Dear user we can very well understand your concern for your mother. It could had been better had you provided us with detailed medication list and her latest blood reports so that we could had a better understanding of her condition. Regular exercise and diet as advised by the dietician in this case will be a key to treatment. I will suggest to get her lab test done if not done recently so that we can assess her condition better. Hope this solves your query. Revert with reports.

Hi, This is Hanumesh kumar 26 years old, Recently I have checked my thyroid tests (T3, T4, TSH) which results, T3-92, T4-9, TSH- 3.53. So please suggest me whether i'm normal or I have to take thyroid treatment. Waiting for revert!

Hi, This is Hanumesh kumar 26 years old, Recently I have checked my thyroid tests (T3, T4, TSH) which results, T3-92,...
Hi lybrate-user Please share the TSH range of your lab report/complete report. Normally TSH should be in the range OF. 3 TO 3.3IU/ml. It might be borderline raised. Ideally Thyroid function tests should be done after 12 hours fasting in the morning. That helps in better identification of borderline hypothyroidism I am outlining  food you should avoid or restrict in Hypothyroidism. It's important  you maintain  your body weight exercise regularly. Weight gain increases thyroid hormone requirements.  Avoid cruciferous   group of veggies  like cabbage and broccoli. Avoid soya bean in all forms. No soya, nugget, chunk, tofu or milk. Limit their intake: Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips, and bok choy. Cooking the vegetables can reduce the effect that cruciferous vegetables have on the thyroid gland. Limiting your intake to 5 ounces a day appears to have no adverse effect on thyroid function. Decrease gluten  intake from processed  food. Always try whole grain varieties of cereals which is rich in fibres and help improve  bowels (Take your thyroid replacement  medicine several hours before or several hours after food rich in fibres. Otherwise problem  with absorption  of hormone. 20 to 35 gram of fibres daily from all sources. Avoid excessive fatty (deep fried) and sugary food as hypothyroidism  causes your metabolism  to slow down &weight gain. Avoid highly salted food, chips, pickles, sauces as they Contain  large amount of sodium. Hypothyroidism  puts you at risk of high BP and excess sodium in salt aggravates Coffee  in excess. And coffee with thyroid hormone  replacement  can prevent absorption.  Alcohol. It is toxic to thyroid gland and prevents  hormone production and absorption.  Hope this helps.

Mr Basantsingh, To give any suggestion, I need to know following details : Fasting and PP sugar levels, HbA1c%, weight, height and waist circumference, drugs being taken with dosage, dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise. It is better if you come in a private conversation, where I will be able to give specific suggestions In the mean time avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods and pastries. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (about 100 g a day). Exercise daily for at least 1 hour a day. Take prescribed medication. Refrain from alcohol and smoking.

Are pickle good for health for diabetes patient or harmful for a diabetic patient help me out.
Mr. Lybrate-user, pickles contain a lot of salt, which is basically unhealthy. These are taken to enhance the taste of food, but they are definitely not good. Especially in a person with raised blood pressure pickles are a taboo. For others too a little bit occasionally may be used. Ther is no health benefit from them.

HYPOTHYROIDISM OR MYXOEDEMA [HYPOTHYROID]

HYPOTHYROIDISM OR MYXOEDEMA [HYPOTHYROID]
HYPOTHYROIDISM OR MYXOEDEMA [HYPOTHYROID]

HYPOTHYROIDISM / MYXOEDEMA
Hypothyroidism is a clinical condition, which results from deficiency of thyroid hormones.
Hypothyroidism with deposition of mucinous substance in subcutaneous tissues is known as ‘myxoedema`.

CAUSES:
• Primary thyroid gland involvement.
• Lack of pituitary TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone).
• Hypothalamic deficiency of TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone).
• Autoimmune thyroiditis.
• Severe iodine deficiency.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS:
• Slowing down of mental and physical functions of the body.
• Easy fatigability and tiredness.
• Sleepiness.
• Body ache.
• Puffiness of face.
• Edema feet.
• Weight gain.
• Increased sensitivity to cold.
• Dryness of skin.
• Brittle nails.
• Constipation.
• Hair fall.
• Hoarseness of voice.
• Hearing loss.
• Tendency for repeated infections.
• Muscle cramps.
• Shortness of breath.
• Anemia.
• Mood swings.
• Forgetfulness.
• Slow speech.
• Infertility.
• Menorrhagia (profuse menses).
• Occasionally rise in blood pressure.

DIETARY MANAGEMENT:
Avoid:
• Avoid goitrogens (food that blocks the utilization of iodine): turnips, cabbage, mustard, cassava root, soybeans, peanuts, pine nuts and millets. Cooking usually inactivates goitrogens.

CONSUME:
• Increase consumption of iodine, it is an important building block of thyroid hormone:
– Sea food, meat, milk and milk, sea plants- kelp, dulse (vegetable sea food) and Japanese sea vegetables. Plants grown in iodine rich soils are also good source of iodine.
– Iodized salt is a primary source of iodine.
• Increase consumption of copper, selenium and zinc as these minerals are essential for normal thyroid hormone production and metabolism.
• Foods rich in copper:
– Meat gelatin, eggs, yeast, lamb; pork; pheasant quail; duck; goose; squid; salmon; organ meats.
– Soy and soy products, nuts and seeds, beans, legumes; almonds, broccoli, garlic; bran breads and cereals; sea plants and mushrooms.
– Dried beans - soy beans, lima beans, baked beans, dried peas; lentils; barley.
– Dried fruits including raisins, dates, prunes, avocado, Chocolate.
– Some amount of cooper is obtained from cooking in copper vessels.
• Foods rich in selenium:
– Grains, Brazil nuts, garlic, wheat germ and brewer`s yeast, fish, shellfish, eggs, red meat, chicken and liver.
• Food rich in zinc: Good dietary sources of zinc include seafood (especially oysters), beef, oatmeal, chicken, liver, spinach, nuts and seeds.
– Meat, poultry and milk, shell fish, crab, shrimp and sea plants etc.
– Plant foods are low in zinc, Whole wheat grains provide good amount of zinc.
• Increase consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids, one of the PUFA`s (poly unsaturated fatty acids), as it also contributes to normal thyroid function: Fish and fish oils provide excellent forms of omega-3s as well as vitamin A, which improves thyroid receptor binding and thyroid hormone activity. Flax / linseed oil is the richest source of PUFA`s. Other oils that contain PUFA`s are safflower oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, maize oil, sesame oil, rich bran oil, ground nut oil, mustard oil and olive oil.
• Increase consumption of proteins - tyrosine, an amino acid is a precursor for making thyroid hormone :
– Milk and milk products, eggs (is the richest source), Flesh food: meat, fish, and poultry.
– Nuts and oilseeds, pulses, cereals.
• Mild to moderate exercise is advisable, exercise stimulates thyroid gland function.
• Practise yoga, helps in increasing tissue sensitivity to thyroid hormone.

CONSULT PHYSICIAN:
• If myxoedema presents with complications like cardiac failure or coma consult your physician immediately. Immediate medical attention is necessary.

I am 37 year old. I am diabetic since 2 year and have cholesterol problem also.

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist,
Too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to cardiovascular disease. What you eat has a direct impact on your cholesterol level. In fact, a diet rich in fiber and other cholesterol-lowering foods may help lower cholesterol as much as statin medication for some people. Working with a registered dietitian and doctor is the key to develop and maintain a successful health program to manage it. I will inform you on how to make diet, lifestyle changes, make you understand instructions for taking medication because it won't work if you don't take it as directed. Consult privately for a holistic dietary therapy to solve your problems.

I have diabetes and high blood pressure
I need precautions and food limits to keep it in control
Thank you.
You need to know the low and high glycaemic foods, that is foods that increase /delay the rise in blood sugars. For example white bread has a high gi (glycaemic index) as compared to whole wheat bread. Portion size of your diet will depend on your sugar level, body weight etc. For high bp, you need to cut down all your non veg, processed and bakery products. Certain natural foods are also high in sodium content that needs to be cut down by leeching it.

Actually you are suffering from hypothyroidism. You should be taking thyroid hormone replacement. Your weight seems alright. If your thyroid remains uncontrolled you can have difficulty in conceiving and also higher chances of abortion. Even if you conceive and don't take treatment baby's brain may be affected. So you should be taking medicine regularly.
