Dear lybrate-user, since you have high sugar you should develop strict dietary habits. Restrict your intake of sweet food items like cakes, mithai, chocolates, ice cream. Increase your intake of high fibre foods like fruits (apples, pears, kiwi), veg more of green leafy ones, have daily a cup of beans, a handful of dry fruits as all these contain high fibre & are very beneficial in controlling blood sugar &also bodyweight. Also instead of taking three large meals in a day take five to six small ones like include a snack after every 3 hrs like a fruit or yoghurt. Be particular about the food timing.

Lybrate-user during pregnancy the level of sugar normally goes high and that is common feature and it is called as gestational diabetes as it is restricted to pregnancy event and it goes off the moment to finish the pregnancy in your case you already finished this episode, now you are at an average risk of genetic transformation of diabetes as your father had. If you maintain good routine and balance with daily exercise, you will maintain sugar levels well in control. All my best wishes.

For diabetes follow a diet low in carbohydrate, low in fat and high in fibre. Avoid bakery products. Avoid too much rice and potato. Avoid fried stuff. Avoid chocolate, cakes, ice cream, soft drinks and fruit juices. Eat lots of vegetables. Walk for at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week. Medicine will depend upon your blood reports.

Mr. lybrate-user, It is good to know that you are having good blood glucose control. It is very important to maintain blood glucose level in the following fashion: FBS closer to 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8, then one can prevent or postpone the long term complications of diabetes. Since you have been having diabetes for over 12 years it is better to get your eyes checked to rule out any involvement of retina, as diabetes tends to affect retinal blood vessels. Thanks.

Diabetes: Know About It to Better Control It

Diabetes: Know About It to Better Control It

Diabetes is usually associated with the insulin and glucose absorption of the body. This disease can be of several types and is often referred to as Diabetes Mellitus. It is basically a digestive disorder where the body is not able to transport the glucose absorbed from the food to the cells, due to a lack of proper insulin production. This makes the blood sugar level rise. This is a long term disease that involves metabolism and an imbalance in the blood sugar levels of the body. While type 2 diabetes is the most common with 90% of all cases suffering from this type, type 1 affects roughly 10% of the diabetes patients.

Read on to know more about diabetes so that you can control it better:

Type 1 Diabetes: In this kind of diabetes, the body does not produce sufficient insulin, which makes it produce symptoms like increased thirst, frequent urination, blurry vision due to changes in the lens of the eyes and vomiting as well as deep breathing for patients who have reached a very advanced or severe stage. The best treatment plan for this kind of diabetes includes tweaking one's diet to cut out excess fat, salt and sugar. Further, the patient will have to ensure that the glucose levels are monitored and regulated with insulin injections and regular blood tests.

Type 2 Diabetes: When the cells of the body do not react appropriately to insulin it can lead to malfunction. This is a progressive disease that is known to get worse with the passage of time. Patients suffering from this disease usually have to take insulin tablets on a daily basis. The symptoms include fatigue, blurred vision and excessive hunger. The best treatment is to exercise regularly and follow a healthy diet plan. This disease can also increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other serious ailments.

Gestational Diabetes: This kind of diabetes affects expecting mothers. If the pregnant patient has high amount of glucose in the body, there is not enough insulin that can transport all the excess glucose to the cells. This can lead to gestational diabetes. Diet and exercise are the best ways to control this condition. It may also lead to complications for the baby at the time of birth.

Prediabetes: Many patients who are suffering from diabetes type 2 often suffer from a condition called prediabetes where the cells of the body start developing insulin resistance. This phase also implies some amount of damage to the heart and circulatory system.

Treating diabetes on time is a matter of regulating and keeping a check on your blood sugar levels even as you maintain your healthy weight and lifestyle with a good diet and exercise.

Classical Homeopathic remedies for diabetes include Uranium Nitricum, Phosphoric Acid, Syzygium Jambolanum and Cephalandra Indica. These medications are either used stand alone or along with other medications as adjunct. Homeopathic medicines look to cure the inherent disorder, and do not have any side effects, thus are safe for diabetics.

I am 64 years old. I am Suffering from Uric acid (10.5) & leg's joint pain. Please help.
your uric acid level is very high..pl. take tab. zyloric 200 mg 1od aftyer meal.Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water every day. Drinking water at intervals keeps your body hydrated so that uric acid crystals do not form at all. A healthy intake of water can help flush excess uric acid out of the body. Increase your consumption of antioxidant-rich foods like cherries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes and pineapples. They prevent inflammation of the joints and help in the excretion of uric acid. Try apple cider vinegar. Not only is it known to lower uric acid levels, but it also helps to reduce arthritic pain, even when used as a topical application. Stay away from foods that can cause gout or trigger inflammation. These include beans, mushrooms, meat and fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines and crab. Although patients with gout are advised to limit alcohol intake, the best option would be to eliminate it completely. Alcohol not only increases the risk of gout it also increases the severity of symptoms.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for your query. Diabetes affects small and large blood vessels, particularly when the disease is present over a long period (over few years). Therefore, erectile dysfunction (due to affection of blood supply to penile muscles), is a common complication. This is seen oarticularly rapidly when disease is uncontrolled with high blood glucose levels and even in well controlled disease after a few years. There is really no permanent cure. Most important is strict blood glucose control with FBG <100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. There are a class of drugs called as PDE-V inhibitors which have been found quite useful in overcoming the problem. Thanks.

Hypothyroidism as such does not cause any neck pain. Ordinarily it is due to stffening around soft tissue of neck called Cervical spondylosis resulting in pain in neck sometimes radiating to shoulders, upper arms and shoulder blade or back of head

Hello doctor. I am a medico. My mother was diagnosed to be subclinical hypothyroidism TSH 5.9 and was started on eltroxin 25 mcg and calcium .omeze and rantac .diagnosed 3 weeks back and started using. 2 weeks everything went well. Suddenly one evng she went to puja and returned back with URTICARIA. AND it progressed to lip oedema on next day mrng .immediately took her to hospital. Started on prednisolone 10 mg 3 days with allegra and montelukast. 3 days fine. Urticaria decreased. On 4th day again urticaria started now it was generalised (initially on day 1 it was localised) on that day night he developed one episode of tightness throat. But no shortness of breath. Later mrng again we took to hospital. Vitals all normal. Doc said to continue allegra and montelukast .and by evng urticaria increased and consulted dermatologist and started on deflocort and allegra and montelukast .now rashes urticaria less. My QUESTION CAN IT BE DUE TO ELTROXIN? RANTAC? OMEZA? CALCIUM? I MEAN DRUG INDUCED URTICARIA? OR SHE SAID SHE ATE LITTLE PRASADAM AT TEMPLE? CAN IT BE DUE TO FOOD? WHAT IS BEST STEP. Hello, It is very difficult to say which of the various drugs mentioned has been the cause of allergy. Usually Thyroxine is very well tolerated by most of the patients. However, allergic reaction can occur to any drug or a substance any time, even after continuous usage. To find out the culprit she may have to stop all medicines for a week or so, then may introduce one by one to see which one of the compound is responsible. Then that has to be eliminated for life time. Subclinical hypothyroidism is not treated with thyroxine. Only if T4 level is low, plus there are some troublesome symptoms of hypothyroidism present then only treatment may be initiated. TSH above 10 mU/L warrents treatment. Thanks.

I am 48 years old male I am diabetic have 150 at fasting suggest some ayurvedic and homeopathic medicine.

A proper measure for knowing and managing your diabetes will be to ensure a hba1c below 6.5%. My guess is you would be around 7.2-7.5%. Regarding diet, we indians have high carbohydrate diet. You have to closely observe your plate and you can come up with a better diet plan for yourself. To simplify it, identify the items which are carb rich in your plate and try to compensate the same with protein and fibres, for eg cut down a roti and increase sabji, dal or salad. To have a better control you can do a monthly self glucose monitoring 3 times a day and keep a track of your food with it. Check fasting sugar, sugar one hour prior your lunch and 2 hrs post lunch, and note down the details of your breakfast and lunch items. Modify as per my earlier suggestions and within a week you will see your blood sugar level responding. Then we will plan for meds. Best of luck and let me know if you need more info.
