I have chest pain and cough over 5 years is there any solution for this. I smoke ciggarates.

I have chest pain and cough over 5 years is there any solution for this. I smoke ciggarates.
I hope it is a regular chest pain and cough. But you never know with you smoking and all. You msut visit a doctor and examine teh chest pain to see that you are not developing some cardiac problem. Whatever happens the smoking must stop. It is very bad habit and if these symptoms are connected to the habit, this may hopefully be the last of your smoking. Please do some of the following as you condition improves:Tobacco consumption, either through smoke or other edible forms, is always harmful. The desire to quit is a good starting point. The best way to quit is to know more about the ill-effects of tobacco. The knowledge is astounding and scary. That information itself should help you to want to quit. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. There are more than 4000 harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke!!! You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. Then you need to identify why you smoke: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. You may discover that the reasons may be unimportant at this stage because you have become too addicted and the habit has become compulsive. You should start exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. Don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. As Mark Twain once jocularly said, “giving up smoking is easy; I have done it many times”. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

Dear lybtateuser, - There is a ECG change which the report mentions as an early change, it may not be very significant unless you have signs & symptoms of any heart problem - you have to reduce your weight by dieting & regular exercise - have more of fruits & vegetables that is more of fibre containing foods, spinach, beans, legumes, nuts - avoid fried, processed, sugary, salty foods - do aerobic exercise like brisk walking, jogging, swimming for 30-40 min, do moderate weight lifting to boost your metabolism, try to include yoga, meditation & deep breathing for 10-15 min daily in the morning - monitor your BP, blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid hormone level & weight regularly destress yourself by proper sleep for 7-8 hrs at night, reading, listening to music, follow a hobby.

Dear sir, my age is 42 years. My normal heart beat is about 100 to 110 and during walking or some normal work it exceeds up-to 130. Is it normal or do I have any problem. I dont have any chest pain or any other problem. Please suggest. Note- I am diabetic.

DM Cardiology

Dear, the normal range of heart rate in an adult is from 60 - 100 beats per minute. Since your heart rate is above this, it needs to be investigated. You should get your thyroid function, echo and hb tests done.

Hello dear High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. Garlic,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines .

You are 22 and living in nainital, it will be worth getting cardiac check up done for sugar and lipids and ecg and halter tests plus blood pressure and get back here with reports. You will get more guidance from any of us here on the forum. Regarding hospital I am a delhi based doctor and can recommend nhi at eok for routine check up. Just for information for everyone reading this these people have bpl category beds too and a subsidised treatment is offered provided the person carries a genuine bpl card but after getting booked for treatment, there's no discrimination between classes of people in icu.

Alternative Therapies Lower BP
A group of experts has reviewed all the existing studies and concluded that indeed there are alternative treatments for lowering blood pressure, with aerobic exercise leading the pack as far as strong evidence goes.
Other alternative treatments ? namely isometric handgrip and dynamic resistance exercises and guided breathing ?? also got high grades when it came to reducing high blood pressure in some patients, according to a scientific statement from the American Heart Association published online in the journal Hypertension.
"The evidence is not as strong for transcendental meditation and acupuncture, but they may help as well," said co?senior author Sanjay Rajagopalan, MD, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Ohio State University School of Medicine in Columbus.
For the report, an expert panel headed by the University of Michigan?s Robert D. Brook, MD, reviewed 1,000 studies published from 2006 to 2011. They divided the studies into three major classes of alternative treatments: behavioral therapies, noninvasive procedures and devices, and exercise. The panel did not review dietary and herbal treatments. Based on the level of evidence, they gave each an "A," "B," or "C" recommendation ?? with "A" being the highest ?? for implementation into clinical practice.
The panel found:
Exercise?based regimens did the best overall, with dynamic aerobic exercises getting an "A" class of recommendation, with a level of evidence of I, the highest possible.
Dynamic resistance exercises got a "B" and isometric handgrip exercises got a "C" grade, with levels of evidence of IIA and IIB, respectively.
Still, 4 weeks of isometric hand grip exercises resulted in some of the most impressive improvements in several studies ?? a 10% drop in systolic and diastolic BP. However, isometric exercise should be avoided among people with severely uncontrolled hypertension (180/110 mm Hg or higher).
In Noninvasive procedures or devices, device?guided breathing got a "B" with a level of evidence of II. Device?guided slow breathing proved most effective in lowering blood pressure when performed for 15?minute sessions three to four times a week.
Acupuncture also got a "B," but its level of evidence was III, meaning no benefit.
Among behavioral techniques, transcendental meditation and biofeedback both received "B" grades, with IIBs for levels of evidence. Yoga got a C, with level of evidence of III, or no benefit, as did other meditation techniques.
The alternative approaches that work reduce systolic blood pressure by only 2 to 10 mm Hg; whereas standard doses of a blood pressure?lowering drug reduce systolic blood pressure by about 10 to 15 mm Hg.
Alternative approaches are best for patients with blood pressure levels over 120/80 mm Hg who can?t tolerate or don?t respond well to standard medications.
