Dear Lybrate user There is no SIMPLE way to cure stress and depression. First of all, Depression is a medical illness which requires thorough investigation and understanding so that underlying cause can be treated. For stress, ideally stress management is the trick. This entails, understanding the source of your stress, identifying it, accepting it and working on methods to cope with it. I would recommend a stress management direction for you. You can begin by modifying your lifestyle (kicking any bad habits) and adopting healthy ones. This is a slow and life long process. And will not CURE stress. Instead just help cope with it.

Yes most certainly. Please continue as prescribed. These medicines should never be discontinued without a thorough examination and investigation by a psychiatrist who has been regularly seeing you in person. Further, these medicines will be tapered down slowly and then stopped. (if the doctor thinks it's okay to stop in the first place). Please be patient.

Very good question. Please identify your target first. Are you looking to maintain, loose or gain weight. Once you identify your target, try to eat often (ever 3-4 hours, small meals) rather than huge meals for 2-3 times in a day. For a working person, the idea is - MEAL PLANNING. Which means on a holiday you can prepare few small boxes of easy to carry food items. E.g.- nuts, fruits, snacks like sprouts etc. One can do this planning for atleast next 2-3 days and then again repeat. You must also take in consideration your requisite of energy according to age, height, type of work etc. Best advice would be to consult a dietician one on one and chart out a diet best suited for you.

Yes. Vehophobia (Fear of driving) is fairly common. It is worthwhile to begin with therapy in a graded manner to help explore the problem further.

Madam, eventhough you may be better as of now, relapse of depression can occur. The medicines help maintain the neurotransmitter balance in the brain. If your history of depression is long, it is advisable to keep meeting your psychiatrist regularly and continue medicine as per instructions. Feeling right now and having a worse episode later may be catastrophic. Its just like immunisation. You can choose not to get vaccine of a certain illness by avoiding the injection but later the consequences are severe.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB (Psychiatry)

Take a deep breath. Exams are a part and parcel of life. Don't focus on the outcome, focus on now. Sit up and study, don't study in bed. Take breaks. Talk to someone. Avoid keeping up all night. Eat well. Rest.

I heard drinking alcohol after meals doesn't effects sex life further is it true. please suggest me how to drink without getting effected further.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB (Psychiatry)
Psychiatrist, Kolkata
This is a myth. Alcohol can cause a whole variety of physical, social and psychological problems. Sexual dysfunction is one of them, along with liver damage, sleep problems etc. There is no right way of drinking alcohol. If you can be abstinent it will be the best. Social drinking can not be encouraged by a doctor too. As most people are unable to control themselves after the first drink. If you are drinking heavily or regularly, I strongly urge you to seek help from a psychiatrist.

Sir I am drinking alcohol one or two times in one month is there any. Problem to my health.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB (Psychiatry)
Psychiatrist, Kolkata
Certainly alcohol has many ill effects. To begin with, it is habit forming and one can easily become dependant on it. It can cause memory problems, liver damage, accidents, passing out (black outs) and not to forget, social as well as monetary problems. Try and curtail your intake or even quit altogether. It is better to stay away from vices.

No to both situations. Virus dies the moment it comes in contact with the air. It can only spread by: 1. Sexual contact involving exchange of fluids 2. Mother to baby (not always) - via breast milk 3. Blood transfusion of hiv positive person.

Quit Smoking

Quit Smoking
Will power is the key to quit smoking.
Chewing an elaichi (cardamom) or laung (clove) when you are craving always helps.
Also there are many nicotine replacement methods in the market (not only chewing gum). All these should be used under supervision of the doctor.

I smoke over 40 Cigarettes per day and have been an alcoholic for almost two years now. How damaged are my lungs and liver at the present moment?

Sir, there is no way of exactly pinpointing the degree of damage without a few tests, both physical and psychological. Not only lungs an liver, but even the brain is affected by regular heavy use of cigarettes and alcohol. I recommend that if you are planning to quit, you seek help and quit in a graded manner.

How much time it takes to treat Parkinson. My mom is suffering from it, her hands shakes a lil. She is under treatment by a neurosurgeon.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB (Psychiatry)
Psychiatrist, Kolkata
Sadly parkinson's disease can not be treated. The symptoms surely can be controlled. There is a vast difference between full treatment and getting rid of the disease, as compared to being functional and being able to take control of life. I suppose if you have just started medications, it may take some time to titrate the dosages, but surely the medicines help.

Does flavored hookah effects our heath? And e-hookah is good or also is bad for health? If we do hookah 2 time in 10 days then hw much it is effected?

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB (Psychiatry)
Psychiatrist, Kolkata
Yes. Hookah is more injurious than cigarettes. E-hookah maybe less injurious but is not devoid of side-effects. The flavours may not contain tobacco but has traces of it. Also inhaling smoke is certainly bad.

This happens to everyone. It is due to the build up of lactic acid. If you don't go to gym for 2-3 days, during that time too, you must do basic stretching exercises at home. Also take ample fluids and rest.

Overeating may be an underlying symptom. This needs to be looked into in detail. Certain people over eat in emotionally testing times, stress, while others do so chronically. It is essential that you understand that limiting portions may make you hungry again and again, but there is no harm in eating smaller meals at regular intervals. Infact its better. Your weight and height point out that you are quite underweight and the bmi ratio is about 14.3, which is quite low. I would recommend a thyroid function test for you, if despite eating big meals, you aren't putting on weight. Detailed examination is a must for you.

I m not getting my complete sleep what to do in this conditions and unable to concentrate on my studies.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB (Psychiatry)
Psychiatrist, Kolkata
I m not getting my complete sleep what to do in this conditions and unable to concentrate on my studies.
Sleep is very essential for all. Lack of which can lead to impaired concentration. I suggest you indulge in some heavy physical activity during the day - e. G. Walk or exercise. Don't have heavy meals at night. Avoid coffee, tea after sunset. Donot take naps during the day. Make a schedule for studying. Donot use mobiles in bed. Keep them out of reach. The light from smartphones keeps our body clock away. If all these fail, you may need to see a psychiatrist.
