Tips to help you get active

Physiotherapist, Delhi
Tips to help you get active
Choose a variety of physical activities you enjoy. Try different activities until you find the ones that feel right for you.
Get into a routine — go to the pool, hit the gym, join a spin class or set a regular run and do some planned exercise. Make it social by getting someone to join you.
Limit the time you spend watching TV or sitting in front of a computer during leisure time.
Move yourself — use active transportation to get places. Whenever you can, walk, bike, or run instead of taking the car.
Spread your sessions of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity throughout the week. Do at least 10 minutes of physical activity at a time.
Join a team — take part in sports and recreation activities in groups. You’ll make new friends and get active at the same time.

Is there any lab test to ascertain whether my son is a drug addict. Suppose he had constant drugs on the last three days.

M B B S, M. D (Internal Medicine)
General Physician, Nellore
Yes there are tests. SRL RANBAXY does them. They are usually done in their central lab in Mumbai. But, please note that there is a separate test for each individual drug and each test costs around 5000. So, you have to know which drug you are testing for and there are some addictive drugs which cannot be tested. Besides this, some corporate hospitals (high end) do have those tests available.

Will vitamin D save my life? Should I really be taking four times the recommended daily dose?

MBBS
General Physician, Cuttack
Norma level of vit d is between between 20-50ng/ml. A level less than 20 ng/ml indicates vitamin d deficiency. Vitamin d3 is essential for healthy bone, teeth, muscle, cell growth, immunity, neuro muscular functioning and overall health. Deficiency causes ricket/osteomalacia, poor hair growth, increased risk of cancer. 1. Expose yourself to sunlight for 15-20 minutes daily in the morning 2. Take milk, cheese, egg yolk, fish (salmon/mackerel/ trout/sardines/tuna) cod liver oil, mushroom, cereals, orange juice. 3. If you have deficiency of vitamin d you have to take vitamin d supplement 60000iu/week fo r 3 months after consulting.

Healthy Living

PGD Maternal Child Health, MBBS
General Physician, Akola
Healthy Living

Quantitative and qualitative changes in diet and regular exercise can keep the blood sugar at lower levels and may help in reducing the need for medicines, or use them in lesser doses.

Small frequent meals in place of 2 regular meals at lunch and dinner helps in preventing a rise in post-meal sugar levels to high levels. Qualitatively stopping the use of direct sugar and food items containing carbohydrates like rice, potatoes, mangoes, grapes etc prevents high sugar levels.

Regular walking briskly keeps weight in control and prevents obesity. Increased weight increases insulin requirement and a relative deficiency of insulin leads to high sugar levels.

Diabetes causes silent damage to blood vessels in kidneys, retina, heart, brain and all over the body. Ultimately the effects are seen as kidney failure, blindness, heart attacks, paralysis and nonhealing ulcers and gangrene. Severe diabetes may cause ketoacidosis, coma, and death.

Hence, it is wise to be careful with diet and exercise.

For 5 ft 10 inch, ideal weight is between 77-80 kg. He should avoid the following to lose weight as well as to control sugar levels: 1) sugar, gur, sweets, sugary items like jams, jellies etc. 2) processed and ready to eat food like chips, namkeens etc 3) refined flour or maida items 4) cut down on saturated fat or solid fats like ghee, butter 5) fried foods like pakodas, samosas etc following food items should be taken in moderation: 1) fruits- mango, litchi, chickoo, grapes and bananas 2) vegetables- patatoes, sweet patatoes and arbi 3) suji or semolina and white rice 4) nuts like dates, raisins etc he should include more fibre in the diet as fiber helps in controlling the blood sugar levels and also helps in losing weight. For this he should have plenty of vegetables and whole pulses. Ask him to include salad before both the meals. Hope this will help.
