About Thyroid gland

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
About Thyroid gland
Low functioning thyroid is a new epidemic of the society affecting more than 3% of people. If thyroid function is low, it causes weight gain, loss of energy, cold intolerance and menstrual irregularities in women.
All people who are aged 50 and above should have their thyroid profile (TSH test) done to look for thyroid deficiency.
In younger people, or in cases of infertility, menstrual irregularity, pregnancy, weight gain, thyroid deficiency should be looked for.
Iodized salt should be used to prevent thyroid deficiency.
Non–iodized salt is only used in two conditions: firstly in patient with thyroid inflammation and secondly, while doing Jalneti in naturopathy, a yoga–related nasal wash technique.
In pregnancy, even mild thyroid deficiency can affect the growth of fetus hence dose requirement of thyroid medicine is much higher in pregnancy than in non–pregnancy.
In the elderly, the dose of thyroid medicine to be started is always low as compared to one in the adults.
If thyroid deficiency is untreated, osteoporosis (thickening of bone) and/or atrial fibrillation (irregular and fast heart rate) may result. Osteoporosis can cause recurrent fractures and atrial fibrillation may cause brain paralysis.
In Allopathic medicine, thyroid deficiency is treated by synthetic T4 hormone replacement.
In Ayurveda, thyroid stimulant drugs are available but they are effective only if some amount of thyroid gland is available.
As per Ayurveda, eating soya and drinking water from copper vessel is good for thyroid.

Hi I am 29 years old, height 5.8 and weight 78 kg. I had increased uric acid level before 1year. I consulted with doctor and he prescribed tablet goutcheck and pan-40 & then I had relief. After 3-4 months I stopped medicines. Now i'm suffering from back pain in morning and some times I get tingling sensation in feets.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Your current symptoms of back pain with off an on tingling sensation in feet region may not be linked to your earlier problem. If you have only localized backache with no other associated symptoms like radiating leg pain, numbness, weakness in legs etc, and no systemic symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, loss of weight etc, my advice to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - to maintain proper posture while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or even tab paracetamol which suits you - intensive physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied 3-4 times in a day - analgesic spray for local application like dynapar qps spray can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc if you do not improve in 2-3 weeks with this conservative management, we will need to evaluate you further in form of dynamic x rays to look for any instability as a cause for pain and some blood investigations to rule out any deficiencies etc. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Doctor has suggested protein diet for my mother but she is sugar patient. Please I need your suggestion.

Doctor has suggested protein diet for my mother but she is sugar patient. Please I need your suggestion.
Studies have shown that eating too much protein, especially animal protein, may actually cause insulin resistance, a key factor in diabetes. A healthy diet includes protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Our bodies need all three to function properly. The key is a balanced diet.

Basic things which are necessary for Diabetes Person. Diabetes is around 350-400, which is not coming down.

Basic things which are necessary for Diabetes Person. Diabetes is around 350-400, which is not coming down.
Mr. Lybrate-user the blood sugar levels mentioned are very high, need to be urgently brought closer to normal with appropriate treatment. It appears present treatment is not at all helping. Leaving sugar levels so high is an invitation to ; ong term complications of diabetes - like retinopathy and blindness, kidney damage, neuropathy, problems with lower limb blood supply and ulceration etc. As regards your question on" basic things necessary for a person with diabetes" it is rather unclear what exactly you are looking for. Still following few things I am giving which one needs to do. 1) take prescribed medications properly without missinga dose. 2) aim at achieving fasting level of 100 mg and pp 150 to 160 mg and hba1c% <7.3) 3) exercise regularly for at least 1 hour a day, to maintain normal weight and spend extra glucose. 4) avoid sweets, sugar and gur, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, sweetened aerated drinks, fructose corn syrup containing products. 5) avoid alcohol and smoking. 6) keep a track of blood sugar and hba1c% regularly. 7) get eyes checked for ruling out retinal involvement. As mentioned above you need to bring sugar levels much lower. May be treatment change is needed.

I am a 23 year old female having hypo thyroidism. I have hair growth problem. Can you suggest me one solution for that.
pl. tell us report of thyroid. you can use hair oil minoxidil for hair growth. You can take Nutrient-rich foods that improve your health may also benefit your thyroid gland, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables more plenty of water: Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and other foods rich in antioxidants can improve overall health and benefit the thyroid gland. Eating foods high in B vitamins, like whole grains, may also help. Selenium: Tiny amounts of selenium are needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly. Eating selenium-rich foods, such as sunflower seeds or Brazil nuts, can be beneficial. Tyrosine: This amino acid is used by the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4. Taking a supplement may help,

Can people type 2 diabetic drink alcohol and smoking cigarettes? What is side effect? Liver function? Heart function? And lung?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

Can people type 2 diabetic drink alcohol and smoking cigarettes? What is side effect? Liver function? Heart function?...
Mr. lybrate-user, A person with diabetes is advised to avoid smoking and alcohol. The reason is smoking tobacco, affects blood vessels, lungs as in any other person. But a person with diabetes has much weaker immune system, is prone to lung infections and cardiac problems. As regards alcohol, it gives empty calories, person fails to recognise hypoglycemic situation. Plus it affects nutrition, affects liver enzymes & can cause severe liver damage. Thanks.

Hi , here are some things you need to ask yourself: 1. How frequently do you eat meals? are there long gaps in between your meals? 2. How often do you exercise? how often does your body get movement? 3. How often do you find yourself feeling stressed out? 4. What is your sleep quality like? 5. Are you eating junk and processed foods? an insight into these would then enable us to understand strategies that ought to be implied for successful, long-term blood sugar control. Hope this helps.
