My dad has diabetes for many years. But never check up any kidney test. But 1 month ago when his diabetes test results come I also saw that he had also done urine test and his creatine level was 1.0 mg/dl. Bt one result disturbed my mind that is his Albumin to creatinine ratio was 930 mg. Is it possible? When Normal peoples just have 30 mg. Does he have kidney problem?

May b this is a effect of diabetes on kidneys that he is loosing albumin(type of protein) through urine. Creatinine is still normal so he has fair chances of recovery. Dietary control is most important. Start yoga, meditation. Listening to instrumental music also helps in diabetes. Morning walk and walking bare foot on grass is advisable. Start homoeopathic treatment, u can consult privately.

I am a patient of DM, IHD, PPM, HTN. taking regular medicines. What will be my ideal diet? My age is 72 years.
I hope every condition is under control. Ideal diet is not according to charts. You eat according to your constitution without comparing with others. No sugar or sweets, no bad fats, only good fats like a spoon of pure ghee/ butter and a katori of assorted nuts. Minimal salts and no packaged food as it contains lots of salt, being a preservative. Lemon juice with honey but cut down on other calories (just 30 cals in a spoon of honey) it helps to burn the fat and sugar. Fruits like guava, orange, apple can be had. Exercise like walking also burns sugar and fats.

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

MBBS, Diploma in Diabetology

Autoimmune thyroid gland and its enzymes destruction is associated with hashimotos thyroiditis. Levothyroxine replacement through oral tablets is choice of treatment. Iodine siluppliments won't help.

She is taking tyrox 100 mg
We got ...
Hello, her tsh level which is 0.53 milli units/l is with in the recommended level (by american thyroid assocn), for conception. Before conception it is better to have tsh between 0.1 to 2 milli units and even during first trimester. Later 2nd trimeste it should be 0.3 to 3 mill uits and 3rd trimester 0.3 to 3.5 milli units/l. So my suggestion is you can go ahead and try for pregnancy. Hair fall is usually the last thing to get corrected once hypothyroidism comes in control. There is no need to reduce the dose of thyroxine 100 mcg now. May be post delivery you can look at that. Thanks for the question.

My mother is suffering from sugar and blood pressure problems please advice me what to do to cure this problem?
Mr Vipul, Diabetes mellitus and hypertension both conditions can only be controlled by appropriate treatment with drugs, die,t exercise.and weight control. There is no cure for these conditions.Treatment has to be for life time. Drug selection and dosage will depend on individual patient, sugar and BP level. Similarly dietary advise also has to be very specific and induvidualised. So you may come in a private conversation with all the details like fasating and Pp sugar levels, HbA1c%, BP reading, dietary pattern, weight and height. There I will be able to give specific advice .

Hyperglycemia - 10 Tips to Manage it

Practical Course in Diabetology, POST GRADUATE COURSE IN DIABETOLOGY, MBBS
Endocrinologist, Srinagar
Hyperglycemia - 10 Tips to Manage it

In simple terms, hyperglycemia is the medical term for abnormally high levels of sugar in the blood stream. The blood sugar level range is 65-110 mg/dl and can extend up to 120-140 mg/dl a few hours after eating. However, when a person has eaten no food, but has a blood sugar level of more than 126 mg/dl, that may be a symptom of diabetes mellitus.

Reasons Behind it

A person who is hyperglycemic is most likely to be diagnosed with diabetes, which may be type 1 or type 2.

Type 1 diabetes is caused when the immune system destroys the insulin secreting cells in the pancreas. The insulin production in the body stops, thereby, causing an enormous increase in the sugar levels. In such a situation, nothing, but external dose of insulin will be required to survive.

Type 2 diabetes is caused when the body stops responding to the insulin produced by the body and in a desperate attempt to maintain blood sugar level, the pancreas produce excess insulin. In this case, changing lifestyle, food-habits and taking proper medication can be the only way out for a healthy life.

Therefore, the major causes leading to increase in blood sugar level might be:

  • Inadequate supply of insulin

  • Slow or no reaction of the body to the insulin produced by the body

Tips to manage hyperglycemia

Here are some important tips that could help individuals regulate their blood sugar levels:

  1. As we know, the carbohydrates break down into glucose, which is absorbed by the body cells with the help of insulin. So, in case of hyperglycemia, individuals should manage or better, cut off, carbohydrate intake in their meals.

  2. Another important element to be highly monitored is the blood cholesterol level. For this, you must curb eating oily and spicy food.

  3. It is very important that individuals limit their alcohol intake because alcohol contains huge amount of calories and carbs, which might lead to sky-rocketing blood-sugar levels.

  4. The diet should contain adequate portions of nuts and olive oil.

  5. Eating fatty milk products and fatty food should be strictly avoided.

  6. Each and every food should be inspected for sugar because even a slight bit of sugar can mess up the entire process of managing the sugar level.

  7. Individuals should try stress-free mild work out, as heavy work out could cause the blood-sugar level to rise in case of type 2 diabetes.

  8. Anxiety, tension and stress would not help the process in anyway.

Proper medication and check-ups are necessary. It is important to be fit and healthy.

Mr. Lybrate-user, if your blood sugar is in good control, all your symptoms will disappear. You should achieve fasting blood glucose closer to 100 mg, pp 150 to 160 mg and hba1c%<6.8. Otherwise, it is difficult to feel energetic and active enough.
