Is the diabetic vaccine true? Can my mother who is 70 year use the diabetic vaccine and benefit from it?
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. There are some studies going on since many years for developing a vaccine for T1 diabetes, however, still there no success. Now the expectation is by 2018 there may be a possibility of introduction of such a vaccine. For T1 DM but at present there is no vaccine. Plus for T2 diabetes there is possibility of that at all. Thanks.

Hello, Thanks for the query. The glucose levels mentioned are fairly good. Ideally fasting should be < 100 mg & PP 150 to 160 mg. These levels can be achieved by altering your diet and increasing the amount of daily exercise that you are doing. There is no need to change the medication. Thanks.

Hi I took a Thyroid test yesterday and the results were as below T3 came out to be 1.24, T4 1.87 and TSH 1.47. T3 and TSH is within the safe limits but TSH is too low. What could be the reason? Is it something to worry about? Please help.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Your thyroid test results are absolutely normal. TSH range is 0.3 to 5.5 mU/L. In some labs it is shown as 0.4 to 4.5 mu/L. Therefore 1.47 mU/L is within the normal range. There is no reason to worry. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The blood glucose levels (fasting 199 mg & PP 144 mg) are quite good. The other levels mentioned (fasting 154 mg) is high but PP 165 mg is good. The blood glucose levels from venous blood are about 11% lower than those from capillary blood (glucometer). Please check the HbA1c%, it should be <7 % or so. Which means her diabetes is under good control. There is no need to change any medication. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Since you are on treatment for hypothyroidism, it is essential to maintain TSH level around 3 to 4 mU/L to be free from all the symptoms. Hence, it is clear that present dosage of thyroxine (75 mcg) is not adequate. Please increase it by 12.5 mcg and then check TSH after 6 to 8 weeks, to see if the desired level is reached. At that level all the symptoms will disappear. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query' When on treatment for hypothyroidism, it si necessary to maintain TSH around 3 to 4 mU/L, then only all the symptoms are in check. Since there is no mention of the TSH level, it is difficult to comment. As regards the elevated levels of liver enzymes it may be due to fatty liver. So please let me know your lipid profile, thyroid hormone levels, and whether you exercise daily as well as your dietary pattern. Thanks.

My husband's age is 39 he has thyroid his tsh value is 10, is his thyroid is very high if so what should you suggest for him and he is afraid to eat any thing.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, Thanks for the query. TSH 10 mU/L, is showing he has hypothyroidism which needs to be treated with adequate dose of levothyroxine. It is necessary to maintain TSH around 3 to 4 mU/L, to be free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. He should avoid soy beans, soy containing products and should consume a good deal of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Avoid bakery items and foods made of maida. Plus exercise daily for 1 hour. Thanks.

Is thyroid a curable disease? Give a diet plan on what to eat and what should not eat for a thyroid patient.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Please explain what particular condition are you referring by saying "thyroid disease" Because there are two major conditions: hypothyroidism and hyperthyrpoidism. There is no specific diet for thyroid disease. Only if someone has hypothyroidism then soy beans and soy containing products should be avoided. Plus one should consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Always use whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Should avoid maida and products made from it. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. First and foremost it is necessary to conrol blood glucose very strictly, with fasting < 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8. The second point, it looks like fungal infection of the glance or prepuce. It needs to be treated with antifungal drugs. Thanks.

lybrate-userji, Thanks for the query. Weight loss in a diabetes patient occurs when blood glucose is uncontrolled and there is excess glucose lost through urine. Hence, primary need is to achieve a strict blood glucose control with fasting < 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8. Once having achieved this then the efforts to add some weight can be successful. Since there are no details given like weight, height, fasting, PP glucose levels, dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise and drugs with dosage, no specific suggestions can be made. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Madam for treating hypothyroidism the only treatment is to supplement the deficient hormone thyroxine in adequate quantity every day. This treatment has to be taken for lifetime. There is no short cut. Amla has no role to play in controlling thyroid related issues. You may still use it along with honey and lemon (amla & lemon both give Vitamin C). But there is no role in relation to hypothyroidism. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user Thanks for the query. Fasting glucose seems to be higher than normal (70 to 100 mg/100 ml), where as PP is quite less. So there is no diabetes. However, please check the blood glucose periodically. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Aap ka ilaj karane ke liye ya koi dava batane ke liye, bahut sari cheejon ki jankari milani chahiye jaise: Fasting & after food glucose level, HbA1c%, BP reading, agar aap koi dava lete ho to usaka detail, aap ka lipid profile, liver function test details. Isake saath aap ka present diet pattern, extent of daily exercise isaka bhi detail chahiye. It is better if you come in a private conversation (paid consultation) with all those details, then only I can give specific guidelines as well as prescriptions.

Hello, Thanks for the query. In case of confirmed hypothyroidism (ith TSH > 10 mU/L), treatment with Levothyroxine has to be started. Since there is no mention of any values it is difficult to give any specific suggestion. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Swelling of legs can occur due to many reasons including problems with heart, kidney, liver or thyroid. Another important aspect is looking at your weight and height with a BMI of 35.77 kgs/M2, you are having grade 2 obesity, which also can lead to swelling of legs. My suggestion is please get your thyroid hormones tested and see if TSH is abnormal. Plus if you make specific attempt to reduce weight, that will help in taking care of this problem. Your ideal weight should be about 53 kgs, where as you are 30 kgs extra. This itself can be a major problem. Thanks.

Hello, thanks for the query. For treating hypothyroidism Levothyroxine in adequate dose has to be taken, early morning on empty stomach and nothing should be taken for next 1 to 1 & half hour. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query, For patients with hypothyroidism only soy beans and soy containing products are to be avoided. All other foods, fruits and seeds are fine. You can definitely take all those things mentioned. Most important is your TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L to be free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Hempglobin 9.9 g / 100 ml is on the lower side, suggesting you have anemia (mostly iron deficiency). ESR 43 mm is suggestive of some pathological process is on. It does not show any specific disease. As regards TSH being 9 mU/L and taking treatment for only 1.5 years, then stopping it after TSH was normal, is not at all advisable. Once treatment is stopped, TSH is bound to go up. If you are thinking of having a baby, then it is essential to bring TSH <2 mU/L before conception and during the pregnancy it must be maintained around 2 mU/L, for proper fetal development and desired outcome of pregnancy. Please also get your Anti TPO antibodies checked. Because presence of any autoimmune process in the system may also lead to increase in ESR. Thanks.
