Hello. I am 23 year old engineering final year student. I have problem of concentration I think my concentration is nearly 10%. I used to have good memory power but nowadays I always forget important work or thing to do. I always try to avoid anything that needs some thinking. Also I am addicted to nail biting, lips biting, cheek muscles biting and injuring my mouth. I also have masturbation habit of daily 1 to 2 times. I am unable to control it. I don't like anything whether it's visiting new places talking to someone. I keep myself alone. Also due to this week mental power I didn't get any job test cleared. Day by day it's getting worse. I tried to meditate a lot but my mind gets diverted to any incident of past or future. Please help me to get out of this.

Dear lybrate-user, You might be genetically prone to get a psychiatric disorder. Probably that was precipitated by 'joint' What you are suffering now, are due to the original disorder - NOT withdrawal of ganja. This psychiatric disorder if treated properly, you will do your job like before. Your brain is NOT damaged due to ganja. But it is altered due to a treatable psychiatric disorder. Please consult a psychiatrist. She/he will diagnose you properly and treat you. Sometime the treatment may go on for months though the brain is NOT damaged permanently. All the best.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. The duty of your mind is to think. The mind will continue thinking unless you provide it some creative task. If you don't give, it will wander into negative areas. As you are unable to pinpoint the reason behind your obsessive thinking, it has to be in your unconscious mind. I suggest online psychoanalysis and counselling. Take care.

Your weight is controlled by 4 major factors (1) refined sugar consumption (2) exercise and hydration (3) posture and sitting (4) how many times do you indulge yourself - alcohol, binge eating at parties, overeating etc. Step 01: refined sugar 1. Avoid all snacks and commercial products with sugar in them - biscuits, cakes, bournvita, horlicks, coke, pepsi, energy drinks, sweetened yogurt etc. 2. Cut down on your daily intake of tea/coffee and maintain it at 3-4 cups a day. 3. Try to add little sugar to any beverage (coffee, tea, milk, lemon water etc.) that you have and ideally you should refrain from adding any sugar altogether. Step 02: get exercise and proper hydration 1. Try to work out for 20 minutes each day. You do not necessarily have to go to the gym. You can incorporate some pretty powerful exercises in your daily routine like - squats, skipping, surya namaskar and core exercises. 2. Drink 8-10 glasses of water everyday but remember that tea/coffee are not substitutes for pure water. Step 03: improve posture and sitting habits if you have a sitting job then ensure that you do not sit for more than 30 minutes at one stretch. Get up and move a little after every 30 minutes. Step 04: stop indulging and eat more of raw natural stuff 1. No more than 60 ml of hard liqour or 2 glasses of beer per day. 2. Try to eliminate the urge to overeat but if you do overeat try to limit the incidents to two times per week. 3. Eat 4 servings of fruits per day. 4. Each of your meal should contain 50% of raw vegetables. Once you incorporate the above points in your routine you will see a dramatic difference in your weight, physical shape and energy levels. You will find that there are a lot of companies out there that are trying to sell expensive products to naive consumers in the name of weight loss. These products may not necessarily be good for you. Losing and maintaining weight is something which is totally in your hands, it is easy and it is free of cost if you follow the above mentioned points.

Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with" effective learning" techniques. Take care.

Hi my father is having tobacco every day . how to stop this habitat please Tell this

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
What is the age of your father? how long as he been using tobacco? is he smoking tobacco or consuming it? these pieces of information will help. Any way, he cannot stop easily, if he himself does not want to. It must ideally come from his own desire to stop. You can force him to stop by admitting him in a rehabilitation center, if they also do not allow smoking (unfortunately many centers dole out daily quota of cigarettes). If you admit him in one of the naturopathy institutes, he will have to abstain from the consumption and that will help him to quit. Do not take him out for at least one month or more. When he comes back keep him under vigil and monitor him so that neither he nor other domestic staff will pick cigarettes for him. He may experience a spurt in eating or drinking juices etc. Let him indulge in those foods for some time, only. Put him on an exercise program, and have a thorough medical check up to identify any other damage to his system. If he is unwilling to visit a counselor, get one to come home and talk to him. He can be coaxed to maintain his abstinence under the guidance of a counselor. Make him do meditation; make him stick to a regular schedule of activities, have him involved in interesting and responsible activities. Educate him about all the harmful effects of tobacco smoke and the damage it brings others in the house who smoke both the side-stream smoke and the second-hand smoke. Acupuncture is excellent treatment too.

I get anxious, panic attacks and my right hand shivers a lot due to anxiousness. What should i do?

I get anxious, panic attacks and my right hand shivers a lot due to anxiousness. What should i do?
A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear that triggers severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or apparent cause. Panic attacks can be very frightening. When panic attacks occur, you might think you're losing control, having a heart attack or even dying. Many people have just one or two panic attacks in their lifetimes, and the problem goes away, perhaps when a stressful situation ends. But if you've had recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and spent long periods in constant fear of another attack, you may have a condition called panic disorder. Panic attack can come in agoraphobia, when there is fear of places where there is no exit, in crowds, locked places, travelling far from home….etc. Although panic attacks themselves aren't life-threatening, they can be frightening and significantly affect your quality of life. But treatment can be very effective. Consult a Psychiatrist and get remedy. All the best for you.

There is no reason good enough to contemplate death. Life has a lot of problems and we must learnt to deal with it by being disciplined. Life is extremely precious and must be preserved at all cost: you have only one chance in this world and hopelessness will haunt but you can overcome all this with some help and other people. Sounds to me like you are into an anger related depression. If you have not been on medication and you want to remain so, you will have to work very hard to recover from this condition. You must first of all seek the help of a counselor, ideally. If that person thinks that you need to meet with a doctor you will need to do so and cooperate right through. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good nights sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Dont wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back, if you are not already married. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

I get angry very easily. I beat my colleagues in my company when I get angry. Please suggest some solutions.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
There is something seriously wrong if you can lose control to this extent. Kindly meet with a counselor along with your parents and see what they identify. This amount of loss of control indicates that there was something that happened early in your life that has not been sorted. Sometimes you may be angry because you are scared: fear is a weakening feelings whereas anger supplies power. so people sometimes chose to be angry when they are scared. I hope you are doing good physical workout to expend the energy of anger and that will help you deal with the anger without the energy.

There are limitations in treatment of trichotillomania. However some treatment options have helped many people reduce their hair pulling or stop entirely.--------------------------- Habit reversal training is the primary psychotherapy for trichotillomania. This type of therapy helps you learn how to recognize situations where you're likely to pull hair and how to substitute other behaviors instead. For example, you might clench your fists for a period to" freeze" the urge, or redirect your hand from your hair to your ear. Sometimes elements of other therapies may be blended with habit reversal training, including: •Cognitive therapy. This therapy can help you challenge and examine distorted beliefs you may have in relation to hair pulling. •Acceptance and commitment therapy. This therapy can help you learn to accept your hair-pulling urges without acting on them •Homoeopathic treatment Trichotillomania being a behavioural disorder can be fully treated with homoeopathic medicines but for that a complete case taking is required regarding your problem since childhood as although all patients suffering from Trichotillomania, reason is behavioural problems but no two people will have the same history of complaints and to isolate everyone, a thorough study of history of complaints, nature of patient, environmental factors, will come into play while taking history of your problem.

I am having the problem of drinking but after many try I cannot able to leave it so tell me some suitable outputs.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Alcohol dependence involves intense craving or desire to drink alcohol. People drink for pleasure or rationalize it on external factors like family problems, work tension, etc. They drink continuously, i.e. Almost daily or even weekly once or twice with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, bodily damage, etc. You need to consult a psychiatrist and go for 3 steps of de addiction. 1st is detoxification, when alcohol is stopped and the withdrawal is made smooth with minimal discomfort, 2 nd is maintenance and further deaddiction when the physical problems and psychological state of the individual is maintained and anti-craving drugs started 3 rd rehabilitation, when relapse prevention is the goal, while maintaining deaddiction. All the best.

Dear lybrate-user. That is a great achievement. Body starts its repair process the moment you stop smoking and drinking. Just leave it to the body. Physical exercise is a must. Have nutritious diet with plenty of water and fruits. It should take around 12 months for the body to completely repair itself. Take care.
