Thyroid problem can affect both mother and child badly. But if thyroid is controlled, there is nothing much to worry. So, ensure that your thyroid is normal before conception.

Are my symptoms consistent with thyroid disease? Could my symptoms be the result of anything else and what Investigations do I need to have performed to make a diagnosis? Help me sir.

Mr Vimmy,How do I know whether your symptoms are of hypothyroidism or not, because no symptoms are mentioned. To know if you have hypothyroidism get the thyroid assay done, results of that will help in deciding. Any good clinical /pathology lab does these tests.

The reason for advising that is, banana contains high concentration of sugar, gets rapidly converted to glucose and raises blood glucose fairly rapidly. Eating a small banana once a while is ok. But regular consumption is not advised. Fruits like mango, banana, grapes and chikkoo as those are too sweet, hence better to be avoided. Other fruits like papaya, pomegranate, pear, guava, apple, water melon, orange, sweet lime and other melons are allowed. But only about 100 g a day should be taken with good control of blood glucose.

Can you kindly explain to me how a person becomes resistant to insulin and what are the remedies if any .

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Can you kindly explain to me how a person becomes resistant to insulin and what are the
remedies if any .
Mr. Lybrate-user, insulin resistance id mainly caused by increasing body fat. Hence, being over weight or being obese is one of the main causes. A lot of fat collects around organs inside the abdomen, (around liver, kidney and gut) this affects insulin action. Once that happens glucose level tends to go up. Resultant hyperglycemia causes glucotoxicity and further increases insulin resistance. Therefore, weight reduction, diet control and regular exercise (exercise helps muscles to use more glucose, helps reduction of blood glucose), are specifically helpful. That is why inan obese or over weight person weight reduction by even 5 to 8% produces significant blood glucose reduction as it improves insulin action. Thanks.

Since he has already suffered from pancreatitis and half of the pancreas is already removed, he should stop taking alcohol totally other wise he will have serious problem. Let him attend alcoholic anonymous programme near to your locality, where they conduct various counselling sessions with a group of alcoholic to get rid of alcohol. Many people have benefited by attending the programme. Consult physician for further advice.

Mr Manoj, Hypertension and diabetes usually are seen together in many persons. Apart from taking appropriate medication, it essential to adapt a modified lifestyle, which means having a balanced and restricted diet, exercising regularly for more than 1 hour a day, avoiding sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, alcohol and smoking. In case of hypertension salt intake also has to be low(2.3 g/day). From the data it is not clear what is level of blood pressure, which drugs are being taken for treating diabetes and current fasting and PP sugar leves and HbA1c%. Plus also inform you are exercising regularly, as your BMI is 26.19 kgs, which is high. Plus inform about dietary pattern. It will be good if you come in a private conversation with these details, where I will be able to give specific suggestions.
