Thyroid - 4 Diet Tips For Better Management

Thyroid - 4 Diet Tips For Better Management

The thyroid gland in your body is responsible for controlling and secreting those hormones that help in your natural growth and development. These hormones are crucial in regulating some of the most important functions of your body such as your heart rate, breathing, your body weight, your menstrual cycle and your muscle power to name a few.

Problems of the thyroid gland (such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism) can hamper all of these vital functions, and these problems usually arise due to a poor diet. However, your diet can also help in improving the health of your thyroid gland. Here are some diet tips to help you out:

1. Include lots of iodine in your diet

Iodine is that nutritive element without which your thyroid gland will not be able to function at all, being its building block. Therefore iodine rich foods such as fortified salt, eggs, seaweed and other dairy products should be a part of your diet. Along with iodine, zinc, selenium, copper and iron are other very important elements that should be a part of your diet too.

2. Plenty of B vitamins and antioxidants help

Since stress (blame it on cortisol- the stress hormone that overworks your thyroid in case of chronic stress) plays a major role in hampering the proper functioning of your thyroid gland, eliminating it and detoxifying yourself becomes extremely important. This can be done through including plenty of B vitamins and antioxidants in your diet. White meat, fishes like tuna, peanuts, brown rice and fruits such as goji berries and wild blueberries can be of great help in this regard.

3.  Say no to soy

Soy is one of the main culprits behind the malfunctioning of your thyroid gland as it contains an element known as isoflavones, which can reduce the iodine reserve in the gland. Apart from that, vegetables that belong to the brassica family such as cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts are linked to causing goitre and must be avoided. Consumption of gluten must be avoided too as it can cause autoimmune thyroid disorders, celiac disease and hormonal imbalances.

4. Enjoy your daily meals

In today's fast paced world a stress-free meal is a thing of the past as most people are in a rush to get done with their breakfast, lunch or dinner. This hampers your digestive function and also puts stress on your thyroid glands. The best way to eat is to sit on a table and relax, enjoying every morsel you swallow. This ensures your thyroid remains healthy.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. When on treatment with levothyroxine for hypothyroidism, TSH should be maintained < 3 mU/L, to be free from all the symptoms, including weight gain. SInce there is no mention about the TSH value, it is difficult to comment. If your efforts to reduce weight have to give results, then see that TSH is below 3 mU/L. With a BMI of 34.58 kgs /M2 you are close to being grade to obese and carrying an extra weight of 28 kgs. Thanks.

You need to confirm your low cortisol levels with an overnight dexamethasone suppression test or a 24 hr urinary cortisol or a midnight salivary cortisol levels. If it is really low, then it has to be worked up properly to find out the cause & treated accordingly.

Mr. lybrate-user, "Thyroid disease" is term that encompasses a number of disorders associated with thyroid gland. There can be excess secretion called as Hyperthyroidism and lack of secretion or deficiency known as Hypothyroidism. Both these conditions cause multiple problems. The exact reasons are difficult to identify. Iodine deficiency and autoimmune problems are associated. In hyperthyroidism BP may be more. Thanks.

Hi, As far as I know flax seeds are rich in omega 3 fatty acids which are otherwise predominantly found in fish. This has got nothing to with thyroid harmone. So you can consume these seeds without worrying about thyroid hormone. I'm not sure whther you can consume them daily or not. You can take the help of a nutritionist. Hope this helps. Regards

Mr. lybrate-user, TSH value of 6.543 mU/L, is just above the normal limit. Usually no treatment is advised. However, in your case with a BMI of 30.06 kgs/M2, with grade 1 obesity, it is better for you to start treatment. Otherwise efforts to reduce weight will not yield any results. Thanks.

How can I control my thyroid simulation hormones is there any tips please tell me.

BHMS

Homeopathy treats the person as a whole. This means that homeopathic treatment focuses on the patient as a person, as well as his pathological condition. The Homeopathic thyroid treatment medicines are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency (predisposition/susceptibility) is also often taken into account for the treatment of chronic conditions. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance

Archanaji, Thanks for the query. If one is on treatment for hypothyroidism and if the thyroxine dose is adequate, then TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L to be free from any symptoms in a non pregnant woman. However, if conception is desired then TSH should be maintained <2 mU/L. Later during first trimester it should be 0.1 to 2.5 mU/L, 2nd trimester :0.3 to 3 U/L & 3rd trimester 0.3 to 3.1 mU/L. So present dose has to be increased by 25 mcg per day. Then check TSH after 6 weeks to see if desired level is reached. Thanks.

Dear lybrate user with the limited amount of information provided it appears that you are concerned about your weight. For a successful weight reduction it is essential that you should start exercising 30-45 min on a regular basis and should have strict diet which is low in carbohydrate and high in fibre. Right now difficult to say without testing what you could be suffering from. So if in doubt then get yourself tested. Hope that solves your query. Anything more then please feel free to revert.
