What are symptoms of diabetes? What are types of diabetes? Which is best option to cure it insulin or medicine?
Symptoms of Diabetes 1. Excessive Thirst 2. Frequency of urination especially in night 3. Excessive Hunger 4. Fatigue 5. Blurring Of Vision, irritability, tingling and numbness in hand/feet, fatigue 6. Recurrent boil/fungal infection, Sores or cuts that won’t heal Cause- There are two types of Diabetes. Type 1 (insulin dependent) and Type 2 (non insulin dependent) Type-1 Diabetes A) It is an auto immune disease that attacks beta cell of pancreas, leading to inadequate insulin production which increase blood sugar B) affects5% of population mostly younger age group c) Diagnosis- blood test for auto antibody which destroys beta cell of pancreas, presence of ketone in blood (a by product from break down of fat in urine). D) Due to lack of insulin sugar is not utilised by cell for energy. Body fat breaks down as an alternate source of energy which produces high level of ketone in blood)). Not enough insulin is produced. Symptoms similar to type 2 Diabetes mellitus Type-2 cause (affects elderly people) A) Heredity, obesity, stress, B) lack of exercise, Lack of diet control, sedentary life style. In Type 2 cells can not use insulin properly. Hence oral preparations are given.

HYPOTHYROIDISM OR MYXOEDEMA [HYPOTHYROID]
HYPOTHYROIDISM OR MYXOEDEMA [HYPOTHYROID]

HYPOTHYROIDISM / MYXOEDEMA
Hypothyroidism is a clinical condition, which results from deficiency of thyroid hormones.
Hypothyroidism with deposition of mucinous substance in subcutaneous tissues is known as ‘myxoedema`.

CAUSES:
• Primary thyroid gland involvement.
• Lack of pituitary TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone).
• Hypothalamic deficiency of TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone).
• Autoimmune thyroiditis.
• Severe iodine deficiency.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS:
• Slowing down of mental and physical functions of the body.
• Easy fatigability and tiredness.
Sleepiness.
Body ache.
• Puffiness of face.
• Edema feet.
• Weight gain.
• Increased sensitivity to cold.
• Dryness of skin.
• Brittle nails.
Constipation.
Hair fall.
Hoarseness of voice.
Hearing loss.
• Tendency for repeated infections.
Muscle cramps.
Shortness of breath.
Anemia.
• Mood swings.
Forgetfulness.
• Slow speech.
Infertility.
• Menorrhagia (profuse menses).
• Occasionally rise in blood pressure.

DIETARY MANAGEMENT:
Avoid:
• Avoid goitrogens (food that blocks the utilization of iodine): turnips, cabbage, mustard, cassava root, soybeans, peanuts, pine nuts and millets. Cooking usually inactivates goitrogens.

CONSUME:
• Increase consumption of iodine, it is an important building block of thyroid hormone:
– Sea food, meat, milk and milk, sea plants- kelp, dulse (vegetable sea food) and Japanese sea vegetables. Plants grown in iodine rich soils are also good source of iodine.
– Iodized salt is a primary source of iodine.
• Increase consumption of copper, selenium and zinc as these minerals are essential for normal thyroid hormone production and metabolism.
• Foods rich in copper:
– Meat gelatin, eggs, yeast, lamb; pork; pheasant quail; duck; goose; squid; salmon; organ meats.
– Soy and soy products, nuts and seeds, beans, legumes; almonds, broccoli, garlic; bran breads and cereals; sea plants and mushrooms.
– Dried beans - soy beans, lima beans, baked beans, dried peas; lentils; barley.
– Dried fruits including raisins, dates, prunes, avocado, Chocolate.
– Some amount of cooper is obtained from cooking in copper vessels.
• Foods rich in selenium:
– Grains, Brazil nuts, garlic, wheat germ and brewer`s yeast, fish, shellfish, eggs, red meat, chicken and liver.
• Food rich in zinc: Good dietary sources of zinc include seafood (especially oysters), beef, oatmeal, chicken, liver, spinach, nuts and seeds.
– Meat, poultry and milk, shell fish, crab, shrimp and sea plants etc.
– Plant foods are low in zinc, Whole wheat grains provide good amount of zinc.
• Increase consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids, one of the PUFA`s (poly unsaturated fatty acids), as it also contributes to normal thyroid function: Fish and fish oils provide excellent forms of omega-3s as well as vitamin A, which improves thyroid receptor binding and thyroid hormone activity. Flax / linseed oil is the richest source of PUFA`s. Other oils that contain PUFA`s are safflower oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, maize oil, sesame oil, rich bran oil, ground nut oil, mustard oil and olive oil.
• Increase consumption of proteins - tyrosine, an amino acid is a precursor for making thyroid hormone :
– Milk and milk products, eggs (is the richest source), Flesh food: meat, fish, and poultry.
– Nuts and oilseeds, pulses, cereals.
• Mild to moderate exercise is advisable, exercise stimulates thyroid gland function.
• Practise yoga, helps in increasing tissue sensitivity to thyroid hormone.

CONSULT PHYSICIAN:
• If myxoedema presents with complications like cardiac failure or coma consult your physician immediately. Immediate medical attention is necessary.

Pregnancy and diabetes: Why lifestyle counts

Pregnancy and diabetes presents unique challenges. Consider the goal ? tight blood sugar control ? and what you can do to achieve it.

When you have diabetes ? either type 1 or type 2 ? pregnancy presents unique challenges. Naturally, you're concerned about the effect diabetes might have on your health and your baby's health. There's much you can do to promote a healthy pregnancy, however. Here's what you need to know about pregnancy and diabetes ? and delivering a healthy baby.

Pregnancy and diabetes:
Your diabetes health care team likely includes an endocrinologist or other diabetes specialist, a diabetes educator and a registered dietitian. As your pregnancy progresses, your health care team can help you manage your blood sugar level and adjust your diabetes treatment plan as needed.

The goal: Tight blood sugar control

Controlling your blood sugar level before and during pregnancy is the best way to prevent diabetes complications. Good blood sugar control during pregnancy can:

Reduce the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. Good blood sugar control reduces the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth ? primary concerns for pregnancy and diabetes.
Reduce the risk of premature birth. The better your blood sugar control, the less likely you are to go into preterm labor.
Reduce the risk of birth defects. Good blood sugar control during early pregnancy greatly reduces your baby's risk of birth defects, particularly those affecting the brain, spine and heart.
Reduce the risk of excess fetal growth. If you have poor blood sugar control, extra glucose can cross the placenta. This triggers your baby's pancreas to make extra insulin, which can cause your baby to grow too large (macrosomia). A large baby makes vaginal delivery difficult and puts the baby at risk of injury during birth.
Prevent complications for mom. Good blood sugar control reduces the risk of high blood pressure, preeclampsia ? which is high blood pressure that begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy ? and other potentially serious pregnancy complications.
Prevent complications for baby. Sometimes babies of mothers who have diabetes develop low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) shortly after birth because their own insulin production is too high. Good blood sugar control can help promote a healthy blood sugar level for your baby, as well as healthy levels of calcium and magnesium in the blood. Good blood sugar control also helps prevent a yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes (jaundice) after birth.

I am managing my diabetes based on the sugar reading test done at home with home test kit. I would like to know which test reading is the most important to decide whether diabetes is in control? Is it the fasting/post postprandial reading. How often should the test be repeated to make sure my diabetes is under control The reading currently is 100mg/dl and 145mg/dl for fasting and postprandial.

Dear sir, greetings for the day. Thanks for your query at this platform. I will try my level best to help you. It is great that you are conscious regarding your diabetes and managing it. Some of my suggestions in managing your diabetes will be 1. Never skip any meal. Try to eat in smaller portions frequently. 2. Avoid taking more that 2 t spoon of oil per day 3. Try to have more of protein rich food like dal, beans etc. 4. Do yoga asanas everyday for better management of diabetes. 5. Have lots of fruits and vegetables hope this will help you.
