Hi lybrate-user. It is important to find out underlying cause. Causes of cough are many like. Cold, pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis. Whooping cough. Post nasal drip. Allergy. Asthma copd smoking. Laryngitis. Bronchiectasis. Aspirations. Medication like ace inhibitors for bp. Interstitial lung disease. Heart failure. Rarely lung cancer. Cough may be aggravated by breathing cold dry air, air pollution, inhalation of dust and smoke, excessive use of voice. To findout underlying cause sputum culture, ekg, lung function test, xray of chest and sinuses are done. Dry cough may be relieved by 1. Demulcents that treat dry cough by coating and soothing pharynx and relieve irritation that triggers dry cough. Cough syrup containing sucrose and glycerol. 2. Honey with warm water and lemon. 3. Steam inhalation. 4. Gargling with warm salty water. 5. Cough suppressant containing dextromethorpan or codeine or dihydrocodeine. 6. Sucking lozenges.

First try to understand Asthma. Asthma is the hyper-responsiveness of the respiratory tubes to some allergen. Please note that I mentioned the word "Hyper-Resposiveness" and not responsiveness. If somebody sneezes/coughs on inhalation of smoke then its responsiveness as your body is trying to protect you but if somebody developes suffocation or choking because on the inhalation of same smoke the its Hyper-responsiveness where your body is trying to overprotect you. Asthma is this tendency. By medicines and Clean air we can protect you- but its very hard to say if we can completely stop this tendency. People who move to regions with cleaner air- get rid of asthma - atleast that is one way to get a cure !!! Recurrence of attacks of asthma may be due to some underlying uncured infection or recent persistent exposure to unclean air. Please do involve yourself in cleaning activities which cause increased inhalation of dust particles !

It is advisable if you can meet an ent specialist in your area so that he can clinically examine you and advise accordingly. Hope that solves your query. Cough, sneezing and fever are all symptoms of flu. If she has breathing problem made out by poor activity, chest moving up and down, she has to be seen by a doctor. Otherwise give her paracetamol syrup 5 ml and lots of fluids.

Recently I was feeling short of breath and went to the cardiologist to get checked. He informed there is infection in the chest and gave me Roxid 300 and Metopar. Also he suggested to get chest X-Ray done and the result is enclosed with slides. Blood reports where OK. But I still feel pressure on my chest on the upper right side and breathless. Doctor suggested to continue the medicine: should I be worried as before two months the chest X-ray was normal.

Repeat your x-Ray and consult your doctor to see if there is any improvement. Sometimes due to weather change you can get infection, which is what happened probably. Also just to be on thrasher side get an ECG and Echo done.

Is there a genetic factor to strokes? What medications are best for the treatment of asthma? What are their side effects?

PHD, MD
Ayurveda, Udupi
There is no such direct relation bet genetics and stroke but risk factors of stroke like blood pressure and diabetics is of genetic tendency. Familial asthma can be controlled with preventive measures like changing diet and medicine but total cure is difficult. Continuous intake of herbal medicines like swamala (dootapapeshvar, chawanaprasham is reducing the severity and frequency of attacks and also well respond to simple medicines of ayurveda or other medicnes during attack.
