My son 4 y old has a nodule, small lump ,or knot like on his neck near thyroid gland. He complains no pain or any difficulty while eating or swelling. Notably the small lump is so small that one can not notice while looking at his neck normally. Wht it may be.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH)
Pediatrician, Pune
If the node moves with swallowing it is associated with the thyroid gland. Otherwise you can ignore it as of now.

Mr. lybrate-user, TSH value of 6.543 mU/L, is just above the normal limit. Usually no treatment is advised. However, in your case with a BMI of 30.06 kgs/M2, with grade 1 obesity, it is better for you to start treatment. Otherwise efforts to reduce weight will not yield any results. Thanks.

I am 53 years old male and diabetic (120- 150 range Post Prondial). Taking tablets. Can I consume beer (one bottle) once or twice in a week?

MD - Consultant Physician
General Physician, Mumbai
Your diabetes is under control. Beer will increase your blood sugar but I do not think consuming it once or twice a week is bad for you as long as it does not exceed that and your diabetes and body weight are okay.

I have thyroid since 8 months and I have very irregular periods and I am trying to conceive what to do?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
I have thyroid since 8 months and I have very irregular periods and I am trying to conceive what to do?
Lybrate-user, hypothyroidism causes irregularity of menstrual periods. But if is well controlled, then all the symptoms disappear including menstrual irregularities. To achieve good control tsh levels should be between 3 to 4 milli units when on treatment. Further, if conception is desired then tsh levels have to be brought down to 2 to 3 milli units/ml. Otherwise conception may not occur, if occurs, fetal development may be affected and pregnancy outcome may not be good. So please see that tsh levels are brought down to 2 to 3 milli units even before you conceive. If you have any doubts please come back. Best of luck.

Diabetes is to be managed life long. Please do not worry. Accept it gracefully and make a routine habit of thinking about good health and living a healthy lifestyle. Do yoga every day and be active (you can have brisk walk for 20 mins daily) and also develop a hobby which makes you happy and relaxed. Keep checking you r sugar levels regularly (fbs/ppbs and hba1c). You r doctor will help you with the medications. On your part - be active and have a positive attitude.

It is diabetes as fasting is more than 126 & hba1c more than 6.5. But there is no readon to worry as she can be managed with diet control and exercises that is bridk walking. She should avoid sugar and fried items to loose weight. She can eat all types if dals and vegetables. She should get investigated for complication of diabetes affecting eyes kidneys and heart as some patients have complications at time of diagnosis.

He need to become aware of the importance of getting the sugar under control. Just by following simple health tips he can become better. Tell him to plan his day in advance so that he can implement healthy rules in a study manner. Diet, exercise, sleep and mental relaxation are very important for everyone including diabetes patients. He should eat only healthy food and avoid all junk and processed food. Avoid all bad habits. He can have a small meal every 3 hrs. Drink enough water 8-10 glasses of water. Have lots of salads and vegetables as they contain good nutrients but less calories. Yoga can be very beneficial as it is very safe and can be learnt at any age. If needed you can add Homeopathy to his current medications after a detailed case history. You can contact me for a private consultation and Homeopathic treatment.

Hello Doctors, is eating peanuts and peanut butter good for hypothyroidism? I am taking 125 mcg Thyronorm every day. I need to know what foods are good and what foods to avoid. I am also under treatment for diabetes and I am using Glyciphage. Thank you for your knowledge.

Hello Doctors, is eating peanuts and peanut butter good for hypothyroidism? I am taking 125 mcg Thyronorm every day. ...
Mr. lybrate-user, If hypothyroidism is present following things (foods, veges) need to be avoided - soy beans, soy containing foods, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, peanuts, mustard, radish and coffee. The reason for avoiding these products is that they affect thyroxine absorption and action. But some times other than soy beans and soy products rest of the things can be taken, but well after 4 hours of the dosage of thyroxine. Plus you should avoid bakery items, other products made out of maida. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. For being free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. As regards diabetes control it is essential to maintain fasting glucose closer to 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8. Thanks.
