foundation for becoming a better coper. Stress Management: Steps involved 1) The level of the stressor can be reduced. 2) Techniques to bolster health can be provided. 3) Impact of stressors on health can be suffered. 1) Social support 2) Coping strategies (Raymond Flannery) A) Personal control B) Possess task involvement C) Good habits D) Utilize social support. 3) Short therapeutic intervention (Mardi Horowitz) Read this article then replay.
