My wife is taking medicine for hypertension (telmisat AM) & for hypo thyroid, thyroxine 50 mg. Further she had mastectomy of Lt breast and is taking tamoxefen since 3 years. Her problem is sleeplessness at night. Why she is not having sleep at night time? Is it because of all the issues above mentioned?

Hello, tamoxifen eventhough well tolerated, can cause many side effects. One of those is difficulty in getting sleep. So it is possible that her sleep disturbance is due that drug. One way to over come this is to exercise regularly for about an hour, brisk walking can be a good option. Because of regular exercise body will need better rest and sleep may be induced faster. She should also learn ways to relax through positive suggestions which can also help in inducing sleep. Soothing music like classical (hindustani) santur or basuri can also help. Thanks.

Cold and breathing problem is not related to thyroid. That is mostly due to the weather conditions. Your hairfall will stop if your thyroid levels become normal with medications. But for hair regrowth you need to put more efforts. Use herbal oils for scalp massage, three times a week. Use a mild shampoo for hair wash. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to promote hair regrowth. Amla/gooseberry is a excellent hair tone. You can have amla candies or amla juice everyday.

Never stop. Continue. Get levels checked again on fasting every 4-6 weeks until levels are normal. For that you may need dose titration.

Hi when we have hypo thyrodism can we have spinach in our diet? As it is rich in protein?

Hi when we have hypo thyrodism can we have spinach in our diet? As it is rich in protein?
Lybrate-user, spinach is not very rich in protein, a small cup of spinach gives about 1 g of protein. Raw vegetables contain fiber, vitamins (b complex, vit c etc) and some protein and fat. Water content is very high. In hypothyroidism it can be consumed. Thanks.

1. If you take care of diet, do daily exercise, and bring your weight down, you can bring down sugar levels and lead a healthy life. >> >> Avoid 3 big meals. Instead take small mini meals every 2/3 hours. Take green vegetables/salad with every minimeal..>> Eat whole grain food/grains like ragi, wheat, jowar, barley, instead of refined grains like maida/ sooji/ white bread, white rice etc.>> Avoid all forms of simple sugars like Colas, juices, sweets, cakes, biscuits, pizzas, noodles etc..>> Eat fruits  with low/medium GI index like apple, guava, mosambi, orange.  .>> Do at least 30-45 mins of exercise everyday. Walk for 10 mins after every meal..>> These steps can help reduce sugar levels.

What are the types of diabetes, What is the severity, whether it gives fatal cause? What are the remedies?
One should know only three types Type I (Insulin Dependent) Type II (Mostly controlled without Insulin) and Gestational (Only during pregnancy and mostly temporary) Although no specific complaints initially Diabetes if not controlled can cause many complications to vital organs and this may result in serious problem. There is no known scientific cure for Diabetes. But must be kept under control which is possible under any good doctor.

My husband was a thyroid cancer patient (pappilary carcinoma). He was undergone thyroid gland removal surgery on 2013 september. And then radiation two times for the complete removal of the gland parts which cant be done by surgery. Now his doctor says he has completely recovered and the scanning report also shows this. He is fine now. Some days ago I had read a story of another cancer patient through facebook. She had lymph node cancer and doctor suggested her chemotherapy. She says that she recommend patients radiation not to be done. Radiation may cause some other cancer in the future. Is this true? I m tensed after reading this. My husband had undergone radiation treatment two time in regional cancer centre, trivandrum. Is there any chance to cause some other cancer in future due to radiation?

First of all I want you to understand that thyroid cancers are not like other cancers in the head and neck are and have best prognosis among all cancers I think already treatment is done for your husband which usually includes thyroidectomy and post operative radio iodine ablation. Chances of recurrence are very very minimal with 20 year survival rate of more than 90 percent in other words very rarely we see patient of papillary carcinoma of thyroid dying because of papillary carcinoma of thyroid. So you need not worry and go for regular follow up as per your doctors instructions.

I am a diabetic patient from 8 years. What is my routine diet for the minimize for diabetic control.

M.sc dietitics and food service management, Diabetes educator

I am a diabetic patient from 8 years. What is my routine diet for the minimize for diabetic control.
Diet control and exercise are equally important for diabetes person. Diet high in protein for the health of diabetes because it supplies the essential amino acids needed for tissue repair. Pulsese are rich in protein and fibre. Take lukewarm water with half spoon methidana powder in the morning. Complex carbohydrates and fibre should be included in diet. You should avoid fasting and feasting. Timely and balanced diet is as important as regular medicine intake to control diabetes. Use sufficient amount of given onion, garlic, coriander, lemon, greenchilli, black paper, fenugreek seeds, cinnamon, bay leaves in food items. No long gapes and skipping of meals. Chapatis of bran flour (unrefined) is given to diabetes patients and to increase the nutritional value add gram and soyabean flour to it.

Am 29 years old having baby of 5 months old. Before pregnancy I didn't have thyroid now My TSH level is 34. Am using thyronorm 75 mcg. Is it common r severe. Which foods to be avoided for thyroid as am a c-sec mom. Is it hypo r hyper.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Thanks for the query. Increased TSH above 10 mU/L is known as Hypothyroidism. It needs to be treated by taking adequate quantity of levothyroxine. When one is on treatment with adequate dose, TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. Then only all the symptoms are in check. You should avoid soy beans and soy containing foods. Other items to be restricted include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard, radish, peanuts and coffee. Should use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. Avoid bakery items and foods made from maida. Thanks.
