Mr. Lybrate-user, diabetes t2 is a preventable disease, so is high blood pressure. But t1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease and can not be prevented. Following healthy habits, exercising regularly, taking a balanced diet, avoiding junk food, alcohol and smoking can help a person healthy and free from diabetes (t2) and high blood pressure. But no one can remain totally disease free. Human skin colour can not be changed, whatever one might do or apply to it. One should accept the colour god has given. Taking various vitamin supplements without any deficiency is not going to benefit.

I am diabetic patient from last six month. In starting it was 300+ but after changing food habit and in regular medicine sugar level maintained at 90 to 110. Is it possible to maintain this without taking medicine and maintaining disciplined food habit? please suggest. I am 39 years old, my current food habit are. Morning - tea without sugar and biscuit breakfast - roti, veg and milk lunch - roti, veg & one apple after lunch dinner - roti, veg or chicken on sundays or holidays, take rice with dal, veg and chicken or biryani in lunch.

Are you still on medications? are these reports done while you are on medications? in that case, diet alone is unlikely to keep your sugars controlled. If you need convincing, you can try reducing the medicine doses gradually and continue to diet while checking your sugars every alternate day. If the sugars start to rise, then it means the medicines are absolutely required.

I am diabetic from last 5 yrs. My fasting result is between 100-118 average and pp is 150-200 average. I am taking jalra m 50/1000 in the morning after breakfast and 50/500 after dinner. I suffer a lots from uric acid and leg pain. And so recently my physician have prescribed me furic 40. Please provide me a international prescribed proper diet. At one time I was taking insulin human mixtard 30/70 as I was suffering from infection in my operated knee as the blood level was high for one month. There is myth that taking sugar control pills lead to kidney damage in future. Is it true? And taking insulin prevents kidney damage. please clarify.

Mr. Lybrate-user mustafa, the glucose levels mentioned look fairly good. Ideally fasting should be closer to 100 mg (as it is now), pp should be 150 to 160 mg and hba1c%<7 (ideally <6.8%). Your sugar control can be improved by diet and exercise to the required ideal level. As regards the exact diet, it has to be very specific and individualised, based on present dietary practice, sugar levels, extent of daily exercise and present dietary pattern. So I prescribe the same if you supply all those details. In the mean time I am giving general guide lines as to which foods to be taken or avoided. Avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, sweetened aerated drinks, red meat, high fat milk products, fructose corn syrup containing products and highly processed foods. Refrain from alcohol and smoking completely. Consume more of green leafy vegetables & salads, permitted fruits (100 g a day). Use whole grain products and whole grain flour for chapati and roti, no maida. Your diet should give calories based on ideal body weight, exercise and sugar levels. Regards.

Mr. Lybrate-user, it would have been better if you had mentioned the actual test results, as that would have given a clear idea. On treatment tsh levels should be between 3 to 4 mu/l, for being free from all symptoms. Further, it is better ifyou get a blood glucose test done. Thanks.

YOur pancreas is getting weaker which is the cause of sugar. Can you send me your FBS, 2Hr PPBS & HbA1C to me privatelyDiabetes affects all organs in the body ? Eyes, kidneys, nerves, reproductive system all are affected, In fact, from toe to hair. For diabetic control, patient and doctor should be n constant touch for regular follow up and advice. It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose ? SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS),& HbA1C ( inform me ) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me privately with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance.

Tight glycemic control comes at a risk of hypoglycemia. Regular and timely meals along wid insulin reduces d risk of hypoglycemia. You should monitor your sugar and visit your doctor regularly for fine adjustment of insulin doses.

Hi Your blood sugars are high. Healthy lifestyle changes will be helpful for you like: 1. Eat small meals every 2 - 3 hrs. 2. Have increased amounts of proteins, as they help in weight loss and do not increase blood sugar. 3. Avoid carbohydrates like rice, pasta, breads, biscuits, sugar, sweetened beverages, alcohol, butter especially for dinner. 4.Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and green leafy vegetables, do not use mayonnaise for your salad dressing instead use olive oil or flax seed oil. 5. Make sure you exercise atleast for 30 min a day on atleast 5 days a week. 6. If your a non vegetarian have white meat (fish, chicken) twice a week, preferably steamed or boiled. Avoid deep fried food. You can have 2 egg whites per day, preferably for breakfast. 7. Do not take fruits at bedtime or with your major meals. Always snack your fruit. 8. MBBS, DGO (cal)
General Physician,
Control of Diabetes is a is therapy done by a combined and serious team consisting of The Patient and the physician. Physician advises. Unless the recipient, I mean the patient seriously asks Physician is also can not give you the fullest. Its a psychological bond which is above all a professional advice only. Your uncontrolled diabetes may due to either your non compliance to the advice of physician or incompetent advice of the physician. I have no reason to believe the second part of the statement. I may believe at this juncture to stick to the following part and retest your BS fter 15 days. If you see any improvement, go back to your doctor and listen list him and follow his advice. If he is not giving your satisfactory attention, I know you know what to do. A patent always choose he physician not the physician choose his patient. He may love him with empathy. 1) Brisk Walking 5 Km daily - whether over weight or not, of course if it is not contraindicated by your treating physician. 2) Keep your Body Mass Index within 24 Kg / Meter Square of your body surface area, that is your healthy weight - by exercise and dietary management. 3) Diets - STOP the following - Sweet, Sugar, Potato, Fried substances, Starchy foods, Sweet drinks, Canned juices, Ice creams, Processed juice of any type. Butter, Cheese Avoid rice (if at all never more than one leveled Tea Plateful / day) Normal or high protein. Low fat. High fibre - Leafy vegetables + Vegetables (particularly less starchy and coloured one, which contains more antioxidants) 4) Meditation for 20 mins daily Hope its OK for the time being.

Mr Manjunath, Along with taking appropriate medicines are exercising regularly for more than 1 hour a day? That is vey important as it increases Insulin action and helps reduce resistance to its action. Plus taking a balanced and restricted diet providing exact calories based on Ideal Body Weight, blood sugar levels and extent of daily exercise. These measure are also equally essential. Plus there may be a need to have a re look at present treatment and additional therapy may be needed.
