My baby is 6months old. Between how much gap should I feed other semisolid food. For good health and weight gain.

Hi lybrate-user, 6 months is perfect age to introduce semisolid diet. Usually the gap between 2 meals should be minimum 3hours but still it all depends upon child's demand coz some kids may not even eat for a duration of 4hrs after last meal or some may require feeds every 2hrs. But one thing I will strictly advise never force feed your child. Every meal time should be very relaxed so you can see your child growing happily and confident even.

My baby has gastroenteritis. Doctor has said not to give her fruit juice and milk at all. Are there any other restrictions on food? She loves to eat tomatoes in her curries. Can I use the same? She is 2 years 3 months old.

Definitely she can have tomatoes in curry, give ORS (WHO formula) instead of fruit juice, you can give raw fruits. Raw fruits have fibres which helps to hold water in intestine, so improves the consistency of motions and decrease frequency. She can have all natural foods.

Dont force her for milk. Not essential. Stop all chips chocolates and junk food. Dont run after her for feeding. These three things if followed religiously have a hundred percent result.

Crying before passing urine and stools is normal in small babies. Gas problem can be taken care of by proper burping.

It's normal. Just keep feeding the baby as usual. Do not worry. If there are no other complaints them relax . Just observe things and do the right things as suggested by your doctor.

5 Practical Ways to Prevent Obesity in Children

5 Practical Ways to Prevent Obesity in Children
5 Easy ways to prevent obesity in your child

Research shows that overweight children have a higher chances of developing chronic health problems such as hypertension, asthma, high cholesterol, and even cancer as they grow up. Apart from these health conditions, being obese can cause severe self-esteem problems as well. In short, obesity in children, more specifically childhood obesity, can affect the overall physical, mental and emotional health of your child.

Here are 5 easy ways to prevent your child from falling into the perils of obesity.

1. Develop healthy eating habits in your child
Encouraging your little ones to develop healthy eating habits is vital for maintaining optimum body weight. Instead of high sugar and high fat foods, a child’s diet should consist of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods (such as oats, quinoa and wheat). Proteins such as lean meats, lentils, beans and fish should be included in his/her eating plan as well. Most importantly, serving food in the right portion sizes will ensure your child is getting the right amount of nutrients, while preventing him/her from consuming empty calories. Inculcate these eating habits in them right from the time they are toddlers so that it stays with them as they get older.

2. Make your child avoid calorie-rich foods
Getting your child to avoid fatty, sugary and salty foods can also prevent him from tipping over the weighing scale. Present before your child low sugar and low fat alternatives that he/she would enjoy eating such as apples, bananas, carrots, etc.

3. Encourage your child to pursue physical activity
Try to encourage your child to engage in some form of physical activity for about 60 minutes every day. From brisk walking, swimming, dancing to skipping - your child could opt for any of these physical activities. Having your child lead an active life can see him/her enjoying a number of health benefits like respite from stress, strengthening of his/her bones and muscles and decrease in blood pressure, to name a few.

4. Put a limit on your child’s TV time
When it comes to the time that your child may spend before the TV, computer or other gizmos, it should be not more than 2 hours a day. Instead, devise fun activities wherein your child as well other members of the family can take part in or ones in which your child does not need a company.

5. Ensure your child gets enough sleep
Lastly, a good night’s rest that lasts about 9-12 hours is vital for optimal weight maintenance. Studies reveal that children who slept for fewer hours were more at risk of being obese. This is because less sleep causes fatigue, leading to a decrease in physical activity and therefore, use of energy.

All About Necrotizing Enterocolitis

All About Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Necrotizing enterocolitis is a disease that causes inflammation of the tissues present in the intestines and results in damaged tissues. It initially affects the inner lining which ultimately results in thickening of the intestine. It may also lead to a hole in the abdomen resulting in bacteria entering the intestine, thus resulting in infection.

Symptoms:
The symptoms of Necrotizing enterocolitis are:

  1. You may experience symptoms of bloating in the abdomen
  2. The abdomen may be discolored
  3. You may experience diarrhea and vomiting
  4. You may not feel hungry
  5. There may be presence of blood in your stool
  6. You may have a fever and constantly feel lethargic

Causes: Lack of blood and oxygen in the intestine causes it to become weak and increases the chances of Necrotizing enterocolitis. It may result if oxygen levels drop during a difficult delivery. If the intestines are weak, then they are at a higher risk of getting infected by bacteria. If you have an excessive supply of blood cells in your body or other stomach condition, then it may lead to this disease.

Diagnosis: Usually the doctor conducts a physical exam to detect the symptoms of this disease. If babies are born with this condition, then they may suffer from weak immune system and problems in blood circulation. The doctor may also recommend x-rays to get detailed images of the intestine in order to probe for symptoms of inflammation and damage.

Treatment:
The treatment of the disease depends on few factors such as:

  1. The child's age
  2. How far has the disease progressed?
  3. Health of your child

It is recommended to stop breastfeeding. Feed the baby through intravenous methods. The doctor may also recommend antibiotics and oxygen support if the child has breathing problems. In severe cases, the child may require surgery to treat this disease.

If the treatment occurs early, then the child may recover. However, complications such as a narrow and damaged bowel may persist. This may cause problems in nutrient absorption in the intestine leading to other disorders.

I gave breastfeed to my kid till 2 years but now I stop giving him. From last 3-4 days I felt pain in my left side of breast. I can't lie upside down on my bed while sleeping.

Though you have done the right thing in stopping breast feeding, for how long now, have you stopped it. Milk production subsides gradually, and it may be because of the collection, that they may be full, swollen and hurting. Please be sure there is no redness and you are not running fever. These are signs of a breast abscess. You may get an ultrasound of the breast to be more sure of the problem.

Apart from benefitting the baby, breastfeeding benefits the mother as well. The prolactic hormone is released in the mother's system during the process and she feels a nurturing and peaceful sensation.

Hello, I need to know the fever pattern like how frequent is fever. How is he in interfebrile period, playful with normal appetite or cranky or listless. Fevers lasting 4, 2 weeks or more with no signs of infection on routine lab tests r usually suggestive of systemic. Inflammation.
