Common Health Tips We All Must Adhere To!

'Eat healthy food items like fruits, green leafy vegetables, salad etc...' - We have always been hearing this from our elders about how a healthy body is the key to a healthy mind. Trying to define health in a sentence is possible, but not justifiable because it is an umbrella term for a lot of aspects of our life. Being healthy is that state of our existence where we are happy and contented and are at the epitome of our fitness.

Life is too short to fret over things that make us unhappy, so taking decisions that would make us contented mentally and physically is the first step to attaining a healthy lifestyle. Now, one could easily start a debate here stating how eating unhealthy food or indulging in unhealthy habits also make people happy. Yes, they do, but that is a momentary gratification and with one single life, it is essential to think long-term.

Let's review some tips that could help an individual fall right on track if he/she wants to jumpstart their healthy lifestyle:

  1. Eating healthy food items should not feel or look like restriction. It should be a mentality, a lifestyle rather than being a meaningless difficult regimen.
  2. In order to avoid unhealthy snacking, it would be a good idea to keep those kind of foods away from the visual arena.
  3. It is not necessary to entirely cut off the love for sweets. It would be great to eat strategic sweets like dark chocolates to fulfil the cravings and not feel guilty about it.
  4. Carrying homemade lunch is a very good idea to keep oneself away from unhealthy restaurant food. The best part about this is that a lot of money is saved.
  5. Proper strategies can definitely get us going. For example, the veggies we eat do not necessarily need to be tasteless. In fact, adding some spices or sauces (made from vinaigrette and different seasonings) can not only make the food taste great but also help bring out the innovations inside us.
  6. One great way we can keep ourselves motivated is by talking about the dietary plans and goals with a friend and discussing the major healthy lifestyle changes that have already been taken care of.
  7. Keeping a journal about the progress and also rewarding oneself on reaching small goals are amazing ways to keep going.

There are numerous tips for a healthy lifestyle, but one important advice is to avoid alcohol and also other addictive substances like nicotine (which means smoking cigarettes).

Olive Oil - Know Its Different Types!

Today, olive oil is known as one of the healthiest oils for cooking food because of its low level of saturated fats. Olive oil is also said to be able to aid in weight loss, reduce cholesterol, lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, slow down the ageing process and protect against certain types of cancer. However, not all types of olive oil are the same. Olive oil is extracted by crushing olives and is categorised on the basis of the type of pressing, acidity levels and extent of processing undergone.

Some of the common types of olive oil available are:

  1. Extra virgin olive oil: This refers to oil produced by the first ‘pressing’ of olives. This oil is extracted using only mechanical or other physical means and does not involve the use of heat or chemicals. The only processing is subjected to is washing, decanting, centrifuging and filtering. The maximum acidity level of this oil is 0.8%. Extra virgin olive oil has no added flavours or aroma and is said to have a superior taste.
  2. Virgin olive oil: This is the second grade of olive oil. It has slightly higher level of acidity than extra virgin olive oil. It may seem to have a slight flavour imperfection as compared to the earlier oil. This is most commonly used type of olive oil.
  3. Refined olive oil: Oil that is produced by subsequent pressings of the remaining olive flesh is known as refined olive oil. It has a lighter colour and is less viscous as compared to virgin olive oil. Unlike virgin olive oil, refined olive oil is bleached and deodorised. It may also be mixed with a little virgin olive oil. This type of oil has the same levels of monosaturated fat, but has very little antioxidants. It can be used for most of the preparation methods like stir fry, saute, light cooking, etc.
  4. Olive pomace oil: The crushed flesh and pits left over from the extraction of olive oil is known as pomace. This may further be used to extract oil known as pomace oil. Pomace oil is an inferior oil that may be mixed with olive oil to improve its taste and texture. It can be used for deep frying
  5. Unfiltered olive oil: As the name suggests, the unfiltered olive oil contains bits of olive flesh. While this may enhance the flavour of the oil, it also causes a sediment to be formed at the bottom of the bottle. This sediment may become rancid over time and lower the shelf life of the oil. Unfiltered olive oil should ideally be used within 6 months of being bottled.

Apart from the above, there are a number of other types of olive oil such as early or late harvest olive oil, hand picked olive oil, single estate olive oil and flavoured oil. Olive pomace oil, however, is considered best for Indian style of cooking as it has high smoking point.

Hello, for increasing metabolism you should do exercise atleast 30 min in a day. Avoid carbohydrates in your diet specially in your dinner like rice, potato, sweet potato, fried foods and take high fiber diet like oats, wheatflakes, fruits and vegetables, pulses etc.

I use to eat 25 - 30 gm. Boiled soya chunks daily for protein. Is it okay? Can I drink that water too in which these chunks are boiled? I hope this will help in building muscles and will not have any serious side effect.

Hello, there is no side effect from soya chunks, this is very good and rich in protein, but for more protein you can have paneer, eggs, tofu, milk and milk products, chicken and fish.

Hello, for loosing weight, Have small and frequent meals instead of 3 main meals in a day. Avoid sweets and sugar based foods, fried foods and heavy dinners. Include 2 - 3 servings of fruits and vegetables. Go for atleast 30 - 40 min of brisk walks / jogging every day. Have a light and early diner (by 8 Pm) and no salt intake after 8-8: 30 pm. Have a diet rich in protein and fiber.

Hello , green tea diet is full of health benefits. Green tea can boost your metabolism and improve your body’s efficiency for burning energy.. Drinking between 2 and 3 cups of hot green tea throughout the day should be sufficient for supplementing weight loss. Lemon helps to remove toxins from the body and also enhances the taste of green tea.
