Myths About Hair Fall

MD - Dermatology, FMC (Fellow In Med.Cosmetology)

Myths About Hair Fall

1. Pull out a grey and 2 more will grow?
Myth!

A single follicular unit may consist of 1 to 3 hairs or even more. Repeated pulling out of hair from the same follicle will induce trauma to the entire unit damaging and scarring the follicular unit as a whole - losing its ability to produce hair.
However, pulling out a grey in no way has the ability to convert an otherwise normal dark hair into a grey one unless there is involved.

2. Stress cannot induces hair fall?
Myth!

Well if stress burned calories, all of us would be supermodels isn't it?

Stress is blamed for many skin and hair problems and hair loss is generally one of them. But understand that
 - unless you were bedridden from high fever or infections
- you just delivered a baby
- you had a major surgery
It is not considered stress enough to induce hair fall! and there is absolutely nothing to worry as the excessive and sudden hair fall induced by stress called telogen effluvium is reversible- yay! with the right supplements and support therapies off course.

3. All patients need to be tested for hormonal imbalance?
Myth!

Hormone levels are usually tested on suspicion of hyperandrogenism which is seen in approximately 30-40% of female patients with receding hair line or widening of central partition (female pattern hair loss).

Only if you have other symptoms of androgen (testosterone) excess like excess hair growth on face, disturbed menstural cycles, recurring acne and thick hyperpigmented skin on your neck and axilla, hormonal testing is adviced.

Of course there are other hormones like thyroid which when disturbed can also contribute to hair fall or hair thinning.

4. Treat your hair well and hair will not fall?
Myth!

Oil well, massage well, use mild shampoos, go paraben free, deep condition your hair. Wow! imagine doing all of that…so much luxury!

But does that stop your hair fall?
Noooooo, even if you did all those things hair will still fall because hair is constantly in a cycle of growth (anagen), rest (catagen), dormant (telogen) and fall off (exogen).

Facts:
* as much as we love for our hair to be in the anagen phase, it has to fall off for the newer follicle to kick in.
* the telogen phase usually lasts for 4-6 weeks after the growth has begun and at any given time, we find 10% -15% of the hair in our head in this stage.
* there are normally about 100, 000 hair follicles in our scalp going through this cycle replacing all the hair on our scalp every 3-6 years. Yessss!

When there is a disruption to this hair growth cycle in terms of telogen effluvium or damage done due to altered water, pollution, excess sun (uv damage), aggressive combing, vitamin deficiencies, more hair will enter the telogen phase resulting in a greater and significant hair loss (>150 hairs/day).

So what do you do?
Stay calm & treat on

Just invest your time and money in the right and essential products for your hair and do what you do with oiling and massaging etc.

Deficiency of various trace elements, iron, various types of medical illnesses, psychiatric factors, lack of sleep are key factors for canitis (premature greying of hairs) Some of panchkarma therapy like Nasya-karma, shirodhaaraa, Virechan-Karma are the best options for premature greying of hairs. Liposuction - How Can It Help You?

Liposuction - How Can It Help You?

Looking good and feeling good are sometimes one and the same thing which can be achieved with good skin and a fit body. One can turn to many measures to achieve the same, including cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic surgery like liposuction is generally used to remove the excess fat in the body which cannot be treated with normal exercise or diet control measures. This surgery is conducted by a plastic surgeon. Here is everything you need to know about liposuction.

About: Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure. It removes the excess fat present in one’s body with the help of a procedure known as body contouring. This kind of contouring may be carried out in various parts of the body including the calves, knees, buttocks, hips, abdomen, upper arms, breasts and even the neck and chin area. These are the areas that generally end up accumulating excessive fat which does not go away easily. For some people, persistent diet control and exercising may help. But for severe and chronic cases, one will have to make use of measures like liposuction.

Types of Liposuction: Depending on your case as well as the individual system of the patient, one can go in for one of the various types of liposuction. The fluid injection based liposuction is the most popular and common form where a large dose of medicated solution is injected with a local anaesthesia blended into it. This helps in contracting the blood vessels so that the fat can be suctioned out. The next type is the super wet liposuction where the amount of liquid solution injected is the same as the amount of fat that has to be removed. Ultrasound assisted liposuction uses ultrasonic waves in order to transform the fat cells into liquid which can be vacuumed out later. Further, laser assisted liposuction makes use of laser pulses and beams in order to make the fat cells liquid before they are vacuumed out of the system.

The procedure: The plastic surgeon will make use of a special liposuction machine and cannulas or special instruments, so that the surgery may be carried out in a proper manner. Also, depending on the type of procedure you are going in for, you will require local or general anaesthesia. A small incision is made so that the tube may be inserted for the liquefaction process to begin. After this, the fat that has been dislodged will be vacuumed away through the same suction tube. Small drainage tubes will be inserted to remove blood and fluid from the deflated areas and in some rare cases, blood transfusion or fluid replacement may also be required. High blood pressure and cardiovascular cases should not use this option.

Preventing Acne: Skin Care to Help Reduce Breakouts!

MBBS, Md ,Skin And Vd

Preventing Acne: Skin Care to Help Reduce Breakouts!

Acne is a skin condition that leads to breakouts like pimples and other eruptions on the skin, including white heads and black heads. In very severe conditions, an acne breakout may come with pus filled boils too. An acne breakout happens due to various reasons. Inflammation of an infected sebaceous gland leads to this breakout. This infection and consequent inflammation can take place due to hormonal changes, poor diet, as well as high testosterone levels and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Dirt and grime that clog the pores and dead cells that have not been washed off properly can also cause these breakouts. So what kind of skin care regimen can you have in order to prevent acne? Read on to know more.

  1. Cleaning Acne Prone Areas: You must wash the acne prone areas with soap and warm water at least twice a day. If your case has been very severe in the past, you can even use a medicated soap to wash the neck, shoulders and back as sometimes, acne spreads to these areas as well. Concentrate on the face and remember to clean it to remove dust, grime and other irritants that come from pollution. If this is not done on a regular basis, the particles can block the pores and lead to infection where the dead skin cells play a major role.
  2. Make Up: If your skin is acne prone, you can use non oily make up or avoid it on a daily basis, if you can. Non oily make up does not irritate the sebaceous glands, which can end up secreting excessive oil leading to acne breakouts. Non oily make up and skin care products are known as non comedogenics which do not clog the pores. Also, you must remember to remove your applied make up carefully before you go to bed so that the pores are clean and get a chance to breathe rather than getting infected. Further, your old make up needs to be thrown out regularly even if the products do not come with an expiry date. Invest in new make up every few months and clean your brushes regularly too.
  3. Sweat: After a particularly intense work out session or after a run, you must remember to wash you face and take a shower so that the sweat and oil is can be removed, as these lead to breakouts if they are allowed to gather on the skin's surface and enter the pores.

Taking care of your skin with a proper cleaning and hydrating routine is as important is getting the right nutrition as well.

May be red or black in colour. Treatment depending on the type and severity. Avoid sharing clothes, towels and soap; sweating also increases it. Acne can be a painful and embarrassing skin condition, and the scars it leaves behind are an unwelcome reminder of that. A dermatologist can help remove raised or pitted scars. While hyper-pigmented blemishes may fade after several months, you can help speed up the process. Realistically, you will not be able to make acne scars disappear in a single night, but the remedies, products, treatments, and skincare tips will certainly produce a noticeable difference over time. Apply fresh lemon juice. Lemon juice has natural skin bleaching properties, and can help to effectively lighten your acne scars. Simply combine equal parts lemon juice and water and apply this liquid directly onto your scars, avoiding the surrounding skin. Wash off the lemon juice after 15 to 25 minutes or you could put the lemon juice on overnight as a mask. Use honey. Honey is a great natural solution for clearing up pimples and reducing the red marks they leave behind. This is because honey contains antibacterial properties and helps to soothe the skin and reduce inflammation. Raw or manuka honey is the most effective. It can be dabbed directly onto the scarred area, using a q-tip. Experiment with aloe vera. The sap of the aloe vera plant is a soothing natural substance which can be used to relieve many ailments, from burns to wounds to acne scars. Aloe vera helps to rejuvenate and moisturize the skin, encouraging acne scars to fade. It is possible to buy aloe vera products in the drugstore, but the best thing to do is buy an aloe vera plant and use the sap from a broken leaf. This gel-like sap can be applied directly on the scarring, and there is no need to wash off. Use an ice cube. Ice is an extremely simple home remedy which can help to fade acne scars by soothing the inflamed skin and reducing redness. To use, just wrap an ice cube in a clean cloth or piece of paper towel and hold it against the scarred skin for a minute or two, til the area starts to feel numb. Sometimes it can burn. For medication consult online in private.
