I lost somebody close last year and since then feel very depressed and prefer keeping to myself all the time. Please ...
It is natural to feel low and miss the person you have lost. However if it is interfering with your sleep, studies or general well being, or if you feel suicidal, you need to consult a psychiatrist. It is common to feel low, cry, feel like you are alone, or lose your self confidence. Usually time is the best healer. However if things are too difficult to handle you should talk to a psychiatrist or counselor. Confide in someone close to you, who will support you in this difficult time. Don't cut off from friends or family, even if you feel like you want to be alone.

Sir, negative thought is necessary or not for a person. And I also want to know that everyone says that over thinking is bad. But if a person not overthink in PHYSICS then his solution shall not be correct. Then why always it is said that to not overthink on any subject.

Hi, Thanks for writing in, welcome to the forum. Considering the possibility of a negative outcome is useful in altering one's strategy and dealing better with adversities. However, there must be a sense of balance and proportion to all of these. It is not so much the amount of thought itself that indicates abnormality, but the quantum of maladaptive thoughts. Excessive amount of thoughts that are maladaptive and seemingly do not serve a purpose may be undesirable. In case of physics, it is the useful and adaptive thoughts that you are talking about. If you have a more specific problem that you are facing, do not hesitate to contact. Take care!

Sometimes I lost my sleep sometimes I sleep a lot. I even didn't get any sexual feelings and erection. I have mild pain in my legs and below stomach at right side. Sometimes I cry for no reason. I feel low energy in doing normal daily things. (I am feeling all this from past 6 months or even more.) Is this normal? Should I ignore this?

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

Schizophrenia is unfortunately a chronic illness that can only be kept under control by medication. By your description it sounds as if your mother has started relapsing again because the medicines have been stopped. Please consult a psychiatrist at the earliest so that she can be restarted on the right medicines. Also it would be good to educate yourself on the illness so that you can monitor her treatment. Very often if treatment is stopped for a long time the same medication becomes less effective. Regular follow up is very important.

You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Ayurvedic View on Alcohol and Nicotine De-addiction

Ayurvedic View on Alcohol and Nicotine De-addiction

What happens when you are addicted to a chemical substance? You lose control of your life. It doesn’t matter what you are addicted to alcohol, nicotine or drugs the effects are the same. It is usually not easy to get rid of an alcohol and/or nicotine addiction. Most people find it difficult to give up these substances even after years in de-addiction therapy. Hence, it’s prudent to let Ayurveda, the ancient science of healing handhold us in getting rid of addictions.

Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. These cigarette ingredients include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT. Perhaps this list of ingredients that are found in cigarettes is enough to make you want to quit smoking for good! - Lowell Kleinman, M.D., and Deborah Messina-Kleinman, M.P.H

Addiction - The Ayurvedic View
Ayurveda considers alcohol and nicotine consumed in large quantities as ‘Visha’ or toxic. According to Ayurveda, alcohol has the following properties-

  1. Light or Laghu
  2. Hot or Ushna
  3. Sharp or Tikshna
  4. Drying or Visada
  5. Rough or Ruksha
  6. Expensive or Vikaasa
  7. Swift or Aasuga
  8. Sour or Amla
  9. Subtle or Sookshma

These properties are all opposite to the qualities that ojas possesses. Ojas has all life-giving properties and alcohol and nicotine have life-negating qualities.

Why do humans get addicted to alcohol and nicotine?
Human brain produces Dopamine normally and what alcohol does is to activate the nervous system to promote dopamine formation. The brain thus remembers the taste of alcohol and nicotine by creating special cells called receptor cells. As a person increases the quantity of alcohol, these cells also increase in numbers. When the person wants to give up his addictions these receptor cells agitate and create withdrawal symptoms with unpleasant and even dangerous symptoms.

De-addiction - Ayurveda Way
De-addiction treatments in Ayurveda comprise the following:

  1. Purification therapies or Panchkarma: These are used for getting rid of all toxins present in the patient’s body. These must always be done under the supervision of an ayurvedacharya as they are quite potent. After Panchakarma, the patient is given vomiting therapy or Vamana, followed by purgative therapy or Virechana, Basti or enema therapy and administration of Nasya or nasal drops therapy. All these help in detoxifying the body and mind and prepare the patient for further de-addiction ayurvedic treatments like Rasayana therapies which nourish and strengthen the body after Panchkarma. For treatment of addictions, Rasayana treatments include changes in diet and use of oral herbal medicines both.
  2. Herbal medicines used in de-addiction: A range of herbal medicines and their combinations are used in the treatment of addictive problems in Ayurveda and these are to be consumed orally. Ayurveda prescribes Chamomile and Ashwagandha in combination to heal the lungs. These help in cleansing lungs of smoke- related problems. Doctors also prescribe congestion relieving herbs like ginger and pepper mixed with honey or lemon.

In addition, herbs to improve memory, concentration and to fight depression are also given. These are:

  1. Shankhpushpi
  2. Kanphool or dandelion
  3. Brahmi
  4. Ashwagandha

In addition, herbs to treat sleep disturbances like Jatamansi, Sarpgandha, Brahmi and Jaiphal are also prescribed. Since most addicts have impaired liver function, herbs that improve liver function like Aloe Vera, Punarnava, Long pepper, Kutki, Tulsi are given to revive the liver.

I feel depression. Feel shaking my hands and body. Feel stress. Feel tired .can't have a good sleep .memory loss.

MD Psychiatry, MBBS

I feel depression. Feel shaking my hands and body. Feel stress. Feel tired .can't have a good sleep .memory loss.
Dear Mr. lybrate-user, Feeling tired, stressed and difficulty sleeping are definitely symptoms of depression. It can also lead to shaking of hands due to anxiety. Memory loss is often perceived in depression due to our inability to concentrate. However it would be better to get yourself evaluated by a psychiatrist in order to reach a definitive diagnosis. Depression is a treatable disorder. With adequate treatment in form of medications and psychotherapy, you will start feeling better and recover from your symptoms. In addition start exercising daily. Initiate the treatment as early as possible to ensure better response. I do hope you recover soon. Best wishes.
