Sudhaji, If you have hypothyroidism, where there is thyroxine deficiency then the treatment has to go on for life time. There is no other option. You are only 24 years, pretty young, so the treatment has to be followed meticulously, because low TSH levels are a must for getting pregnant. That is only possible by taking regular treatment. In addition you should avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, peanuts and coffee. Consume more of green leafy vegetables and salads, fruits. Use whole grain flour for chapati and roti, no maida. Avoid aerated sweetened drinks and fructose cornsyrup containing products. Exercise daily to maintain normal weight.

If you have hypothyroidism then only option is to take thyroxine tablets regularly for whole life. This is essential because it is a deficiency disorder, where our thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroxine. This hormone is needed for day to day functioning of brain, involved in every single metabolic reaction in the body. If not well treated it can lead to very serious consequences. Please understand this condition can only be treated by thyroxine replacement. Other practices of medicine do not have any medication for this. Plus you will have to observe dietary restrictions and do regular exercise to avoid weight gain. Treatment is for lifetime. Thanks.

Hi lybrate-user eat fresh vegetables daily. Avoid having sugar completely. Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread; avoid everything made from white flour and make whole wheat bread, chapattis and brown rice a way of life. Do not skip a meal and eat three meals a day. Drink plenty of water to eliminate the toxins from the system. Limit your fat intake to 2-3 teaspoons a day. Increase the fiber intake as it provides a sense of fullness and also prevents hunger pangs. Take antioxidants for protecting the body against the toxins released during weight loss. Exercise catalyzes your efforts to lose weight and even regular walking for thirty minutes can give you the benefits of an aerobics exercise. To improve the metabolism, try increasing the duration, frequency, intensity of your daily workout. Remember that maintaining the ideal weight is a lifetime commitment and not a short-term affair. Firmly believe that the pleasure of being trim and healthy is far better than the pleasure of eating unwisely.

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology, MBBS

Ask Free Question
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (ht), is an autoimmune disease, causing lymphocytic infiltration of thyroid gland plus there are anti bodies produced by our own immune cells against thyroid peroxidase (anti tpo abs). These antibodies destroy thyroxine secreting cells in the gland, leading to hypothyroidism. The causes are not clear, genetic predisposition, viral infections and even taking excess iodinated salt have been thought to be the reasons. In usa this is the main cause of hypothyroidism, more common in women, the patient with ht usually have other members of the family having some or the other autoimmune disease or himself or herself may have another autoimmune disorder like rheumatoid arthritis or t1 diabetes. Treatment is to give thyroxine replacement for life time. Iodine has no role in the treatment.

Thyroid disorder and weight loss

Most of the time, underlying the thyroid disorder is years of abuse of our body.
When you don't take proper care of your own nutrition, sleep and invest time for proper exercise, at some point various hormonal systems of the body go out of sync.

It is very important to have your thyroid hormones as tablets as per your doctor's prescription and adjust the dose with a periodic check up. And just doing it may reduce your weight little bit. But it will not be enough. You need to work on the root cause of this issue.

Avoid all junk food and all sweet food. Low fat - low calorie diets does not work for the majority of people. Eat wholesome nutritious food full of fibers, good quality fat like ghee and coconut etc. Don't focus on calories but on nutritional density and diversity.

Simultaneously working on exercise and diet will surely help. You do not have to do rigorous exercise to lose weight but start with something small. Let us say 8-minute workout.

Best rate to lose weight is 1/2 kg per week. If that happens, it is least likely to go high again in future.

Trying to lose weight in very short time will need some form of crash diet. Even if you lose weight doing this kind of crash diet, you will get it all back in no time and all the gain will be mainly fat. Not good for your health.

Be gentle and patient with yourself. Demonstrate commitment to your persistent efforts. Make a comprehensive change in diet, exercise, sleep and stress in your routine. This is called lifestyle medicine. If you can not do it on your own, find some expert who can help you in this over an extended period of time.

Mr. Lybrate-user, as you have mentioned that you are having diabetes (t1 or t2 not mentioned) & thyroid (hypothyroid I think), if that is the case then treating these conditions and bringing those in control is the primary need. Once that happens your health will improve and even stress and depression will ease. So first is to get appropriate treatment for both these conditions. There is no mention about levels of blood glucose, hba1c% denoting severity of diabetes and tsh & t4 levels denoting hypothyroidism severity. Plus about treatment if any and dosage. If you want any specific help regarding those two conditions and treatment then please come in a private conversation with all the details mentioned, then I will be able to guide specifically. Proper control these conditions will be very useful to reduce stress. Thanks.

I have thyroid problem, get tired easily, get irritated easily, I have put on lots of weight. How to control my weight?

Relationship between thyroid and weight It has been appreciated for a very long time that there is a complex relationship between thyroid disease, body weight and metabolism. Thyroid hormone regulates metabolism in both animals and humans. Metabolism is determined by measuring the amount of oxygen used by the body over a specific amount of time. If the measurement is made at rest, it is known as the basal metabolic rate (BMR). Indeed, measurement of the BMR was one of the earliest tests used to assess a patient’s thyroid status. Patients whose thyroid glands were not working were found to have low BMRs, and those with overactive thyroid glands had high BMRs. Later studies linked these observations with measurements of thyroid hormone levels and showed that low thyroid hormone levels were associated with low BMRs and high thyroid hormone levels were associated with BMRs. Most physicians no longer use BMR due to the complexity in doing the test and because the BMR is subject to many other influences other than the thyroid state. Relationship between bmr and weight Differences in BMRs are associated with changes in energy balance. Energy balance reflects the difference between the amount of calories one eats and the amount of calories the body uses. If a high BMR is induced by the administration of drugs, such as amphetamines, animals often have a negative energy balance which leads to weight loss. Based on such studies many people have concluded that changes in thyroid hormone levels, which lead to changes in BMR, should also cause changes in energy balance and similar changes in body weight. However, BMRs are not the whole story relating weight and thyroid. For example, when metabolic rates are reduced in animals by various means (for example by decreasing the body temperature), these animals often do not show the expected excess weight gain. Thus, the relationship between metabolic rates, energy balance, and weight changes is very complex. There are many other hormones (besides thyroid hormone), proteins, and other chemicals that are very important for controlling energy expenditure, food intake, and body weight. Because all these substances interact on both the brain centers that regulate energy expenditure and tissues throughout the body that control energy expenditure and energy intake, we cannot predict the effect of altering only one of these factors (such as thyroid hormone) on body weight as a whole. As a consequence, at this time, we are unable to predict the effect of changing thyroid state on any individual’s body weight.

control hypothyroidism I am sure you are thyroxine tablets in a prescribed dosage, as that is the only treatment. Once your thyroxine dosage is stabilised and tsh levels have returned to normal limits, most of the symptoms of hypothyroidism are in check. As you are aware treatment is for life time. Usually hypothyroidism tends to increase body weight, to reduce weight apart from taking regular treatment you also have to exercise for at least 1 h a day. Also restrict the diet, avoiding enriched fatty foods, deep fried stuffs, junk food and increase intake of green vegetables (except cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard and coffee. Consume good deal of green salads, veges and fruits.

Swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that cause discomfort and bleeding. Other factors that increase the risk for getting hemorrhoids include constipation, diarrhea, lifting heavy objects, poor posture, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, eating a diet low in fibre, anal intercourse, and being overweight. Liver damage and some food allergies can also add stress to the rectal veins. People who consistently eat a high-fiber diet are less likely to get hemorrhoids, while those people who prefer a diet high in processed foods are at higher risk. A low-fiber diet or inadequate fluid intake can cause constipation, which can contribute to hemorrhoids in two ways: it promotes straining on the toilet People do not consider homeopathy medicine for piles at its early stages and this is one of the reason why they end up under a surgeon's knife.
