Wanting to look young is not exactly a new idea

MBBS, DDV
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Wanting to look young is not exactly a new idea – the search for the fountain of youth has been going on for centuries.

There are many treatments available to combat the aging effects of the sun, from creams to peels to lasers. Plus, reducing the signs of sun damage can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

The sun and the years take their toll on your skin. Photo ageing is often the first sign that your skin has been damaged, but such repeated exposure can also lead to skin cancer. Luckily, many of the treatments for photo ageing not only restore skin youthful appearance, they also reduce your risk for developing skin cancers and pre cancers.

There are many non-surgical options offered to people who would like to look younger.
1) Creams – Sunscreens, Retinoids.
2) Injectables – Such as Dermal Fillers, Muscle Relaxers.
3) Skin Surface Treatments – Including Chemical Peels and Dermaroller / Micro Needling.
4) Laser, IPL and other heat treatments.
Sunscreens

If you don’t wear a sunscreen every day, today is the day to start. Daily application of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher- whether on its own, or in a moisturizer – will prevent additional damage to your skin. Also, studies have shown that daily use of sunscreen can actually reduce the existing number of actinic keratoses – abnormal skin eruptions or pre cancers that can lead to skin cancer.

Retinoids
Retinoids have been a breakthrough discovery for the treatment of photo aged skin. Synthetic derivatives of Vitamin A, they can improve discoloration of the skin, degeneration of elastic tissue, and fine wrinkling by enhancing naturally occurring production of collagen and elastic fibers. In addition to giving skin back its youthful appearance, retinoids can inhibit tumor growth, decrease inflammation, and enhance the immune system. Continuing use of retinoids can reduce the number and size of actinic keratoses. Currently, two retinoids are available for treatment of photo ageing: (1) Tretinoin (2) Tazarotene. Note that retinoids can irritate the skin and cause dryness and photo sensitivity – an extreme sensitivity to the sun. They are available by prescription only.

Lunch Time Lifts
The “Lunch Time Face Lift” promises a younger, better-looking you with no surgery, no general anaesthetic and no down time. While “Lunch Time” and “Face Lift” may be a bit of a stretch, these days it’s increasingly possible to take a few years off your face in a day clinic without the expense, pain and temporary disappearance from public life associated with surgery.

INJECTABLES Dermal / Skin Fillers
Filling substances are injected under facial skin to round out contours and correct wrinkles, furrows and hollows. A number of substances are currently used as fillers, including bovine collagen, hyaluronic acid, polymer implants, and the patient’s own (autologous) fat. To maintain the effects of bovine collagen and autologous fat, the procedure needs to be repeated periodically. Many of these treatments can be used in conjunction with one another to produce younger-looking. It is important to consult with a licensed dermatologist to discuss treatment options, as many of these treatments can cause damage in inexperienced hands

Rather than just smoothing or tightening skin, they can change the facial profile to a more youthful one.

Hyaluronic acid is now more popular. Hyaluronic acid lasts 6-12 months – although treating areas of the face that move less will last longer those that move more, such as the lips – and you tend to get better results with each treatment. There’s evidence that hyaluronic acid injections can also have a more permanent anti-ageing effect by stimulating collagen growth.

Muscle Relaxers
Botulinum toxin A temporarily paralyses muscles when injected. This prevents the skin above from creasing up and causing wrinkles. It only works on so-called expression lines, such as frown (vertical) lines and surprise (horizontal) lines on the forehead, smoothing them and preventing them from becoming more pronounced. The effects take a few days to kick in, and initially last a few months – longer after continued treatment.Read more…
Liquid Face Lift / Liquid Facial
Combined use of botulinum toxin A and dermal fillers is called a Liquid Face Lift / Liquid Facial.

SKIN TREATMENT

Chemical Peel
Acid, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid or trichloracetic acid, is applied to the skin and exfoliates the top layer of skin, causing dead skin cells to peel off. At stronger concentrations, new tighter skin forms as collagen production is stimulated in response to the wounding. It helps reducing fine lines, small scars, discoloration and sun damaged skin. The stronger the peel, the more dramatic and longer-lasting the results – stronger peels (concentrations of more than 30%) are better left to medical professionals rather than beauticians.
The benefits can last for two years for stronger peels, although it depends on the strength of acid used (which determines how deep the peel is). These days a course of several milder peels, rather than one strong peel, is common. Milder peels may require top-up peels every few months.Read more…

Dermaroller / Micro Needling
Dermarollers are used for a treatment process called micro-needling or skin needling. It is a form of collagen induction therapy. The actual dermaroller is made up of a small, solid wheel attached to a little stick that propels it backwards and forwards across your face in small sections. The roller is covered with hundreds of minuscule ‘micro-medical’ needles that penetrate the skin, creating lots of tiny micro injuries.Read more…

Intense Pulsed Light
Intense pulsed light, commonly abbreviated as IPL, is a technology used by medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments including hair removal and photo rejuvenation. The technology utilizes a broad spectrum light source, with a general spectral range of 515 to 1200 nm. Various cutoff filters are commonly used to filter out lower frequencies and narrow this spectrum to target specific structures and chromophores. Because of the broad spectrum of the IPL light source they are unique, as opposed to lasers, in the ability to filter the light spectrum to target various chromophores in the skin

The Effects of alcohol on the Body

Masters in Clinical Psychology
Psychologist, Lucknow
The Effects of alcohol on the Body

When you drink alcohol, it's absorbed into your bloodstream and affects every part of your body. In the long term, this can put your health at serious risk.

When you drink alcohol, it's absorbed into your bloodstream and affects every part of your body. In the long term, this can put your health at serious risk.

Even a small amount of alcohol has an effect on your body. When you drink, alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream and distributed throughout your body. A tiny amount of alcohol exits your body in your urine and your breath.

You absorb alcohol more slowly if you eat, especially if the food is high in fat. However, if you drink more than your body can process, you'll get drunk. How quickly alcohol is metabolized depends on your size and gender, among other things.

Alcohol consumption causes physical and emotional changes that can do great harm to your body. The long-term effects of alcohol abuse are many, putting your health in serious jeopardy and endangering your life.

Excretory system

The excretory system is responsible for processing and eliminating waste products like alcohol from your body. As part of that process, the pancreas secretes digestive enzymes that combine with bile from the gallbladder to help digest food. The pancreas also helps regulate insulin and glucose.

Excessive alcohol use can cause the pancreas to produce toxic substances that interfere with proper functioning. The resulting inflammation is called pancreatitis, a serious problem that can destroy the pancreas. One of the most frequent causes of chronic pancreatitis is alcohol abuse.

The liver's job is to break down harmful substances, including alcohol. Excessive drinking can cause alcoholic hepatitis which can lead to the development of jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Chronic liver inflammation can lead to severe scarring known as cirrhosis. This formation of scar tissue can destroy the liver. When the liver fails to perform, toxic substances remain in your body. Liver disease is life threatening. Women are at higher risk for alcoholic liver disease than men because women's bodies tend to absorb more alcohol and take longer to process it.

When the pancreas and liver don't function properly, the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) rises. A damaged pancreas can cause the body to be unable to utilize sugar due to a lack of insulin, which can lead to hyperglycemia. Unbalanced blood sugar levels can be a dangerous problem, especially for people with diabetes. Alcohol abuse also raises your risk of liver cancer.

Central nervous system

One of the first signs of alcohol in your system is a change in behavior. Alcohol travels through the body easily. It can quickly reach many parts of your body, including your brain and other parts of your central nervous system. That can make it harder to talk, causing slurred speech, the telltale sign that someone who has had too much to drink. It can also affect coordination, interfering with balance and the ability to walk.

Drink too much, and your ability to think clearly is in trouble, as are your impulse control and ability to form memories. Over the long term, drinking can actually shrink the frontal lobes of your brain. Acute alcoholic withdrawal can lead to seizures and delirium. And severe alcoholism can progress to permanent brain damage, causing dementia.

Damage to your nervous system can result in pain, numbness, or abnormal sensations in your feet and hands. Alcoholism can cause a thiamine (vitamin b1) deficiency, which can result in involuntary rapid eye movements, weakness, or paralysis of the eye muscles.

Men and women metabolize alcohol differently. It generally takes less alcohol to affect women.

Over time, a heavy drinker can become physically and emotionally dependent on alcohol. It may be very difficult to gain control. Unlike most other common addictions, acute alcohol withdrawal can be life threatening. Cases of severe, chronic alcohol addiction often require medical detoxification.

When an alcoholic stops drinking abruptly, they're likely to experience symptoms of withdrawal, such as:

Nausea
Anxiety
Nervousness
Tremors

In severe cases, it may lead to confusion, hallucinations (delirium tremens), and seizures. Detoxification can take between two and seven days. Medications can help prevent side effects of withdrawal.

Digestive system

Alcohol can wreak havoc on your digestive system, from your mouth all the way to your colon. Even a single incidence of heavy drinking can injure parts of your digestive tract.

Alcohol abuse can damage the salivary glands and irritate the mouth and tongue, leading to gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. Heavy drinking can cause ulcers in the esophagus, acid reflux, and heartburn. Stomach ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis) can occur.

Inflammation of the pancreas interferes with its ability to aid digestion and regulate metabolism. Damage to the digestive system can cause gassiness, abdominal fullness, and diarrhea. It can also lead to dangerous internal bleeding, which may be due to ulcers, hemorrhoids, or esophageal varices caused by cirrhosis.

Alcohol makes it harder for your digestive tract to absorb nutrients and b vitamins or control bacteria. Alcoholics often suffer from malnutrition. Heavy drinkers face a higher risk of mouth, throat, and esophagus cancers. Moderate drinking in the presence of tobacco use can raise the risk of these upper gastrointestinal cancers. Colon cancer is also a risk. Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal may include nausea and vomiting.

Circulatory system

In some cases, a single episode of heavy drinking can cause trouble for your heart. It's even more likely your heart will suffer if you're a chronic drinker. Women who drink are at even higher risk of heart damage than men.

Circulatory system complications include:

Poisoning of the heart muscle cells (cardiomyopathy)
Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
High blood pressure
Stroke
Heart attack
Heart failure

People with diabetes have an increased risk of low blood sugar levels, especially if they use insulin. Deficiencies in vitamin b6, vitamin b12, thiamine, and folic acid can cause lowered blood counts. A common symptom of anemia is fatigue.

Sexual and reproductive health

Erectile dysfunction is a common side effect of alcohol abuse in men. It can also inhibit hormone production, affect testicular function, and cause infertility.

Excessive drinking can cause a woman to stop menstruating and become infertile. It also can increase her risk of miscarriage, premature delivery, and stillbirth. Alcohol has a huge effect on fetal development. A range of problems, called fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (fasd), can occur. Fasd symptoms, which include physical abnormalities, learning difficulties, and emotional problems can last a lifetime.

For women, the risk of breast cancer rises with alcohol use.

Skeletal and muscle systems

Long-term alcohol use makes it harder for your body to produce new bone. Drinking puts you at increased risk of osteoporosis (thinning bones) and bone fractures. Muscles become prone to weakness, cramps, and even atrophy.

Immune system

An immune system weakened by alcohol abuse has a hard time fighting off viruses, germs, and all types of illness. Heavy drinkers are more likely to get pneumonia or tuberculosis than the general population. Chronic alcohol use increases your risk of many forms of cancer.

All About Paleo Diet!

The paleo diet includes whole, unprocessed foods that resemble what they look like in nature.

Our ancestors were genetically the same as modern humans. They thrived eating such foods and were free of diseases like obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Several studies suggest that this diet can lead to significant weight loss (without calorie counting).

A paleo diet meal plan-

The basics

  1. Eat: meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, healthy fats and oils.
  2. Avoid: processed foods, sugar, soft drinks, grains, most dairy products, legumes, artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils, margarine and trans fats.
  3. Avoid these foods

Avoid these foods and ingredients:

  1. Sugar and high fructose corn syrup: soft drinks, fruit juices, table sugar, candy, pastries, ice cream and many others.
  2. Grains: includes breads and pastas, wheat, spelt, rye, barley, etc.
  3. Legumes: beans, lentils and many more.
  4. Dairy: avoid most dairy, especially low-fat (some versions of paleo do include full-fat dairy like butter and cheese).
  5. Vegetable oils: soybean oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, grapeseed oil, safflower oil and others.
  6. Trans fats: found in margarine and various processed foods. Usually referred to as “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” oils.
  7. Artificial sweeteners: aspartame, sucralose, cyclamates, saccharin, acesulfame potassium. Use natural sweeteners instead.
  8. Highly processed foods: everything labelled “diet” or “low-fat” or has many weird ingredients. Includes artificial meal replacements.

Foods to eat on the paleo diet-

Base your diet on these real, unprocessed paleo foods.

  1. Meats: beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, pork and others.
  2. Fish and seafood: salmon, trout, haddock, shrimp, shellfish, etc. Choose wild-caught if you can.
  3. Eggs: choose free-range, pastured or omega-3 enriched eggs.
  4. Vegetables: broccoli, kale, peppers, onions, carrots, tomatoes, etc.
  5. Fruits: apples, bananas, oranges, pears, avocados, strawberries, blueberries and more.
  6. Tubers: potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, turnips, etc.
  7. Nuts and seeds: almonds, macadamia nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and more.
  8. Healthy fats and oils: lard, tallow, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil and others.
  9. Salt and spices: sea salt, himalayan salt, garlic, turmeric, rosemary, etc.

Try to choose grass-fed, pasture raised and organic if you can afford it. If not, then just make sure to always go for the least processed option.

These are perfectly healthy in small amounts:

1. Wine: quality red wine is high in antioxidants and beneficial nutrients.
2. Dark chocolate: choose one that has 70% or higher cocoa content. Quality dark chocolate is very nutritious and extremely healthy.

What to drink when you’re thirsty -

Glass of water

  1. When it comes to hydration, water should be your go-to beverage.
  2. These aren’t exactly paleo, but most people drink them anyway:
  3. Tea is very healthy and loaded with antioxidants and various beneficial compounds. Green tea is best.
  4. Coffee is actually very high in antioxidants as well.

A sample paleo menu for one week -

Monday

1. Breakfast: eggs and vegetables, fried in coconut oil. One piece of fruit.
2. Lunch: chicken salad, with olive oil. Handful of nuts.
3. Dinner: burgers (no bun), fried in butter, with vegetables and some salsa.

Tuesday

  1. Breakfast: bacon and eggs, with a piece of fruit.
  2. Lunch: leftover burgers from the night before.
  3. Dinner: salmon, fried in butter, with vegetables.

Wednesday

  1. Breakfast: meat with vegetables (leftovers from night before).
  2. Lunch: sandwich in a lettuce leaf, with meat and fresh vegetables.
  3. Dinner: ground beef stir fry, with vegetables. Some berries.

Thursday

  1. Breakfast: eggs and a fruit.
  2. Lunch: leftover stir fry from the night before. A handful of nuts.
  3. Dinner: fried pork, with vegetables.

Friday

  1. Breakfast: eggs and vegetables, fried in coconut oil.
  2. Lunch: chicken salad with olive oil. Handful of nuts.
  3. Dinner: steak with vegetables and sweet potatoes.

Saturday

  1. Breakfast: bacon and eggs, with a piece of fruit.

Got married six months before trying to conceive but succeed
My wife is 32 and I am 38.
Treatment for infertility is started 1 year of marriage with regular intercourse. Ovulation occurs only one day in a full monthly cycle. So your body need more time to exactly match that timing with intercourse. Wait for another 6 months and try for spontaneous pregnancy. Once your one year is completed then only couple should start investigating both partners to find out the possible cause and treatment then follows.

How much toothpaste do we need for brushing???
1. What does the toothpaste do?

Toothpaste is an abrasive material which helps in mechanical action of toothbrush in removing plaque and debris from teeth and gums. Some medicated toothpastes are available which contain fluoride which helps in preventing tooth decay. Also toothpaste helps in removing bad breath and halitosis.
2. How much toothpaste do we need to brush our teeth?

For kids below 3 years of age just a “Smear” of toothpaste is needed.
For age above 3 years “Pea size” amount of tooth paste is enough.
3. Can we brush our teeth without toothpaste?

Major cleaning action is performed by toothbrush & toothpaste is only an adjunct to it. So, minimal amount of toothpaste is sufficient combined with a good brushing technique.
