Vaginal Piercing - What the Possible Risks Involved?

MICOG, MS, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Vaginal Piercing - What the Possible Risks Involved?

Piercing is a form of body ornamentation. It involves the use of needles to pierce through the skin and attach a piece of jewellery to the skin. The purpose of piercing is to beautify and in case of genital piercing, it comes with the additional perks of sexual stimulation. However, this completely depends on individual preference. In the female genital anatomy, several parts are suitable for piercing. This includes the clitoral hood, the labia and the vulva vestibule.

How piercing should be done?
1. The skin around the area where the piercing is to be done must be cleaned with antiseptic.
2. A topical anaesthetic may be applied to temporarily numb the area to be pierced. This helps to control pain.
3. Any piercing must be carried out by a licensed, well-practised professional.
4. Piercing must be done with the use of new, unused, sterilized needles, which are easily disposable.
5. After-care must be provided immediately after the piercing. This includes the application of medicated healing creams, or an ice pack that relieves the pain of piercing. Typically a piercing should heal completely by the sixth week.

Risks associated with vaginal piercing
1. Wrong technique of piercing can lead to uncontrollable bleeding and wounds.
2. Poor placement of jewellery can cause the piercing to heal very slowly and painfully.
3. Poor sterilization of needles and unhygienic methods can cause severe skin infections and other complications.
4. Tearing of skin or sagging of the clitoral hood, or labia can occur due to the improper weight of the jewellery placed.
5. Spread of genital disease may occur if the piercer does not use gloves or antiseptic during the procedure.

Never opt for a piercing just because your friends are getting it done. A healthy method of getting pierced involves an understanding of your anatomy, skin type, tolerance of certain kinds of metal on your skin and extremely hygienic conditions. It sure is fashionable and may appeal to people with a different sense of aesthetics, but you must never ignore the risks. Do a thorough background check of the piercer you would like to visit and the possible after care products that you can use. It would also help to quickly get a check up done by a doctor before going ahead with the piercing. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

I am 20 years old and recently I have noticed a bad odour when I come from college not only in summers but winters and I do not use perfumes a lot. Advice me some home remedies mostly please.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Wipe rubbing alcohol, vinegar or hydrogen peroxide onto your underarms during the day to cut down the numbers of odour-causing bacteria. ‘ Dab on witch hazel. You can splash it directly on your skin or apply it as often as necessary with a cotton pad. The clear, clean-smelling liquid has drying and deodorizing properties. ‘ Dust baking soda or cornstarch on any odour-troubled part of your body. Both of these powders absorb moisture, and baking soda also kills odour-causing bacteria. ‘ Shave regularly under your arms. Underarm hair can increase body odour because it traps sweat and bacteria. ‘ Apply tea-tree oil to problem areas, as long as it doesn’t irritate your skin. This oil, from an Australian tree, kills bacteria and also has a pleasant scent. ‘ Essential oils of lavender, pine and peppermint fight bacteria. They also smell nice. Since some people have a skin reaction to certain oils, test the underarm area or a small patch of skin before using.

When we do gymming testosterone hormone levels are raised in blood. Increased testosterone has been linked to decreased IQ levels, however there is no scientific evidence for the same. Logically speaking light exercise will increase blood flow to brain. So it is advised to do light exercises, yoga, pranaya etc for better IQ.

Dear, psychiatric medications are not meant to get dependent on them. You may have got relief the first time in a month period and that is a good sign that your body had ability to recover fast. May be your anxiety was not complicated by factors which may be present now. This time if your anxiety is not getting controlled, its better either you visit another doctor or simply ask him to change medicines. If he doesn't do that, then its better you should try Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) this time. It is a form of psychotherapy and targets symptoms of anxiety very well. There are several techniques in this form of therapy and step by step, in a short period of time, you may easily regulate your symptoms. That means, CBT is a form of therapy which makes you the master of your symptoms, rather than medicines. Medicinal treatment assumes that all symptoms of anxiety (or any other disorder) are due to changes in brain chemistry but ignores several other psychological factors which can be dealt only with psychotherapy. Your psychiatrist has put you on medical treatment which is generally the first line treatment for any patient but good psychiatrists always ask to get psychotherapy too. Relapse of symptoms that has happened with you may be dealt better with CBT rather than medicines. This time you MUST consider taking CBT from a good psychotherapist. Psychotherapists are Clinical Psychologists who are trained to provide different forms of psychotherapy. As I can read here, you are able to realize that your palpitations are triggered by stress or other things. This awareness is sufficient to work on cognitive and behavioral aspects of your anxiety. If anxiety gets controlled by medicines, its good, but it is always recommended to take CBT.

My dad is 60 year old. He has giddiness from last one month. His blood pressure is fluctuating every day. Today his blood pressure is 140/90. He was suggested to take infection tablets and cold tablets. Can you tell me the exact reason..

M.B;B.S, P.G.(FAMILY MEDICINE), D.O.H.
General Physician, Hyderabad
Dear, The suggestion w as wrong, because for an elderly person with out assessing the cause of fluctuating B.P. we should not treat the case. Your dad may require 1.Regular B.P.check up by a qualified doctor 9am & 9pm both sitting &standing positions. If B.P. is persistently high, he may require medication and diagnostic tests as the case may be.
