How Exercise Can Help with Rheumatoid Arthritis

If you are middle aged and can feel pain in your joints and can see them get inflamed and turn red, chances are that you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. An early diagnosis can help control it through medication, lifestyle changes and exercise.

Exercise is one of the most important aspects of the treatment of this disease. Exercise has many benefits for a rheumatoid arthritis patient. Some of these are: 

  1. Increased flexibility: Exercise helps relieve the stiffness caused by the disease and keeps your joints flexible. 
  2. Stronger muscles and bones: This helps strengthen the muscles that support joints. It also helps strengthen bones by making them denser and thus preventing fractures. 
  3. Pain management: When you exercise, the joints are kept flexible and the pain associated with moving them is reduced. 
  4. A healthier heart: Rheumatoid arthritis increases the risk of suffering from heart disease. By exercising regularly, the heart muscles are kept healthy and there are lowered chances of heart diseases.

Before you begin exercising consult your doctor to see what kind of exercises are suitable for you and what should be avoided.

Your exercise plan should cover these three points: 

  1. Cardio: Avoid high impact exercises like running on paved roads and instead create a low impact exercise routine for yourself. Walking, swimming and cycling are good forms of exercise to increase your heart rate. Try and exercise for 30 minutes a day. 
  2. Flexibility: Exercise is the only way to fight stiffness in joints. Do gentle stretches that are relaxing and do not hurt. Stretching a good way to warm up before cardio but should never be hurried. If a muscle starts paining while you re stretching it, stop immediately. 
  3. Strength training: This sort of exercise helps build muscle strength and can be done in a gym or at home. Lifting hand held weights, working with resistance bands and using your own weight to create resistance are some ways of strength training. Start by doing these exercises every alternate day. As your muscles get stronger, you can increase the number of sets of each exercise. Avoid heavy weight lifting. The important part of exercising is to be regular. Exercising with a friend can help you stay motivated. Setting goals for yourself in terms of number of hours a week can also help keep you moving.

Knee Replacement Recovery Tips

Knee replacement surgery is a procedure that is used to replace a worn out knee joint with an artificial knee joint. Such a surgery is advised if your knee is causing pain and limiting your daily activities, provided other treatments have failed to cause the desired impact. Once the knee replacement surgery is completed, the focus shifts to the recovery phase.

  1. The duration of the recovery depends on the type of surgery and the individual.

  2. After the surgery, painkillers are administered to provide relief from the pain.

  3. In some cases, oxygen is administered through various tubes if required.

  4. A blood transfusion may also be required after a knee replacement surgery.

  5. The surgical wound will require a dressing to allow it to heal faster and prevent infection.

  6. A drain will be attached to the wound to drain out the blood from it and prevent accumulation of blood in the wound.

  7. The dressing of the wound should be changed regularly.

Post- Surgery Care

  • Post-surgery, you will need assistance to help you walk. If the surgery that you underwent was minimally invasive, then you should be able to walk on the very same day. Your physiotherapist will prescribe and show you some exercises to strengthen the knee. It is important that you follow his/her instructions to avoid complications.

Here are some knee replacement recovery tips:

  1. Avoid doing any work that puts pressure on the knees.

  2. Eat nutritious meals so that the body receives proper nourishment, thus allowing your leg to heal faster.

  3. Avoid heavy exercises which can strain your knees.

  4. Perform all the exercises prescribed by your physiotherapist to speed up the recovery process.

  5. Do not sit with your legs crossed for a few months after the surgery.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

I suggest you do not take any ting for gain weight I will suggest you best method for gain weight I suggest you easy method of weight gain just follow it for year you will gain weigh defiantly 1. Start exercise regularly for 3 month and then after 3 month leave it for 3 month at the time of exercise your diet will increase but same diet continue after 3 month when you stop exercise so thats why your weight will increase automatically now we discus about diet 2. Take dates with milk in the morning breakfast 3. Triphala kadha 4 tsp beore lunch and dinner 4. Hi lybrate-user, bones become stronger with calcium intake, Dietary sources of calcium include milk & milk products like paneer, cheese, yogurt, lentils, beans, green leafy vegetables, soybean,salmon (fish). Have a high protein, medium carbs diet .Include 2 -3 serving of fruits & vegetables daily. Exercise / walk for atleast 30 minutes.

Hye, Thanks for the query. If you want to gain some weight, you need to eat more calories than you burn. 1. Eat 5 to 6 meals a day In order to gain weight, you need to start eating 5-6 meals a day. However, it is important that you break these meals into parts, as eating a lot at once may result in indigestion. Also, be sure to include healthy foods in your diet for a healthy weight gain. 2. Weight train at least 3 times a week When you train with weights, your muscles grow. 3. Consume more calories than you burn. Eating calories more than your normal intake may not be easy, but you must do it if you want to stop being skinny. Make sure you don’t do it just by overeating at once, but instead do it gradually over the whole day. 4. Work out your entire body A lot of gym goers usually train only the muscles on their arms, chest and shoulders and this is a grave error. Make sure you workout your entire body for a wholesome weight gain. 5. Load up on protein As informed earlier, you have to consume more calories than your normal intake every day. You can do this by eating foods rich in protein like dairy, meat, eggs, nuts, dry fruits, pulses, sprouts, smoothies, milk shakes etc. 6. Drink your calories It may be tough to meet your calorie requirements by just eating. Lybrate-user ji. Looking to your prblm. Your weight is much more than wht you should have according to your height. You can hv a maximum wt of 74 kg. So try nd reduce your wt by 18-19 kgs. You may also b hving some arthritis due to your age. As cartilage of your knee must b damaged. Nd to rejuvunate it you need to take some medicines. For that you need to consult me privately. Nd yes as far as possible do not use staircase till you reduce your wt to 74 kg. Do not bend your knee for more than 90 degree. I mean stop using indian toilets nd use western toilets. Use dining table for taking lunch or dinner. I mean do not sit on the floor.

Follow these best methods to easily gain weight and get a healthy body - 1. To gain weight, your digestion should work properly for proper digestion - take 10 gms powder of carom seeds (ajwain, 10 gm powder of cumin (jeera), 10 gm of rock salt.
