Unexplained Infertility - What Is It?

MBBS, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG)
Gynaecologist, Pune
Unexplained Infertility - What Is It?

They say you need to have intercourse only once to get pregnant. However, this isn’t always the case. Many couples struggle for months and years trying to conceive a baby. The inability to get pregnant despite having unprotected sexual intercourse for over a year is defined as infertility. Infertility in women may be caused by a number of factors. This includes PCOS, ovulation disorders, side effects of medication, radiation etc.

However, in some cases, the cause of infertility may be difficult to pinpoint. In such cases, the patient may be diagnosed with unexplained infertility.

  • Unexplained infertility can be very frustrating as all your and your partner’s test results are normal. However, it is important to remember that modern medicine can only test for certain fertility factors. For example, there is no way to test the quality of an egg being released by the ovaries. Some of the other probable causes for unexplained infertility include nutritional deficiencies, low levels of cervical mucus, thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances, long-term use of medication etc.
  • Unexplained infertility is common amongst all infertility cases. In fact, according to some studies, it accounts for almost 50% of all infertility cases. Certain factors can increase the risk of unexplained infertility. Women over the age of 35 years are more susceptible to this type of infertility. Mild endometriosis could also contribute towards this condition. Stress is another factor that could influence unexplained infertility. In the case of unexplained infertility, conceiving a baby without treatment has a very low probability.
  • IVF or In Vitro Fertilization is the most common form of treatment for this type of infertility. Hormone treatment is the first stage of IVF. This causes the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of one egg. This medication is given in the form of injections. Just before these eggs are released from the ovaries, your doctor will harvest them. At the same time, the sperm will be collected from the male partner. These sperm cells will then be introduced to the harvested eggs in a laboratory so that the eggs may be fertilized. The fertilized eggs may be kept under observation for up to 5 days. Once the embryos are ready, one or more embryos will be transferred to the woman’s uterus. In most cases, up to three embryos are implanted. When it comes to unexplained infertility, IVF has a relatively high success rate. In case the IVF is not successful, you may choose to restart the process. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

I am 56 with bmi 28 and Diabetes due to chronic stress and sedentary life. For last 5 years my h1ac remains below 6.7...
Mr. Lybrate-user, you have summed up the situation correctly that is bmi of 28 kg/m2 and sedentary life, these two are the main causes for a high blood sugar levels. Hba1c% 6.7 is good. However, if you really push yourself to exercise or walk every day for at least 1 hour, then you will notice things will change for the better. Your objective should be to cut just 5 to 8 % of current weight over next 6 months, that will make you feel extremely energetic, drug change or addition may be helpful, but lifestyle change is going to give a long term benefit. As regards the change of drugs or addition, you will have to come in a private conversation, where I can suggest an additional drug or a change. Reason being in this communication we are supposed to give only general guidelines. You must be aware that your ideal body weight should be 63 kgs. So please consider this. With regards.

I have an diabetese and gas problem and my husband has also, and navy weight stomach problem and also skin problem.

MD Homeopath, DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

I have an diabetese and gas problem and my husband has also, and navy weight stomach problem and also skin problem.
Ms. Lybrate-user diabetic is a systemic disease which can affect each and every cell / part of your body depending upon the genetic predisposition i. E. What you have acquired from your parent that is genetic predisposition and rest is your approach / attitude towards life -- give me the full detale like tendency for gas formation linked to eatable things, stress, sleep, life style and what way they are disturbing you like heavyness abd with burps/gastric reflux or pain abdomen or irregular bowl moments like constipation or recurrent stomach upset along with the status of your body in general like your menstruation, white discharge, lack of energy pains any where etc. Along with symptoms of skin - what triggers your itching like heat, waering synthetics, or even stress well every thing is interlinked in homoeopathy as we consider the body as a single unit instead of diving in to different parts -- so donot hesitate in narrating / sharing all these things of you and your husband to get those treated differently as medicines vary from person to person and even for a single disease.

Mr. lybrate-user, 340 mg of blood glucose is very high level and it is dangerous too. If not well treated can lead to severe complications of diabetes. Tablet Jalra (Vildagliptin 50 mg) is a good drug used to treat diabetes Type 2. Normally it is very well tolerated. As regards the second name mentioned, I am not aware as to what is (or are) the ingredients. It will be good if you give following details like fasting, PP glucose levels, HbA1c%, dietary pattern & extent of daily exercise, plus weight and height. Then I will be able to guide. Thanks.

My age is 48 years old and am male.My sugar levels 264 what precaution should I take?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (self-monitoring of blood glucose? smbg). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of fasting sugar (fbs) and 2 hours after food (ppbs) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ insulin will be needed. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me privately with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch.

Diet to control thyroid. M diagnosed recently with thyroid 10.4. M taking thyroid 25 mg Is it sufficient?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
You have hypothyroidism. Thyroid is a hormone and is dependent on multiple ingredients and signals for production - hence no particular food is to avoided or taken in more quantity. However, if you are iodine deficient then that requires dietary intervention. Thyroid medicine dose is always to be assessed in the background of each individual and no dose is standardized to be sufficient for all!
