What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, also called hashimoto's disease, hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, a disorder in which the immune system turns against the body's own tissues. In people with hashimoto's, the immune system attacks the thyroid. This can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid does not make enough hormones for the body's needs. Located in the front of your neck, the thyroid gland makes hormones that control metabolism. This includes your heart rate and how quickly your body uses calories from the foods you eat. The exact cause of hashimoto's is not known, but many factors are believed to play a role. They include: genes, hormones, excessive iodine, radiation exposure. Treatments for hashimoto's thyroiditis: there is no cure for hashimoto's, but replacing hormones with medication can regulate hormone levels and restore your normal metabolism. The pills are available in several different strengths.

Dear Lybrate User, *Eating goitrogenic foods such as rapeseed, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, maize, lima beans, soya and pearl millet should be limited. These foods contain natural goitrogens, which are chemicals that cause the enlargement of the thyroid gland by interfering with thyroid hormone synthesis. Cooking is known to make the goitrogens elements less effective, but it would be wise not eat these foods raw. *Smoking depresses TH levels and produces chronic underlying hypothyroidism. Research shows that nicotine increases the synthesis of T3 from T4 in the brain, while alcohol and opiates block the breakdown of T3 in the brain. *Foods that contain iodine, such as kelp, beetroot, radish, parsley, potatoes, fish, oatmeal and bananas, should be kept in the diet.

To control hypothyroidism thyroxine is required. However, guidelines usually say to start treatment when tsh levels cross 10 milli units, as between 5.5 to about 9.9 milli units it is considered as subclinical hypothyroidism. Unless a person has definite symptoms of thyroid deficiency treatment is not started with thyroxine. Even if it is given a lower dose is recommended. To begin with 100 mcg dosage was a bit too high. That is the reason your tsh levels have gone down to 0.082 milli units / ml. Even now the dose of 75 mcg is high. With treatment tsh should be in the range of 3 to 4 milli units / ml so you may reduce the dose.
