I have diabetes last four to five months what I can then I control my diabetes please give me addwise.
Mr. Lybrate-user to control diabetes you have to do following things: 1) take appropriate medication regularly without missing a dose, 2) take a restricted diet, that gives exact calories based on ideal body weight, blood sugar levels and extent of daily physical activity. 3) do a periodic checking of blood sugar initially more often later once in 15 days or once a month. 4) exercise daily for at least 1 hour a day so as to spend more calories, avoid weight increase and have a feeling of well being.

I am 41 years old house wife, and post hysterectomy 13 years back, now having hypothyroidism, current test shows TSH is 17.48 uIU/ml. T4 5.8, T3 107 ng/DL. Now I have tiredness, hair loss, body ache. My doctor given 50 mg thyronorm tab 1 for every day. Can you suggest food habits and other controls for speedy recover, and future of my life.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
When on treatment for hypothyroidism, to get all symptoms in control, TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. So TSH 17.48 is too high, showing uncontrolled hypothyroidism. Hence all the symptoms like tiredness, fatigue and hair loss will continue. It appears the dosage of thyroxine is low. Needs to be increased to at least by another 25 mg or more. After taking that dose for 6 weeks check TSH levels again to see if desired decrease has occurred or not. As regards food please avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, peanuts and coffee. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads, fruits and use whole grain flour, avoid maida. Thanks.

What food must be avoided in case of high Uric acid (7.31) and high potassium level (5.31)?pls adv -thanks a lot!
Mr. Lybrate-user, in case of high uric acid, it is better to avoid high purine containing foods like red meat, organ meat, certain sea foods like herring, trout, sardines, salmon, haddock, scallops, mushrooms, mussels. Can consume eggs, low fat milk products, most vegetarian foods. High potassium content is seen in bananas, mushrooms, salmon fish, avocados, baked potatoes, milk and milk products etc. Also green leafy vegetables.

Mr. Lybrate-user, usually a minimum of 30 minutes a day of physical activity is recommended to keep fit and prevent adding additional weight. So the amount of exercise being done by you (cycling) appears to be good enough. But still if you walk for another 20 minutes a day, that will add to keep fit as well as remain free from diabetes. Thanks for the question.
