Hi, i m 31 years old. I would like to know about thyroid. I went for a thyroid test my tsh level was high but t3 and t4 level were normal. Can you tell me what does that mean? Do I suffer from thyroid? Do I need to take medicine for this?

MD - Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Kangra
yes even if t3 and t4 levels are normal if tsh is raised it suggest subclinical hypothyroidism...it needs observation bcoz the patients usually develop overt hypothyroidism in long run and need treatment

Dear lybrateuser, - His blood sugar is high, he should follow dietary precautions - have more of fibre containing foods like vegetables including green leafy & seasonal ones, wholegrains, legumes including lentils, pulses, beans, spouts, nuts, low fat milk & milk products, lean proteins including seafood & chicken( avoid red meat) - avoid fried, processed, junk food, sweets, foods containing saturated & trans fats - stop alcohol as it leads to increase in calories & weight - consult a diabetologist as he will require medication to control his sugar levels.

How to prevent Diabetes

Prevention is better than cure, and this is the absolute truth when it comes to battling Diabetes

If you want to prevent Diabetes from occurring within in your family and friends than you should understand and remember the basics of it.

Diabetes mellitus is neither a singular nor isolated form of occurrence. It a group of diseases, marked by high blood sugar levels which occurs when our body is unable to produce and utilize insulin optimally. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas and it is important to maintain blood sugar.

Common symptoms of Diabetes include

1. Increased thirst and Urination

2. Increased Hunger

3. Weight loss

4. Fatigue

5. Blurred Vision

6. Extreme craving (for fatty and sugary food items)

Uncontrolled Diabetes can lead to complications such as Blindness, Loss of Memory, Kidney malfunction, Fatty Liver, Heart Disease, Nerve Damage leading to Amputations.

Type 2 Diabetes is most common variety. it develops when the body fails to utilize the insulin properly and is most commonly now found in overweight children.

Here are 5 ways you can prevent it

1. Curb it young: Forget the myth that children cannot get diabetes. Today, children as young as 12 years of age are suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. Introduce a healthy diet routine for the children as well as for adults in the family. Children are known to emulate what they learn from their elders and thus it is imperative that inculcate healthy eating habits in them right from childhood.

2. Stay Stress-free: Reduce stress in daily life. Stress causes sudden surges in insulin levels.

3. Workout: Exercising regularly helps to keep diabetes at bay.

4. Say No to junk food: Keep Junk Foods restricted to once or maybe twice a month. These days almost all restaurants offer healthy but tasty options to choose from and therefore family or business outings can no longer be an excuse to indulge in heavy, calorific food that is devoid of any real nutrition.

5. Mind your weight: If you are more than 5 Kgs overweight, then please consider going on a diet immediately to reduce sugar levels in your body. Not only would you feel more energetic but also more ‘alive!’

mere papa ki age 45 year hai mere papa ko pichle 10 saal se sugar hai or wo har din sugar ki dose lete hai to mera question yeh hai ki wo har roj itni dose lete hai to iska koi nuksaan to nahi hoga na.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, if he has diabetes mellitus, then treatment has to be taken daily for life time. Hum har rose khate hai, uska glucose banata hai, us glucose ko khoon se nikal kar shareer ke alag bahgome bhejane ke liye insulin ki jaroorat hoti hai. Diabetes ki dava yeh insulin tayar karane ke liye madad karati hai, ya insulin hi diya jata hai. Jab khana rose chahiye to dava ki bhi jaroorat hai. Ye silsila jeevan bhar chalata rahega. Dava na lenese taklif badhegi, dava se nahi.

I am 62. Diabetic and taking 30/70 huminsulin 24 units before breakfast and 20 units before dinner. By mistake I was delivered N100 huminsulin and I broke the seal. Can I use N100 and if so what and when will be my dose?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Yu have to use 100 U syringe and take the correct dose. N 100 is different as it contains long acting Insulin Isophane (NPH)(100IU). There is no short acting part in it. It is taken once daily with additional regular insulin if needed before meals. Need to discuss.

I am 37 years old. And also diabetes and enlarged fatty liver . I consumed alcohol twice or thrice daily. What I should do.

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
Enlarged fatty liver with diabetes and high alcohol consumption will lead to liver failure sooner than you can imagine. So first, get a handle on the situation by cutting your alcohol consumption. Alcohol is going to stress out your liver and its going to become more and more enlarged and then will shrink itself to cirrhosis. You are 36 years- there is still a lot in your hands to change. Sadly, once liver failure will set in- it will be point of no return.

How much water should I drink in a day. I have CKD and S creatinine is 5.25. I am a diabetic type II but it is under control. My HYc1c is 6.8. Before 3 months it was 6.5. My BP is normal at my age 140/80. My weight is 65 Kg. I had urine infection for more than 8 months but now the puss cells are only 5-6.

Post Graduate Diploma in Echocardiography, Mbbs
General Physician, Ernakulam
Please depend on urine pus cells to conclude infection. In your case pus cell count in urine don't indicate anything. You may have to do culture test to conclude. You may also unnecessarily take medications. There is no hard and fast rule for water volume. One way to calculate is to measure urine. You must produce about 1200 to 1500 ml in 24 hours. Measure urine once in 15 days. If you send me your medications. I can help.

Sir how can hyper thyroid (THS) can be controlled with out taking medicines. And how can hyper Thyroid can be cured once for all.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr Malik, Any disease related to thyroid either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism both need to be treated with necessary medicine. Without that there is no way one can control these conditions. Plus these can not be cured, can only be controlled. They remain with us for life time. Some times after a course of antithyroid drug treatment hyperthyroid may completely go away. So my suggestion is to get proper treatment.
