How cancer occurs and how can we know that. What are the tips to identify and how we can cure that. Is there any cure for cancer?

Fellow Breast Surgery (MUHS), DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Oncologist, Aurangabad
Cancer is a manufacturing defect when new cells are being formed. But this defect has a unique capacity to defy the body's immunity and multiply uncontrollably. When our body's systems are constantly renewing themselves after wear and tear by creating new cells, sometimes somethings go wrong and a defective cell is formed. Body's immunity identifies a bad cell and removes it. But when this step is skipped they keep on growing first locally in some organ and then by spreading through either lymph channels or blood stream. Based on whether the cells are growing at one place or have spread to other places the symptoms change. Locally it is either due to any lump / swelling of crores of cancer cells or due to intereference of these cells in the organ's function. For example cancer in liver cannot be easily felt from above as swelling, but it can cause symptoms like indigestion or jaundice due to interference in liver's function of helping digestion. A breast cancer on the other hand usually presents as a lump in breast or axilla. The best way a person can do, is to identify and respect all the symptoms they have, which persist or are unusual. Some good habits like breast self examination are useful in identifying a symptomless early stage cancer. Cure is a word which is used with a very high caution. Cancer is defined by two most important characteristics - metastasis i. E. Spreading to other places different than site/organ of origin, and recurrence. Few cancer cells usually remain dormant after completion of initial treatment and then re grow after some time. There are many reason and factors helping it or acting against it. So cure is a word usually not used in cancer. And that's why patients are kept on strict surveillance after treatment for 5-10 years. Experts in medical fraternity believe that a patient surviving for more than 5 years may be called cured. But there are many patients who recur with same disease even after 5 years, 10 years even more than that. The goal of treatment of cancer is to improve survival and give best quality of life possible to each patient. In medicine always is always wrong and never is never right.

How to suspect one have cancer? Can CBC is helpful to understand the presence of cancer? Presence of pus cell, mucus, RBC and epithelial cells in urine/stool can be a symptoms of cancer? With bloating and pain in back near shoulder blade too.

You need to start exercising your jaw. There is an instrument called mouth opening prop which you could use. I've seen many patients getting good results with it.

Dear sir, most likely it would be benign tumour like lipoma or schwannoma, but difficult to say without clinical examination, so please get it checked clinically to be more sure.

Hey doctor, can you tell what is cancer and how does it occur. Is there any prevention method or cure for this disease?

MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
Genetic changes that cause cancer can be inherited from our parents. They can also arise during a person’s lifetime as a result of errors that occur as cells divide or because of damage to DNA caused by certain environmental exposures. Cancer-causing environmental exposures include substances, such as the chemicals in tobacco smoke, and radiation, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun. no prevention. thanks

Cancer Cells Manipulate Body s Circadian Clock To Survive, Study Shows!

MBBS
General Physician, Fatehabad
Cancer Cells Manipulate Body s Circadian Clock To Survive, Study Shows!

Cancer cells use Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) to slow protein synthesis when needed, in order to, suppress body’s circadian clock, which enables them to survive in conditions that would kill normal cells, states a research conducted by the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in the US.

Circadian clock of the body is the 24-hour physiological process cycle and is important in determining the sleeping and feeding patterns of human beings.

“What a tumor cell is doing is taking a pathway that is already in the cell and using it to its advantage,” said J Alan Diehl, senior researcher on the paper published in the journal Nature Cell Biology.

My mother in law is 80. She has recently been operated for breast cancer her breast is removed. Drs have suggested chemo therapy but she is undergoing homeopathy treatment. Is it ok?

MS - General Surgery
Oncologist, Ludhiana
If she is not fit for chemotherapy then hormone treatment can be considered at this age. Hormone treatment is safe and without any major side effect. Hormone treatment is effective only if er and pgr are positive.

Who is the best doctor and hospital for treatment of breast cancer in Chandigarh ? Should one take the treatment in chd or go to Delhi ?

MBBS, MD - Medicine, MD - Oncology, Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (FRSTM & H)
Oncologist, Delhi
Dear, in spite of many modalities available treatment of breast cancer is controversial. Before hand take the advice of a senior doctor of the field for the best possible treatment. The younger present day doctors will advise you first the removal of the breast when it has been seen that removal of the breast is not necessary.

Sir, My uncle is suffering with cancer and he is unable to take food directly from mouth. So, recently he got operated and put hole on the left side of the stomach. We are thinking of put stunt in the neck so that he can swallow the food. But we don't know where to go to the hospital where this treatment is available. Can I get any suggestions as early as possible because his condition is serious. The surgery would be within a budget as we are very poor farmers.

If stent was feasible then why was not it done before doing the Feeding gastrostomy? If he is incurable and Gastrostomy has already been done and you are not affording for surgery, I would advise not to go for the stenting as it is a costly intervention. I am presuming it's an advanced inoperable or metastatic disease, hence a Gastrostomy was done. If it is a locally advanced disease then we recommend Neoadjuvant chemoradiation or neoadjuvant chemotherapy and then the patient can undergo surgery. Stenting is preferred to Gastrostomy, but is costly. If you want to share the reports and discuss further management, then you are welcome to contact me directly.
