Today I checked my blood sugar on fasting and the result lt is 161mg/dl. Please advise should i take drugs ?

MBBS
General Physician, Indore
Hello, you first of all start with physical workout and morning walk along with sugar restriction. This will improve the sugar levels. And only one reading is not enough to diagnose you diabetic and start medications. You have to check FASTING , PPBS, HBA1C LEVELS first. Then only can proceed for treatment. At the first stage is lifestyle modifications is must.

Am a 75 yrs male and having uric acid problem from middle age. Was on Zyloric 100 medication for nearly 20 yrs and generally the uric acid level remained below 5.5. However my doctor prescribed Ubexa 40 for the last couple of yrs as the level had started to be 6.5. My question is Ubexa 40 preferable to Zyloric 100 in my case? Request advice.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Faridabad
A high uric acid level can be caused when your body either produces too much uric acid or your kidneys don't eliminate uric acid rapidly enough. A high uric acid level may cause increasingly frequent attacks of gout, or it may never cause problems. A high uric acid level may also cause some people to develop kidney stones or kidney failure. And some people with a high uric acid level also develop high blood pressure, heart disease or chronic kidney disease, but it's often unclear whether this is a direct cause or merely an early warning sign of these conditions. Factors that may cause a high uric acid level in your blood include: Diuretic medications (water pills),Drinking too much alcohol,Genetics (inherited tendencies),hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid),Immune-suppressing drugs,Niacin, or vitamin B-3, obesity, psoriasis, Purine-rich diet — organ meat, game meat, anchovies, herring, gravy, dried beans, driedpeas, mushrooms and other foods Renal insufficiency — inability of the kidneys to filter waste Tumor lysis syndrome — a rapid release of cells into the blood caused by certain cancers or by chemotherapy for those cancers,Also, you may be monitored for high uric acid levels when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. Avoid protein diets, avoid more milk products. bad habits , fast food/fat/oily,salty foods. Coffee, smoking, alcohol intake. Non-veg., take whole grain, oats, green veg.,plenty of water in day time, 1 glass of water at night before bed. Take tab. Zyloric 100 mg once a day. Tab. Ulracet sos for pain in joints.

Infertility in Women - Know The Top 3 Reasons Behind It!

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology)
Gynaecologist, Bangalore
Infertility in Women - Know The Top 3 Reasons Behind It!

The inability to conceive after indulging in unprotected sex is known as infertility. It can also be referred to the biological incapability of a male to cause the conception or a woman being unable to carry the pregnancy for full-term. Research has shown that female problems contribute to over half of all the infertility cases while a majority of the other causes include sperm disorders.

Treatment of infertility depends on:

  1. Cause of Infertility
  2. Duration of Infertility
  3. Age of both partners
  4. Personal preferences

Causes:
Causes of infertility in women include:
1. Ovulation disorders: This is regarded as the most common cause of infertility in women. The disorders can be caused due to the following

  • Premature ovarian failure
  • PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)
  • Poor egg quality
  • Hyperprolactinemia
  • Overactive or Underactive thyroid gland
  • Chronic conditions like cancer or AIDS.

2. Problems in fallopian tubes or uterus: Abnormalities in the uterus or fallopian tubes render the woman incapable of conceiving naturally. This might be due to:

  • Submucosal fibroids
  • Surgery
  • Endometriosis
  • Previous sterilization treatment

3. Medications: There is a possibility that treatment will cure infertility. Examples include NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. Treatment of infertility might involve a significant amount of psychological, physical, temporal and financial commitments. In men, treatment is done to treat lack of healthy sperm or general sexual problems. The treatments include:

  1. Medications
  2. Surgery
  3. Change in lifestyle
  4. Sperm retrieval

Even though it is possible to restore fertility in women using only one or two therapies, a number of treatments might be required before conception is possible. Some of these treatments include:

  1. Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  2. Stimulation of ovulation with fertility drugs
  3. Surgery to restore fertility

In situations where pregnancy does not happen spontaneously, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) can be used by couples to achieve pregnancy. It is a form of fertility treatment which involves the handling of sperm and egg. The entire ART team consists of psychologists, physicians, embryologists, nurses and lab technicians.

One common ART technique is In vitro fertilization (IVF). It is a process where an egg and sperms are manually combined in a laboratory dish, followed by transfer of embryo to the uterus. Some aspects involved in an IVF cycle are:

  1. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
  2. Assisted hatching
  3. Donor eggs or sperm
  4. Gestational carrier

Some complications that may occur during the treatment of infertility are:

  1. Multiple pregnancy
  2. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

I am 40 year old male and a diabetic patient what can I do to control sugar level in addition to medication. How can I manage my blood pressure level?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello, 1. take Karela jamun ras from SWADESHI Brand. 2. Powdered cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin activity. It contains bioactive components that can help prevent and fight diabetes. 3. Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Drink the water along with the seeds in the morning on an empty stomach. Follow this remedy without fail for a few months to bring down your glucose level. Another option is to eat two tablespoons of powdered fenugreek seeds daily with milk. Along with blood pressure medication follow the below tips to manage it to normal range. Drink plenty of liquids and cut down your fat, salt and sugar intake. go for a morning walk daily at least for 30 minutes. Take a sound sleep and try to avoid anger. Revert after 15 days with feedback.

Hi doctor, m 24 years old female n I am suffering from hypothyroidism .I m hvng thyrox table dose of 75 mg n its going normal now. Is it possible to reduce the dose of this medicine. I was taking 150 mg before which got reduced constantly after blood test. Can you please recommend some methods to promote iodine naturally? N reduce the dose of the medicine.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
lybrate-user, Since no TSH value is mentioned, I have no way to comment or suggest change in dosage. Hypothyroidism is thyroxine deficiency disorder, so only option is to take thyroxine supplement on daily basis. Taking extra iodine is not going to help as your thyroid gland itself is unable to synthesise the hormone. Thanks.

We want to take the IME-9 tabs as we were told they ayush 82 research product should we start taking this tab please let us know? I too am suffering from I take 1 tab metmorfin and losakind H 1 Tab for BP Itoo wish to take this medicine to kindly advice as I have bought 4 boxes /60tabs of the product to try out.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, If your wife's blood glucose control is good then there is really no need to take any other medicine than the present treatment. Unfortunately the propganda being made about so called research product is a big hoax. That product is just a combination of some herbal ingredients based on ancient texts. The clinical trials are also not well conducted. In Ayurveda or other alternate medical practices there is really no drug treatment available for diabetes, even though a lot of claims are made including curing of the condition. If any one had actually found out a cure for diabetes he or she would get a Nobel prize. If you want to take IME - (tablet, do not stop current treatment, that tablet can be added as a supportive therapy. Thanks.

From what u have sent it looks like u have prediabetes. Are u sure u taking the meds regularly? Such high BP in young age is not good for u in the long run. U may need some dose adjustment and also to find the cause of ur high BP. We need to look for the secondary causes of Hypertension since you are very young. You need a thorough evaluation - both clinical and biochemical. Kindly do it at the earliest.

Sir, my sugar level is 150 before breakfast and 195 after breakfast Currently I am taking gluconorm-G 2 forte (1 tablet a day) My age is 51.

MBBS, CCEBDM

Hi Your blood sugars are marginally on the higher side. Normal blood sugar values: FBS: 80-120 mg/dl After measl: 140-180 mg/dl I want you to follow a strict diet pattern like: Eat small meals every 2-3 hours. Avoid eating too much carbohydrates for breakfast and dinner. Have an early dinner. Do not have fruits in excess and have them only as snack. Eat lot of proteins, avoid junk food, fried foods, sugary foods, fruit juices. Exercise regularly. These if followed will reduce your blood sugar without the need for increasing your mediciations.

Quest" What is the initial symptoms of diabetes? How can be people be alerted from such type of diseases.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr Sonu, Diabetes mellitus usually does not produce any symptoms, that is the reason many people do not come to know that they have diabetes. When fully developed it can cause excess urination, excess hunger, excess thirst, unexplained weight loss and tiredness. Only way detect diabetes is to do a blood sugar level check.
