Mr. Lybrate-user, feeling sleepy need not be related to diabetes. But some times undetected diabetes can lead to a considerable unexplained tiredness and fatigue. So it is better if you get a blod test done like fasting and pp sugar levels. That will confirm whether there is any problem existing. Thanks for the question.

For decades I was a rice eater and since two months, I have switched over to wheat rava[coarse] eaten in the same way as rice with sambar, rasam and buttermilk. Besides my morning breakfast comprises oats mixed with 1 to 1.5 tsp of jaggery and milk. I have stopped eating ghee, oily products except small qty. Oil used in making curry, sambar and rasam, outside foods, etc. Am I still open to risk of contracting diabetes and/or other health disorders? is jaggery better than sugar? please advice. Thanks doctor.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
You don't need to switch over to a routine that is different from what you have grown up eating. Avoiding rice and ghee and your traditional breakfast foods is not the way to good health. The reason for your health being affected is not your traditional foods but the lack of discipline, stress, inactivity and intake of junk and packeted foods. Rice is easy to digest than wheat or other cereals and your body us used to it so go for your traditional unpolished rice in moderation and even ghee is good for health because fat is needed by your body even to manage sugar levels. Organic jaggery is fine to take. So don't demonise the traditional foods and stick to it. Try to look into other aspects of your lifestyle in order to maintain good health and avoid lifestyle disorders.

Please suggest diet chart (for Indian) to maintain sugar level normal for a sugar patient of 57 years old.
Mr., to suggest a dietary plan, all the information like fasting, pp sugar levels hba1c%, extent of daily exercise is needed. Because diet has to be based on blood sugar levels, ideal body weight, and amount of daily exercise and present dietary habits. However, avoid sweets completely, avoid deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks (colas), sweet corn syrup containing products, highly processed foods and high fat containing milk products. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (100 g a day). Use whole grain products, avoid refined flour like maida and foods made out of it. Total caloric intake should e about 1700 calories per day. Thanks for the question.

Lybrate-userji, it appears you have t1 diabetes, (if the age is 14 years), in that case only drug that can be used to control blood glucose is insulin injection. No other drugs are given for t1 diabetes patients. You need to increase the dose of insulin injections both in the morning and night.

Herbal tea with ginger is beneficial for thyroid functioning. In fact, beverages including coffee, tea, carbonated drinks and alcohols should be avoided by patients afflicted with thyroid disorders. In its place herbal tea may be an alternative option. Application of watercress's paste on the enlarged neck is also an effective remedy.

You can take Nutrient-rich foods that improve your health may also benefit your thyroid gland, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables more plenty of water: Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and other foods rich in antioxidants can improve overall health and benefit the thyroid gland. Eating foods high in B vitamins, like whole grains, may also help. Selenium: Tiny amounts of selenium are needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly. Eating selenium-rich foods, such as sunflower seeds or Brazil nuts, can be beneficial. Tyrosine: This amino acid is used by the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4. Taking a supplement may help, avoid alcohl if you take.

Mr. Lybrate-user, there could be quite a few reasons for not getting proper blood sugar control including diet regulation, amount of exercise or no exercise and dosage adjustments in relation to food intake. One thing can be done is first try and reduce fasting blood glucose. This can be done by monitoring it daily and reaching a target level of 100 to 110 mg. The night dose of insulin glargine can be increased by 2 units every 2 to 3 days, till fasting target is reached and then maintained. Later you can target pp sugar level. This way you should be able to control sugar level better. Recently there are a few new options also made available which can be considered to reduce the blood glucose. Plus give a close look at your diet control also increase daily extent of exercise. These things will help in reaching desired goals.

Your blood sugar levels r normal. No need to worry but sgpt is increased means that yr liver is not properly functioning. So 1. Avoid overeating 2. Avoid excessive milk products like cheese, butter and ghee 3. Avoid fast food, spicy and fried food 4. Avoid alcohol if you you're taking 5. Avoid non veg 6. Take nutritious homemade diet.

What is the symptoms of diabetes in 3 year old kids? Does dark circle around the eyes is the symptom of diabetes?
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The symptoms of T1 diabetes are Increased thirst and frequent urination. Excess sugar building up in your child's bloodstream pulls fluid from tissues. Extreme hunger, Weight loss, Fatigue, Irritability or behavior changes, Fruity-smelling breath, Blurred vision & Yeast infection. But best is do a blood test and check the glucose level, that will clear the doubt. Thanks.

Hello lybrate-user, First of all you don't need to be so anxious and stressed. Blood glucose values generally increase after meals peaking at 1 hour and then slowly decline to less than 140 mg/dl by 2 hours. For the diagnosis of diabetes, go for two tests 1. Hba1c 2. Blood glucose in fasting state and after taking 75 gms glucose (GTT) There is a substantial probability that both tests will be normal. Don't stress yourself unnecessarily. Do these two simple test to clear the confusion. At the moment there is nothing to say that you have Diabetes. Gud luck!
