My mom is severally effected from uric acid. What precautions should be taken to lesseR this acid? What should she avoid to eat?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
The first thing you should do is to eat foods that are high in fiber, this is because fiber rich foods absorb uric acid from the blood. Your kidneys then'throw' out the excess uric acid. Try to eat oatmeal, spinach, cauliflowers and isabgol in milk if possible. Please use olive oil to cook your food. Kindly avoid vegetable oils because they become unhealthy when heated twice. This leads to rancid fat in the body. These destroy vitamin e, that in turn controls uric acid levels. Olive oil also curbs uric acid by itself. Vitamin c chewable tablets taken 500mg daily lower uric acid levels within 4 to 8 weeks. Try to stop intake of sweets, cakes and pastries. Saturated fats are bad for you. Many fruits have got potent anti-oxidant properties, like celery seeds, grapes and tomatoes, and these prevent harmful toxins from attacking your organs - releasing uric acid.

Sadique, Losing weight with thyroid disorder and taking contraceptive pills is real challenge. The dietary advise, which does not take into account these factors will surely not work for you. Eating a low calorie food or low fat food will surely be not very effective for you. What you need to do is consult someone who can help you holitically - proper nutrition, right kind of exercise (just few min a day), stress management and sleep improvement. Making changes in all 4 aspect, will help bring the underlying hormonal disturbances under proper control and you will be able to find more energy, and more excitement into your life... weight loss will be just the byproduct! best wishes.

From morning 7 to 2 in the afternoon I am on my feet doing household chores including taking my dog out for half an hour daily. As a result I can feel the beginning stages of a corn on my left sole below the second and third toes. Being a diabetic, I am a little worried. How can I remove the corn before it fully develops?

Do not try to remove it yourself. Get it removed from the doctor. Its a simple and painless procedure where the doctor will scrape the corn out and provide you a cream and footwear to prevent the corn from recurring.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Sir very good morning sir my father have sugar so please Tell me what to eating so please Tell me sir.
Dear lybrate user, one of the major nutritional substance required for human body is carbohydrate. We take carbohydrate in the form of rice, wheat, sugar etc. The complex molecules of carbohydrate are broken down into simple glucose molecules during digestion & released in the blood stream to be absorbed by the muscle cells. Insulin hormone plays a vital role in the absorption of the glucose molecules by the muscle cells. In abnormal conditions, either due to less production of insulin or due to resistance to insulin, the process of absorption of glucose by the muscles comes to a stand still. The glucose molecules remains in the blood stream which results in the increase in the blood sugar level. This abnormal condition is clinically known as diabetes mellitus. Once a patient is diagnosed with diabetes he has to take regular medicine to keep his blood sugar level within normal limits. Take homoeopathic mother tincture gymnemna sylvestra q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. Also you need to walk at least 1 hour daily without any interval. Also you need to take a low carbohydrate rich diet.

How to cure diabetic?

Pediatrician,
There is no cure for diabetes as of today in medical science. What we can do is control the disease so that the complications can be minimized. Drugs used for that are tailored to each patient's needs.

Every diabetic should get heart, eyes, kidneys tested regularly. Good to know that heart tests are normal. Do not give sleeping tablets which can be addictive like alprazolam. Give her a tablet of valium 5 mg but do tell your doctor about it,

DNB (Endocrinology), MD - General Medicine, MBBS

your cousin is having hypothyroidism. Most cases are due to autoimmune disease which means life long treatment has to be taken. But it doesn't cause a problem if she is regularly taking medicine. Instead she should be more worried for type 1 diabetes as you have mentioned in conditions.

Is it advisable to to consume honey when Blood/Urine Sugar levels are slightly on the higher side?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Is it advisable to to consume honey when Blood/Urine Sugar levels are slightly on the higher side?
Mr. Vijayendra, if one is diabetic, then honey is not advisable. Again it depends on the quantity that one is talking about. Honey contains mainly fructose, which gets rapidly converted to triglycerides and can put a load on liver. Honey also has glucose (50% glucose, 50 % fructose like sucrose), so it also increases blood sugar rapidly. It may be taken in small quantity only when your blood sugar is in very good control. But in my sincere opinion, I would avoid it. Thanks for the question.

Enlarged fatty liver with diabetes and high alcohol consumption will lead to liver failure sooner than you can imagine. So first, get a handle on the situation by cutting your alcohol consumption. Alcohol is going to stress out your liver and its going to become more and more enlarged and then will shrink itself to cirrhosis. You are 36 years- there is still a lot in your hands to change. Sadly, once liver failure will set in- it will be point of no return.

Mr. Lybrate-user, the sugar levels mentioned (145 - 100 mg), are those fasting or pp? further it is not clear when you say 145 to 100 mg. Better to mention exact fasting, pp levels and hba1c%. That will give a clear idea of severity of diabetes. In diabetes a person should avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, other bakery items, items made out of maida and other refined flour. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits. Always use whole grain flour for chapati and roti. For achieving good control fasting glucose should be closer to 100 mg, pp 150 to 160 mg/100 ml & hba1c% <7. Thanks.
