Mr. Lybrate-user, it is possible that if potassium citrate is taken it may affect fluoroquinolnes action. But most often in urinary tract infections both these drugs are given together. There is no harm.

How to control sugar which I am having from last six months. Its about 320 at present.

How to control sugar which I am having from last six months. Its about 320 at present.
Hello, to control blood sugar one has to take appropriate medicine, which can be oral anti diabetic drugs or insulin injections. Plus restricted diet and daily exercise of at least 1 hour, these are needed. Blood sugar of 320 mg is very high. You need to upgrade the treatment. Ideally when in good control fasting sugar should be around 100 mg, pp 150 to 160 mg and hbac% <7. Please understand diabetes is a disease which if not controlled effectively damages eyes, small and large blood vessels, kidneys, nerves, heart and affects lower limbs very badly. Excess blood sugar is definitely dangerous. So please initiate proper treatment and control it.

Knowing thyroid problems

Hello everyone! My name is Dr. Hanish Gupta and I’m here today to discuss with you the important effects of thyroid gland on human body.
We have appropriately titled this video as three minute thyroid consult because I’m going to explain you within three minutes that what is thyroid gland and how it affects the human body.
Thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland which is located in front of your windpipe just like this. This is the thyroid gland. Thyroid gland despite its small size is a very very important gland for the human body because it controls the growth and the energy processes of the human body that is why the effect of this hormone has a far reaching effect on the entire functioning of the human body.

Now I will talk about the excess and the deficiency of this hormone in the human body which needs two conditions called hypothyroidism when there is a deficiency of this hormone in the body and hyperthyroidism when there is an excess of this hormone in the human body. The most common condition of hypothyroidism or deficiency of this hormone in the human body is hashimoto thyroiditis in which the thyroid gland looks like this. This is a condition in which all the energy processes of the human body, they become slower. There is weight gain, there is slowness of the heart rate or bradycardia there is swelling of the human body, there is hair fall, there is infertility or menstrual problems in females, there is depression, and most importantly all these things they collect together and become a very big problem for the patient.

However, the help is nearby because this condition can be treated with taking only one pill on daily basis. Similarly, a condition in which there is an excess of this hormone in the human body is known as hyperthyroidism and the most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Grave’s disease in which the thyroid gland looks like this. This is a condition in which all the energy processes of the human body, they become fast, there is faster heart rate, there is tremors or tremulousness, there is irritability of mood, there is weight loss, there is lot of other things that indicate that the patient is having faster energy but of no use because he’s having this condition for a long time and this condition can also be treated by taking only one pill, which can even be stopped later in life.

So, friends I hope that I have been able to dispel your doubts about thyroid hormone and I believe that you would love to come back to me on Lybrate for an online opinion or at my clinic at life aid clinic located in Delhi.
Thanks for watching and keep healthy!

The best way to get a flat stomach is to try high intensity cardio. This is because it burns a larger number of calories than low intensity cardio. Playing sports such as football, basketball, cricket, tennis and other sports is also helpful in promoting weight loss. You should perform cardio exercises each day for 60 minutes. Brisk walking is considered an effective cardio workout for those who suffer from joint problems, as it does not place much stress on the joints, compared to other cardio exercises such as running or cycling.

Type 2 Diabetes - Symptoms, Causes And Treatment

Type 2 Diabetes - Symptoms, Causes And Treatment

Glucose is the primary ingredient within the body, which is turned into an energy source. This is what we use when we move, walk or make the slightest movements. To metabolize glucose into energy, our body needs insulin, which is a hormone produced within the pancreas. However, if the body doesn't react to the insulin or the pancreas is unable to produce enough, glucose cannot be converted into energy and thus results in type 2 diabetes.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes:

  1. Sudden or gradual weight loss despite increased hunger - Many people complain that they feel hungry and eat more, but despite this the tend to lose weight. This occurs as the body cannot metabolize glucose and uses energy reserves from fat or muscles leading to weight loss.
  2. Frequent infections and slow healing - If you are afflicted with type 2 diabetes, then it might affect your immune system and you may be prone to infections. Also, any cuts or bruises on your body will take much longer to heal than normal.
  3. Irritability and fatigue - Another common symptom of type 2 diabetes along with the other symptoms mentioned here is quick irritability and fatigue. This is because most of the body is deprived of sugar and thus lacks the energy needed to function normally.
  4. Constant thirst and increased urination - If you feel constantly thirsty despite drinking ample water and urinating frequently, this may be a tell tale sign of type 2 diabetes.
  5. Skin darkening in folds and creases of the body - Also known as acanthosis nigricans; this is known darkening of the skin where it also becomes velvety to the touch. It usually develops in the folds of skin in areas, such as the neck and armpits and is a direct result of insulin resistance.

Causes of type 2 diabetes:

Some of the most common causes of type 2 diabetes could be:

  • Being overweight
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Genetic predisposition or family history
  • If you are more than 45 years of age
  • Hormonal problems such as Polycystic ovarian syndrome

Treatment or management of type 2 diabetes:

In most cases, major lifestyle changes can easily keep the symptoms of type 2 diabetes in check although, in certain cases medications may also be required. Some of the steps necessary are as follows:

  1. Change in diet and healthy eating
  2. Physical activity and exercising
  3. Regular blood sugar monitoring and
  4. Blood sugar medication along with insulin therapy, if necessary

high cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take green veg., whole grain. Take anti cholesterol medicines .

I am 35 M diabetic. My current dose is glimpeide 1 mg + metformin 1000 BD.
Still it is 170 fasting pls advice.
For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for long hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Avoid junk foods. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

Infertile? Consider Surrogacy

DNB - Obstetrics & Gynecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
Infertile? Consider Surrogacy

Surrogacy is the method that is used for reproduction in which a woman other than the woman, who wants to have the baby, agrees to undertake pregnancy and give birth to a child for the couple that appoints her. A couple can opt for surrogacy in the following conditions.

- Infertility
In the case of females who cannot reproduce due to infertility or some other medical conditions that make the process risky for both the mother and the childlike heart diseases, liver infirmities and high blood pressure, surrogacy can opt for so that the couple can experience the bliss of becoming parents.

- If you are a single parent
A single parent can opt for surrogacy in order to fulfil his/her dream of having a child to live for.

- Other factors
There are several other factors when a couple might want to opt for surrogacy. For instance, in couples, where the female is too busy building a stable career for herself and she cannot take the risk of opting for pregnancy, surrogacy can come to their rescue. Also, repeated miscarriages, pelvic disorder, hysterectomy, an impaired uterus or the absence of uterus can act as reasons to opt for surrogacy.

There are a few factors that need to be considered before opting for surrogacy. They are listed below.

Type of surrogacy

Traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy are the two options available. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mother not only carries the embryo in her womb until childbirth but also donates the egg. However in gestational surrogacy, the egg is taken from the biological mother and impregnated in the womb of the surrogate mother through in vitro fertilization techniques. The intended parents need to take a decision regarding the type of surrogacy that they wish to opt for.

Surrogacy laws

The intended parents must be aware of the surrogacy laws prevalent in their country so as to make sure that they can go through the entire process smoothly. For instance, in India, it is mandatory that the surrogate child should be biologically related to one of the two parents.

Cost of surrogacy

Another important factor that needs to be considered while opting for surrogacy is the cost of the undertaking. It can involve high costs due to the unpredictability of the situations surrounding the process, so the financial stability of the intended parents should be kept in mind. Also, choose the right agency or even if you choose an independent candidate to become the surrogate mother for your child, make a wise choice. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

Please tell me the maximum limit of insulin can be taken as I am taking 27 units at bed time basalog.

Please tell me the maximum limit of insulin can be taken as I am taking 27 units at bed time basalog.
There is no" maximum dose" for insulin. In fact, it is one of the very few drugs that does not have a maximum dose. In other words, as long as you don't have hypoglycemia or other complications (eg: severe kidney disease) and your blood sugars are controlled round the clock, insulin is safe at any dose.
