Raising a child with dyslexia can stir up a lot of emotions. You may look ahead and wonder if this learning issue will affect your child's future. But dyslexia is not a prediction of failure. Dyslexia is quite common, and many successful individuals have dyslexia.

Research has proven that there are different ways of teaching that can help people with dyslexia succeed. There's a lot you can do as a parent too.


 

What are the symptoms of dyslexia?

Because dyslexia affects some people more severely than others, your child's symptoms may look different from those in another child. Some kids with dyslexia have trouble with reading and spelling. Others may struggle to write or to tell left from right.

Dyslexia can also make it difficult for people to express themselves clearly. It can be hard for them to structure their thoughts during conversation. They may have trouble finding the right words to say.

Others struggle to understand what they're hearing. This is especially true when someone uses nonliteral language such as jokes and sarcasm.

The signs you see may also look different at various ages. Some of the warning signs for dyslexia, such as a speech delay, appear before a child reaches kindergarten. More often, though, dyslexia is identified in grade school. As schoolwork gets more demanding, trouble processing language becomes more apparent.


 

Here are some signs to look out for:

  1. Warning Signs in Preschool or Kindergarten

  2. Has trouble recognizing the letters of the alphabet

  3. Struggles to match letters to sounds, such as not knowing what sounds b or h make

  4. Has difficulty blending sounds into words, such as connecting C-H-A-T to the word chat

  5. Struggles to pronounce words correctly, such as saying 'mawn lower' instead of 'lawn mower'

  6. Has difficulty learning new words

  7. Has a smaller vocabulary than other kids the same age

  8. Has trouble learning to count or say the days of the week and other common word sequences

  9. Has trouble rhyming


 

Warning Signs in Grade School or Middle School

  1. Struggles with reading and spelling

  2. Confuses the order of letters, such as writing 'left' instead of 'felt'

  3. Has trouble remembering facts and numbers

  4. Has difficulty gripping a pencil

  5. Has difficulty using proper grammar

  6. Has trouble learning new skills and relies heavily on memorization

  7. Gets tripped up by word problems in math

  8. Has a tough time sounding out unfamiliar words

  9. Has trouble following a sequence of directions


 

Warning Signs in High School

  1. Struggles with reading out loud

  2. Doesn't read at the expected grade level

  3. Has trouble understanding jokes or idioms

  4. Has difficulty organizing and managing time

  5. Struggles to summarize a story

Skills that are affected by Dyslexia:

Dyslexia doesn't just affect reading and writing. Here are some everyday skills and activities your child may be struggling with because of this learning issue:


 

General:

  1. Appears bright, highly intelligent, and articulate but unable to read, write, or spell at grade level.

  2. Labelled lazy, dumb, careless, immature, "not trying hard enough," or "behavior problem."

  3. Isn't "behind enough" or "bad enough" to be helped in the school setting.

  4. High in IQ, yet may not test well academically; tests well orally, but not written.

  5. Feels dumb; has poor self-esteem; hides or covers up weaknesses with ingenious compensatory strategies; easily frustrated and emotional about school reading or testing.

  6. Talented in art, drama, music, sports, mechanics, story-telling, sales, business, designing, building, or engineering.

  7. Seems to "Zone out" or daydream often; gets lost easily or loses track of time.

  8. Difficulty sustaining attention; seems "hyper" or "daydreamer."

  9. Learns best through hands-on experience, demonstrations, experimentation, observation, and visual aids.


 

Vision, Reading, and Spelling Skills:

  1. Complains of dizziness, headaches or stomach aches while reading.

  2. Confused by letters, numbers, words, sequences, or verbal explanations.

  3. Reading or writing shows repetitions, additions, transpositions, omissions, substitutions, and reversals in letters, numbers and/or words.

  4. Complains of feeling or seeing non-existent movement while reading, writing, or copying.

  5. Seems to have difficulty with vision, yet eye exams don't reveal a problem.

  6. Extremely keen sighted and observant, or lacks depth perception and peripheral vision.


 

Reads and rereads with little comprehension:

  1. Spells phonetically and inconsistently.

  2. Hearing and Speech Skills

  3. Has extended hearing; hears things not said or apparent to others; easily distracted by sounds.

  4. Difficulty putting thoughts into words; speaks in halting phrases; leaves sentences incomplete; stutters under stress; mispronounces long words, or transposes phrases, words, and syllables when speaking.


 

Writing and Motor Skills:

  1. Trouble with writing or copying; pencil grip is unusual; handwriting varies or is illegible.

  2. Clumsy, uncoordinated, poor at ball or team sports; difficulties with fine and/or gross motor skills and tasks; prone to motion-sickness.

  3. Can be ambidextrous, and often confuses left/right, over/under.

  4. Math and Time Management Skills

  5. Has difficulty telling time, managing time, learning sequenced information or tasks, or being on time.

  6. Computing math shows dependence on finger counting and other tricks; knows answers, but can't do it on paper.

  7. Can count, but has difficulty counting objects and dealing with money.

  8. Can do arithmetic, but fails word problems; cannot grasp algebra or higher math.


 

Memory and Cognition:

  1. Excellent long-term memory for experiences, locations, and faces.

  2. Poor memory for sequences, facts and information that has not been experienced.

  3. Thinks primarily with images and feeling, not sounds or words (little internal dialogue).

  4. Behavior, Health, Development and Personality

  5. Extremely disorderly or compulsively orderly.

  6. Can be class clown, trouble-maker, or too quiet.

  7. Had unusually early or late developmental stages (talking, crawling, walking, tying shoes).

  8. Prone to ear infections; sensitive to foods, additives, and chemical products.

  9. Can be an extra deep or light sleeper; bedwetting beyond appropriate age.

  10. Unusually high or low tolerance for pain.

  11. Strong sense of justice; emotionally sensitive; strives for perfection.


 

What can be done at home for dyslexia?

Helping your child with dyslexia can be a challenge, particularly if you're never been confident in your own reading and writing skills. But you don't have to be an expert to help work on certain skills or strengthen your child's self-esteem.

Keep in mind that kids (and families) are all different, so not all options will work for you. Don't panic if the first strategies you try aren't effective. You may need to try several approaches to find what works best for your child. Here are some things you can try at home:

  • Read out loud every day

  • Tap into your child's interests

  • Use audiobooks

  • Look for apps and other high-tech help

  • Focus on effort, not outcome

  • Make your home reader-friendly

  • Boost confidence

According to most experts, Depression and Diabetes have been intricately connected in a vicious cycle. While the prolonged and sustaining nature of diabetes directly makes one vulnerable to the bouts of depression, doctors tend to locate traces of depression in the family history of an individual in order to diagnose the roots of diabetes. It won't be too far-fetched to state that both causes as well as affects the other.

If you have diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, you have an increased risk of developing depression. And if you're depressed, you may have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes. How Diabetes and Depression Correlated?

Social anxiety cannot be overcome within 1 or 2 days. It is a step by step process which you have to carry out. Firstly you have to start meeting strangers and initiate talking to them. Make friends and talk to them. Slowly you have to increase the number of people you meet and start a conversation with them. To start a conversation, ask their name, their hobbies and about them. Try to give a speech when there are 2 or more people. In this way you can slowly build your confidence and overcome social anxiety.

My grandfather is 83 years old 3 days back he become ill and after treatment he is well now but speaking a lot which is unusual for us, even not getting a sound sleep and even if he take a nap after waking says Anything strange like. It is natural to feel low and miss the person you have lost. However if it is interfering with your sleep, studies or general well being, or if you feel suicidal, you need to consult a psychiatrist. It is common to feel low, cry, feel like you are alone, or lose your self confidence. Usually time is the best healer. However if things are too difficult to handle you should talk to a psychiatrist or counselor. Confide in someone close to you, who will support you in this difficult time. Don't cut off from friends or family, even if you feel like you want to be alone.

Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

Schizophrenia -  Can Biochemical Factors be the Cause Behind it?

Schizophrenia is a disease of the mind that is usually degenerative in nature. The complex disorder is generally characterized by symptoms, such as delusions, hallucinations (both auditory and visual) and disturbances in speech and is usually chronic in nature. The symptoms are not regular and can appear at any point of time. So it is highly possible that a person suffering from schizophrenia may sometimes bear resemblance to any other normal person and all of a sudden, might exhibit symptoms typical of Schizophrenia.

The causes of Schizophrenia include:

  1. Brain Dysfunction: Abnormalities in the cerebral cortex (the cerebrum’s outer covering that is vital in regulating consciousness) of the brain is the most common cause of this disorder. This is due to the presence of abnormally enlarged ventricles in that region. The decreased brain size owing to the enlarged ventricles is often related to the hallucinations and delusions experienced by schizophrenics.
  2. Genetic Factors: Studies have also stated ‘genetics’ to be an important cause behind this disorder. Closer the family ties, higher the risks of transmitting the disorder.
  3. Biochemical Factors: More than one neurotransmitter is being targeted by recent drugs to control schizophrenia.


Symptoms which most people do not experience normally, but are found in people diagnosed with schizophrenia are said to be positive symptoms. They are:

  1. Hallucinations: These are sensory experiences of things that do not exist outside the mind. Hallucinations usually manifest in the form of auditory or visual images.
  2. Delusions: Delusions on the other hand are false beliefs one has about oneself. Delusions are of 3 major types:
    • Grandeur: Wherein the person imagines himself to be a famous personality
    • Persecution: The belief that somebody somewhere is plotting against you and the whole world is going to get you.
    • Control: The belief that a larger force, let’s say a witch, a demon or even a duck for that matter is controlling your actions.

These positive symptoms generally respond well to medications.
In addition to this, schizophrenics think and speak differently than the rest of the society. They jump from idea to idea, lose track of speech mid-way and often speak in fragmented and haphazardly joined sentences. They are, in fact, unable to fix their attention on anything in particular.
Examples of the most common negative symptoms include:

  1. The flat effect: The individual basically shows no facial expression and always has a flat emotionless mask on while staring into space. At times, they have inappropriate reactions to situations. Example - they might laugh at somebody's death and cry ad get angry when something good happens. 
  2. Avolition: This condition occurs when the individual just sit for hours doing nothing as well as behaves in a way lacking any motivation or enthusiasm.

This level of dependence is too much and you must learn to detach from her to this extent. You could work with a counselor to become independent and self dependent. You can also do that by assessing your capabilities in a more realistic manner and discover your ability to make and take decisions. In time, with some practice, you will be able to get it. YOu can also see what skills yoru sister uses to help you and you can do the same. It has been a long time and I am sure if you truly introspect you will be able to know the ways of your sister.

Dear lybrate-user, Psoriasis is a chronic recurrent skin disorder. You are already under treatment. You know the treatment when it recurs. So be confident that you can take treatment, if it recurs. Stress precipitates psoriasis. So manage your stress by relaxation therapy which clinical psychologist will help you to learn. Alternately you can learn yoga and pranayama from any yoga teacher. Do not worry about masturbation. Temporarily it relieves stress. Do it, till you learn other methods of stress management. That is nothing that you can do if you are a left hander. Accept that you are a left hander and live like any other left hander. That is not true that left handers fall in depression. Anyone can become depressed - whether right handed or left handed.

Before 4 years: IT was before 4 years that my mother took me to a psychiatrist for a consultation since I was slow and he recommended me for a "architol" injection, the medicine reacted in the night, my heart beat went up and my whole body (left side) paralyzed the next morning, it stayed till the next night Then we saw a doctor the next day who gave me "pacitane" and my body became normal. Now 2017: Now after 4 years I sometimes get panic attacks and unable to do concentrate without sleep, have nervousness, sometimes unable to eat food also due to GERD, Unable to bear a extreme hot weather, still my left side is sometimes shivering, my breathing is long and feels heavy-hard to breatheVisited a psychiatrist once again and he had done all tests post which he said I have anxiety, has recommended "Tolaz 10 md" which I have taken for 6 months, it puts me to sleep, makes me tired and is helping only a little, This is a issue where not even my friends, wife or relatives are unable to understand as I'm looking and doing this fine, but unable to focus at work, not feeling appetite. I have not been having a job for sometime now. Is this a heart problem.

-You need proper posture correction for sitting Have a look on my health tip about posture and understand proper sitting posture. -avoid long time sitting in one position,keep changing your postion recurrently. -Do stretching whenever u take a break. -the chair or table u use for sitting should be of accurate height so that you dont have to bend so much, it should have proper cushioning and armrests. this corrections will help u a lot. Hi, Thanks for writing in, welcome to the forum. Since you are saying that the problem is happening for last three months and has not been your general nature, there is reason to suspect that a psychological disorder is playing a role and it is not merely a part of your personality. Depression can often present in this manner and an evaluation for the same is certainly warranted. Many other related psychological conditions also merit consideration and evaluation. Although the problems will eventually get better (about which there is not much doubt), for the time being it is causing a lot of distress. Treatment can be done with counseling or psychotherapy, with or without additional medicines based on the exact diagnosis and severity. I suggest that you should meet an expert in your locality for problems like this and chalk out the exact plan. The idea of suggesting certain tips or medicines online or over phone may seem tempting but in reality, in situations such as this where the exact diagnosis and severity is not clear, can become very problematic. So, I suggest that you put this plan into action and I can say with reasonable certainty that you will get better soon. Take care!

Many a times for anxiety disorder, you need to take long term medications. So kindly consult your psychiatrist regularly and take them as advised. Newer desvenlafaxine has come, which controls anxiety better then plain venlafaxine. Discuss with your psychiatrist. All the best.

I suffer from depression for a long time, feel stressed most of the time with frequent bouts of severe panic. I have become very timid and withdrawn that I have been facing a diminishing financial profile, worsening relations and naturally a target of predatory minds many times. It is so debilitating that I can't finish my masters degree and totally dysfunctional that I couldn't do simple things let alone pursue a career and have a family. I was among the toppers in my school till plus two, highly motivated and popular with great expectations in my extended relations and friends for my talent including that in fine arts. I had to go through Meningitis subsequently along with demise of my Grandma who had been the pillar of strength after the sudden death of my mom. The events took a nose dive since then with education taking backseat and my failing to cope with peer pressure in education. I have severe aversion to food and disturbed sleep pattern which make the condition even worse. I have been on medication for the past 24 years, I think I became psychologically and physically dependant on those medicines with their adverse effects getting more potent by the day. I'm single with almost no close relatives and with very few friends need to know if there are any treatments with prognosis however little good it is? Your problem is that you have not sought counseling in tandem with the medication. You need to combine these two therapies to get the best results. When you were doing yoru plus two you would have been in your late teens: a time when hormonal imbalances and resolving all childhood issues that failed to get adequate attention. Because it has likely begun at that time, it is certain that an unresolved issue from childhood is a matter to contend with in therapy. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

I am 25 years old n I am a mba student. As I am normal guy I am not able to concentrate more on studies rather my attention diverts towards gals n nw my mind is more thinking of loosing virginity all d time? So is this is right time fa to do n I can not even do tat because I hate to ly down wit bitches or call gals as I do not have any girl friend so wat is the best way to get out of this n concentrate on studies?

Behavioral addiction is a form of addiction that involves a compulsion to engage in a rewarding non-drug-related behavior – sometimes called a natural reward – despite any negative consequences to the person's physical, mental, social or financial well-being. Behavior addiction needs to be curbed or controlled using your own self will power. Diverting your mind and body away from the circumstances which compels you for the addictive habit, with the help of physical exercises, games, entertainment etc can help you. Never sleep alone. Be always with your family even at night etc are some other tips. Willpower is the key always. Behavioral therapy also works well. Take care.

Hi I am 40 years old and I was having a mild depression for which I was taking the medicine pari cr .25 with one supplement for the last 1 years but gradually I stopped taking these medicine for the 7 to 8 months approx I was feeling perfectly ok but for the last three four days I am not feeling comfortable as again the fear is there in my mind or is it the anxiety I am not figuring it out and I don't want to start these medicines again can anybody suggest me some natural way to curb this feeling helpless pls suggest.

Hello Mr. Wadhwa, You can try these tips : Practice Deep breathing Eat healthy - Leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and juices, walnuts. A good night sleep is must. Walk everyday in greenery. No to coffee and NO to alcohol. For anxiety you can take counselling sessions also. Since you are a hypertension patient please ask your doctor first if you can do all these exercises. and I suggest you not to stop medicines without your doctor's consent. Thanks, Archana Narwani

Dear, You must be able to understand Concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with "effective learning" techniques. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration. Take care.

Concentration is a mental skill you can develop.There are two ways to improve your concentration: First, raise your brain's natural ability to concentrate. In other words, increase your attention. Second, adjust the environment around you to make concentrating easier. Step 1: Power Up Your Brain When you learn a new skill, memorize information, or develop a new habit, the connections in your brain change. This is an exciting discovery. It's further evidence that your brain's abilities, including the ability to concentrate effectively, can be changed for the better.these changes do not occur overnight, however. You have to work at it consistently and regularly. Start building into your daily schedule habits that lead to increased brain power. Ideas for daily concentration-boosting habits include: 1.Mindfulness meditation -- Many studies confirm that 20 minutes of meditation or more per day improves concentration and attention span. Focusing on your breathing, known as mindfulness meditation, is one of the simplest way to meditate. Start with ten minutes in the morning and ten minutes before bed. 2.Proper sleep -- unless you are getting sufficient restful sleep, you are not going to be as mentally focused as you could be. 3.Peppermint Tea -- Research suggests the scent of peppermint tea can boost alertness and mood. Drink a cup of peppermint tea for a quick pick-me-up. 4.Vitamins and other supplements -- There are several brain enhancement supplements and other vitamins for memory that may improve your concentration. 5.Practice Clock Concentration. This is a concentration-training exercise anyone can do. All you need is a clock that has a second hand. Sit very still in front of an analog clock (a clock with hands). Without moving your body or looking away, watch the second hand travel around the clock face for five minutes. 6.Brain games -- The more you use certain skills, the more they are reinforced in the brain, research. So playing concentration games and games that require you to focus will improve your concentration ability. 7.Eat healthier -- Your brain needs the proper nutrients to allow you to focus, and your blood sugar needs to be properly regulated (the brain consumes glucose, a sugar, as its primary fuel). Step 2: Optimize Your Mental State & Environment In addition to building the habits described above into your daily routine, also adjust your environment and your current mental state to improve your concentration when studying. 1.Try the color red -- To improve focus, look at red. According to researchers red improves concentration and memory (while blue improves creativity). Researchers found that a small splash of color is all you need to benefit from the effect. Try these ideas: - Put red paper in a picture frame on your desk, as I've done. - Set small red items on your desk. - Add red to your outfit, such as a red shirt, red tie, or red scarf. - Change your computer's desktop background to red. 2.Create a study spot -- Your brain loves routine. Create a place where all you do is study.Studying in bed is a bad habit, for example, because your body is trained to want to sleep once you get into bed. 3. Practice Your Listening Skills -- Conversations are a great time to strengthen your powers of concentration. Focus on what the other person is saying. Work to understand their point of view. This builds your muscle of attention. 4.Take mental snapshots -- Flex your concentration muscles by taking mental snapshots at important events.Practicing this will improve your concentration and form a vivid memory of the event. 5.Remove distractions -- Turn off the ringer on your phone and take other steps to prevent interruptions. 6.Use Time Boxes -- Set a time limit when you need to study new material. Set a timer to keep yourself honest, then pace yourself to keep within the alotted time. The use of Time Boxes can really improve your concentration by helping you stay intently focused on the material. 7.Activate your theta waves -- The brain is not always in a state of readiness to remember new material, but it turns out you can change this by deepening your breathing. When it's time to study or remember something new, switch your breathing to slower and deeper. Deep breathing actually changes the way your brain works by inducing the brain's electrical pulses to switch to Theta waves. Theta waves normally occur during hypnogogic sleep. This is the stage of sleep when outside noises like an alarm clock can influence dreaming.To activate your Theta waves, switch your breathing to your lower abdomen. In other words, start breathing deeply from your stomach. Consciously slow your rate of breathing too.After a few moments, you should feel calmer, the Theta waves should be flowing in your brain, and you should be more receptive to concentrating on new information.To improve your concentration even more, combine intentional deep breathing with mindfulness meditation. 8. Stay motivated with rewards. If you see studying as drudge work, it's hard to concentrate. One way to stay motivated is to set up a reward system.Tell yourself you have to earn that hour of watching your favorite show later in the evening by first completing one hour of intense studying. 9.Take a break every two hours. You mental energy will begin to decline after a long period of study. So every two hours or so, take a ten minute break. Walk around, eat a light snack, or just stare at the wall to relax your mind. Concentrating is the first step to learning anything new. It only makes sense that if you improve your concentration, your memory will improve also.
